Question on Engagement Ring Width

Hi All,

I am in the process of designing an engagement ring with Steven Kirsch for my girlfriend. The center stone is a round 2 carat diamond with a solitaire style / pave on ring. My question focuses on the width of the ring. I was thinking ~2.2mm vs. a smaller 1.9mm band. Any thoughts on ring width would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Chris

Do you know what size ring finger she is?

Either way, I’d personally want the thinner band, as it’ll also make the diamond appear larger :).

You do not want the band too thin, especially if you are having mele diamonds set into it. You can search and there are numerous topics about this very subject. Short answer: a band less than 2 mm with mele/pave is asking for trouble.

I may be a bit of an odd duck here, because I favor substantial settings. For an engagement ring you are ideally wearing it for the rest of your life; you want enough metal to handle years of wear. Since there are many inspirational pics of rings with extremely thin bands I hope you can find a balance between daintyness/thinness and durability. But yes I would not go under 2 mm. Ring designers, setters can comment more.

My engagement ring is slightly over 2mm and I find it too thick and am always wishing it were narrower. Especially after you add a band which will probably be a similar width it adds up. So I vote thinner but I don’t have any experience with pave either.

Congradulations on your engagment

Fashions come and go, hopefully love lasts for ever
do you think your future wife will upgrade her ring in the future ?

Will a thin band last out 50 plus years of marriage ?

I think you’re on the right track going 2.2mm vs something thinner. It will still give a very feminine and delicate appearance while having enough structure to hold the pave and support a 2ct stone.

I personally prefer a thinner band. I think the proportions will look nice with 1.9 width on a 2 ct!

The 2.2 is fine, I wouldn't go for the thinner band. As previous posters said, the structural integrity of the ring could be compromised if the band is too thin. Warping and breaking are possibilities. A thinner band makes a diamond look larger, but a 2.2mm is still pretty thin.

Just my $.02

i personally like thinner band. i am having my halo ring width set at 1.8mm. cant wait to see it!

I like a 2mm for an e-ring because while it's slender on it's own, once you add the wedding band, the width doubles. The set won't look so thin. 2mm is a good size for a solid shank. Now, if you want to add some pave to the ring, I'd go up to 2.2mm but I wouldn't go much wider. You want the 2ct stone to look as large as it can be. :))

I feel like these threads are a pretty good gauge. It seems to be 1.8mm vs 2.1mm from what the threads say, but there is some tapering.

OMG that tennis bracelet with yellow diamonds is stunning! :kiss2:

I’d go with 1.8-2.0mm, if the band were going to be solid.
If you are adding pave, I wouldn’t go under 2.0mm.
