I get a "vibe" that you would really like the diamonds - although not channel set. If so - you should go for it!!

What about gypsy set in a slightly scattered fashion?

I am not sure what I like anymore. Each picture looks different -- even on the fingers bc of the angle.

I thought I prefered no diamonds (from the start) but is it missing something? Very plain with out. In two tone plain is nice--but thinking all white may be too plain?? (I would want all white for sure). -maybe too much metal? (dont quote me on that! LOL)

I will have to google "GYPSY in a scattered fashion". Not sure what that is.

I think it does look a bit old fashioned with the diamonds...pave may bring it up to times. BUT....maybe not....no pic with pave. That would be "custom" .

GYPSY in a scattered fashion

GREAT IDEA!!!

NEAT look-- like it---but may just stick to diamnods (pave large) or no diamonds

NICE IDEA though! Appreciate you suggesting

THANK YOU!!!

Going with NO diamonds---in all white gold. Figured looks modern/sleek. Will be quite a change for me from my old setting with all the diamonds in the band. If I HATE it--I will set a pink or blue gem in it--if I get borrreeed with it after a bit--I will brush or pound the swirl.

WISH ME LUCK! Ordering!!!!

Will update with a pic!! THANK YOU ALL FOR ENTERTAINING ME!!!!!

**UPDATED* QUICK HELP!!! Diamonds in setting or NO diamonds?

Hello,

Thank you all for your votes and thoughts! Your input helped me with my final choice!

I literally just received my ring in the mail and had my diamond set today. I asked my jeweler to set the diamond as low as possible in the head it came with. Left handed (bump a lot) and I wanted to fill as much "empty space" around the diamond as possible. To set lower, I would need a new head, technically called a "basket" I think, and I did not want to get in to that at this time. I didn't even ask to be honest. Just know it was set as low as possible. Only cost $50 to set the diamond so I can sit on the idea of a custom basket/head for awhile. Not a big loss $.

I LOVE the ring overall! One side view I don't like so much where you can see a lot of "space". Very glad I did not get the channel set diamonds in the swirl. Good choice for me.....I am attracted to the clean lines and super reflective, high polished look of the white gold. I hope it stays this way (read high polishes show ever scratch)!!

I do miss all the side diamonds in my old setting but what I WON'T miss is the excessive problems and worrying about loose side stones!! One thing I don't like is a tad of space that can be seen at certain angles around the diamond. A two ct would look great in this setting!! Fill up the center nice! I am thinking if the diamond is lower set it may "fill the space" better.

When I showed my husband the ring, he said "the setting does not make my diamond look as large as the old setting did" (wrong thing to say...). Ugggh....that bothered me a lot..... :( Popped my balloon a bit.....

I am enjoying the modern/sleek look. I just HOPE the high shine stays (on the top at least- I can see my face in it!!). NO REGRETS.

In some pics, it looks like my diamond is larger than it looks in person for some reason???? It is a 1.1 with a tad of a spread (looks 1.2)

More pics--will try to zoom in a bit

Still trying to get a closer shot---didn't know the pics would be so small posted here (on hand)
SORRY!!

SORRY it too so many tries. First sets were "useless" too far away....
First pic shows that "space" I don't like...only can see from the one angle (one side view). Other side does not show it.
Second pic LOVE the top down look. Diamond "fills area". This is why I wonder of a lower set diamond would fill the space up (seems it may when I look)...

middle pic is empty old setting and new....side by side

GOSH!!! How did that last picture get so big????? LOL...oh well. SORRY again for all the pics. My intentions are to post pics for anyone who wants this sort of "look" for a setting. To help with any decision making!

THANK YOU! Ciao

Wow, I really like how it looks on your hand! Very striking and unique! And you're right, your diamond looks large in the setting! Glad you are happy with it and thanks for coming back with an update - enjoy it! :appl:

OH HELLO. Junebug! Kind! Means a lot you like it! Worried looked smaller
(not larger). I was hoping for a bit if positive reinforcement! Thanks!
Definately like....just soooooo different than old setting.

Thank you! Appreciate your nice words!

I definitely get the retro vibe, but that's because I turned 42 this year. :) Looks great, bold and makes a statement. You can definitely rock it. Own it. Work it... (What famous 80s movie??) :appl: :appl:

How unique. I'm glad you went sans diamonds as it has a very graphic feel this way. Almost like a sculpture. Its beautiful.

Pardon my stupid question - what is an invisible setting?

I love it! It looks very artistic and modern. I love the clean lines!!!
You diamond looks huge on your small fingers. Congrats!

Good morning---- 41 1/2 year old here...July baby.....1972!!! LOL!! I TOTALLY agree with the 80's thing which is why I was a bit worried. A few comments (and personal friends) thought the diamonds in the swish made it look 80's, which is part of the reason I chose the ring with out them. More modern look hopefully. Either way--I do like it! I do enjoy "unusual" and "interesting" ... I am going to rock it hard!!!

Oh yes........the 80's......soon, people will be too young to remember the 80's!! Nobody will know if the ring looks old fashioned! LOL! I asked a coworker her thoughts on diamonds vs none (VERY stylish, high end /trend, in hey mid 20's). She said the diamonds in the swish. I said " do you think it look's 80's?".....she replied "how would I know? I was not born then...." (or something like that). LOL. Way to make me feel old....

Oh Niel!! Thank you--LOVE how you described the setting! :twirl: I am admiring the ring posted with your ID. VERY NICE!! That was the other look I was considering when shopping for a remount. Graduating round diamonds down the sides! PRETTY! VERY elegant and I bet it has a lot of sparkle! I was "back and forth" on what to do. I am saving for a 2ct (if that ever happens) and decided IF I do ever get a 2ct., I would bling out the setting with side diamonds and wear it as my main wedding ring. Keep my current setting for my right hand (less wedding looking). See the master plan???! LOL. Just need to rob a bank!!! Or teacher a few more summer school sessions (I would not do well in jail to be honest). I don't think they let you wear jewelry!!

Acinom WOW!!! Skinny fingers!!! Love you! Yah, my fingers are still pretty thin (5 on ring finger). 5'4. 20-25 lbs over weight for height. IE: When I took my ring in to have the diamond set this week, the jeweler asked if the ring fit my finger??? He said "this fits you?". I simply replied, "Yes, I have thin fingers and wrists. I am suppose to be skinner than I am" (with a laugh). Thank you for the compliment!! LOL

Charmypoo
---"invisible setting"= nightmare.
Invisible settings were created to show only "diamond" and not the metal holding them in place. Like channel minus the metal look rows in-between. Gives the look of a big diamond vs several small. Clean, smooth. A few years after purchasing the setting, problems began. I hardly wore it bc I was "afraid" and it was " in the shop" a lot ($). Didn't even know to argue- I paid each time it was fixed (at the place I purchased the ring). I would pick it up from repair and it would still have a loose stone!! I only discovered the larger picture this summer when I took it to a local jeweler to fix (different shop than my regular) and they would not TOUCH it--nor sell invisible settings in the store. That was curious...did some investigations....and talked to a few other jewelers who also "would not touch it" to fix it. That was that. Shame.

My ring was also 18K but I think that is beside the point. My mom also has an invisible setting with no problems (so far) but she does not wear it ever day (as I did my ring) and has not had it checked for loose stone. I would self-check mine every time I wore it. I think once a problem started with loose diamonds......it was just an on going battle that I would never win.

You can see the pics of my old ring and the "invisible setting" in the setting (18 total princess cut, 3x3, diamonds, 9 per side). Now 17......one missing!!!

It all starts with the Diamonds. You see, Invisible-Set Diamonds are not normal Diamonds at all. They may look like regular princess cut stones (diamonds), but they are very, very special. The Pavilions (Base of the Diamonds) of these stones are cut with notches and grooves that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, or hardwood floor, into a Metal Frame or Matrix. They SNAP into place and form a beautiful smooth wall of Diamonds!
It's Slick, it's Stunning, and contemporary. it sounds absolutely wonderful doesn't it? Actually, NO! You will always worry about durability
We at the Diamond Connection we strongly believe that Invisible Set Diamonds are the worst types of mountings to ever created.! Stay away from them!
The Diamonds fall out!
Yes, that's right. These mountings have had problems from day one. Customers bring these Mountings back into the store all the time because their stones are loose and wobbling around or the Diamonds just simply fell out of the Mounting. They fall out like pieces of a puzzle. Not good!
Now don't get it wrong, We are not saying there aren't good Invisible-Set Mountings out there. (We have just never seen one!) You may have one that will last forever. But you would be the lucky one. I'm only talking from experience and seeing these rings come in for repair one after another.
Here's the real Problem:
Jewelers can't fix these type of Mountings. (Remember that when you need to get it sized! If they bend the Metal Frame, it's goodbye Diamond!)
And Because these Diamonds are cut with grooves, Jewelers can't just set another Princess Cut Diamond in its place. Jewelers don't even stock these Special Cuts of Diamonds.
Plus, because the Diamonds are unique Cuts, it's not like you could re-set them into new mountings later! Invisible Set Diamond Mountings have to be sent back to the manufacturer to have another Diamond specially Cut and fit into the Mounting.
Be careful when buying Invisible-set diamonds, not all are made correctly. One hard knock and just like an ice-cube tray, diamonds popping out every where!
There's no way around it. (Unless your Jeweler rigs your mounting by somehow fitting in a normal Diamond and Gluing it in place!) Either way, you may be without your ring for weeks. And then, who knows how long that new Diamond will last?

one quick Pricescope thread....sure there are more than this one out there .....

Cinnamon stick - I absolutely LOVE your new setting. It's sleek, smooth & sculptured. Its very striking :appl: I hope you rock it & love it as its just perfect!

I fully sympathise with the invisible setting. My original engagement ring was invisible set, with 3 quads of 4 diamonds, made to look like 3 larger princess diamonds. The ring got dropped onto our kitchen floor (slate) & the impact of the diamonds against each other cracked one in half  No jeweler would touch it. One likened it to a tiled wall - you can't just remove one tile & replace it without breaking all of the surrounding tiles. I had worn that ring 24/7 for 6 years & was beyond devastated, as I am sure you were too. My insurance company wouldn't pay for a rebuild as they stated it wasn't a suitable design for daily wear. I did get a happy ending though, as I was able to buy my 1.02 carat pear, which is D colour VS2, as my husband kindly matched the insurance payout & we made a trip to Birmingham's diamond district. And the insurance company let me keep my original ring, so for my 40th next summer my husband is having a new ring made with the remaining 11 diamonds.

WOW!!!! Thank you for taking the time to talk to me!!!! Linking invisible setting to tiles is a good visual!! Yes. I was devastated as you were!!! I liked my old setting and did not have any desire to get a new one. I never contacted my insurance co bc our deductible is $1000 and I knew that it would never cost $1000 to fix a loose stone, or now the missing stone. (I had about three LOOSE stones fixed over the years at $175 per time, and then the lost side diamond which I wont be replacing). It was mentioned to "rebuild the ring" but why bother??? More money after bad, and, who is to say the setting would not have issues again after the rebuild? Sinking ship. INTERESTING your insurance said "not suitable design for daily wear". Wow.

Can you clarify? The insurance co did give you some money for the damage? Was it for repair? They gave you back the cost of the setting you paid?

I paid $3700 for the setting (8 years ago). After MANY CALLS and complaining with the shop I purchased the setting at (they also did ALL REPAIRS over the years and the custom prongs)---they offered me store credit, for the return of my setting, minus 30%. I felt I should take that and run. They originally said -40% in credit and I complained about all the COSTS and ongoing issues. Now, I am still getting a bit of a "run around" from them so we will see how this ends...........take what I can and run. I asked them if they could build a band ring with the diamonds (band) that are remaining (as you are doing)--channel set. Even trade. The lady at the shop "she was checking with the owner". It has been over three weeks now with no word back. SO FRUSTATING! I emailed her just yesterday and said "just give me the credit". No word back. I will need to call her. I was worried bc I read that invisible set diamonds chip easy and removal from the setting may/may not chip them. I was worried if the store used my old diamonds to build a band, I would end up getting a call that said I had to PAY for new diamonds since "some are chipped" and cant be used. I need this nightmare to end.

Can you comment on this at all (using your old diamonds for a new setting?) OR the insurance co. How they helped you? My deductible is $1000 and I only paid $3700. Store is giving me $2500 credit (so they say). I don't want ANYTHING fro that store...making a band would be nice but I am not hearing back and afraid of a problem when they are making the band from the diamonds (which will end up costing me)

What a mess.

I am glad your story ended well! Sounds like your new ring is very pretty!! Pear shape is gorgeous! I like that not everybody has pear. SMART idea to build a band with the left over diamonds.

You are having a right old nightmare, aren't you?! It is very frustrating & upsetting. I didn't have much trouble getting mine resolved, but even THAT was frustrating, so I can feel your stress.

My insurance company were great. When I first called them after the ring was damaged, they asked me to take it for 3 independent jewelers reports. All 3 said they wouldn't touch it, one coming up with the tiled wall situation. My husband still had the original paperwork & receipts, so I also took it back to them for a further report. They were willing to replace it with an identical ring free of charge, even though they no longer stock that style, but my concerns for the ring having a long & happy life being set in this manner were too great, plus my local trusted jeweller also advised me against taking a replacement. The ring was purchased in 2006 for £2,350. Our 3 independent jewelers reports stated replacement value in 2012 as £2,950 to £3,300. The insurance company wrote off the ring as un-repairable & paid the money into my account within 24 hours of agreeing to settle on £3,200, less their excess of £200. So effectively they paid £3,000 for my ring, and agreed I could keep it for sentimentality as it was only worth scrap value to them. They also advised that they wouldn't insure a new ring if it was invisibly set & used for daily wear. It was all horribly distressing, but they were rational & more than fair.

A few weeks later when I had literally finished grieving for my ring & decided (thanks to lots of PS time) that I wanted a pear or marquise solitaire, we made our trip to the diamond district. And on the way in the car, my husband said he was going to give me another £3,500 to the budget, and I LOVE my new pear. It hasn't been super smooth & has had 2 settings within 18 monthd already, and it currently with my lovely jeweler having its hopefully forever setting made. But I DO feel it is the engagement ring I would have chosen for myself if I had been involved in the initial purchase. And becase we bought it from a trader & cut out the middle man, it is certified & insured for £3,000 more than what we paid.

Thank you Alex T for all that detailed info. about your insurance company. Sorry for the gap with responding.

My update??: this is long......not for the weak.... (LOL)

I returned to the shop where I purchased the invisible setting and the store gave me a $2,700 USD credit as promised (minus $1,000 from what I paid- only gave me 70% return--no credit for the $400 in repairs or the $500 custom prongs I had them design). I asked the manager AGAING about building a band with the diamonds from my old setting and she said "I would need all new diamonds (they would all chip when they are removed)".

I looked and looked for a ring to purchase -an hour in a shop that is 20x20 (small). I wanted diamonds since I was returning diamonds. I only saw ONE ring I liked that I felt was a fair exchange. It was marked $8,000 (sooooo over priced). The manager pulled out her calculator and did the punching of numbers (as they do at that store)----and told me "my special price was $3,900" (gimmicky). This meant I would need to pay in $1,200 (15 grams of 14k white gold w/ diamond pave 1.8 cts). NICE ring but I felt it was over priced (everything in that store is over priced IMO). I asked again if there was more wiggle room- she came down $100.00. $3,800. It has been a while since I shopped for gold/diamonds and I know gold is up--but still, seemed like a lot of money for what it was (pave). I have a pave ring 1ct w/ 14K white gold I paid $1300 for it (that was awhile ago ,and prices have gone up, but $3,800?). Just felt it was overpriced (the store is higher end). Was a heavy ring though.....

Ok, so I asked one more time about building a band with my invisible set diamonds with the store credit of $2,800 (that is an expensive store credit). Again, the manager said I would "need to pay in towards the building of a band bc would need all new diamonds--cant reuse old bc they would chip removing...". My sticking point was I could not justify "paying in" after all the run around and difficulty I had with the setting.....frustrated, I left with the store credit and gave them my old setting. No too happy bc I knew any ring I would ever find I would need to "pay in" bc the shop is expensive. It was the principal why I didn't want to pay in toward another ring. The lady also put a 6 month expiration on my credit which made me very mad and caused me to feel they were not trustworthy. She changed it to "no expiration" when I pointed it out to her but...."really?".......seemed sneaky to me. It really left a bad taste in my mouth.

On the 1 1/2 hour ride home from the store I decided to call the local jeweler who set my diamond center stone in the new setting (topic of this original thread). He saw my original invisible setting two months ago when I first lost the stone. I asked him if he could remove my invisible set diamonds and make a band with the diamonds/gold. He said yes. Maybe $1,000 cost of labor (not so much materials) to build a new ring with the diamonds and reuse the gold (or trade it in toward the new band-not sure which he said). Then I shared what the store said (about needing all new diamonds/cant reuse). He said there is a slight risk some may chip but chances are they will be ok.

I called the original store back while I still was driving home from getting the store credit and said "put my ring in a safe spot---I am coming back to get it tomorrow and will be returning my store credit to you". By this point--enough was enough. I am not sure who is being truthful but I do know I felt unsupported with the first shop where I purchased the ring (no return emails/calls, put a 6 mo. expiration on the store credit, saying I would need all new diamonds....). Customer service was not bending over much for a family who has done business with this store for at least 15 years (mostly my mother). They "know us". Repeat customers.

WORST PART???
READY???? This is where it gets good......if you are still reading......

When I returned to pick up my old setting on Sunday and give back the store credit, I let them know I was just going to just find someone local to reset my stones and make a band with the invisible diamonds. You want to know what she said back to me???? "oh well I am sure we could use some of the stones and make a band for you, most of them should be ok". THAT PUT ME OVER THE EDGE! I said " you had your opportunity yesterday when I asked several times about making a band, you told me I would need ALL new diamonds, I tried to work with you yesterday and you were firm with the fact you could not reuse ANY diamonds"....She replied "oh well, I am sure our one jeweler could remove them safely, he has a laser, only one or two may chip"......and kept talking and talking....trying to sell me on staying with them for the business!! I was so over it by then. I told her it was a "trust issue" now. That was that. I took my old ring and left. She said to call in a week or two if it falls though with the other jeweler. Really?

I am pretty sure I am losing money not working with the original store, but I am making a choice on principal and trust. I am happy I took a stand bc I feel they were not honest with me and tried to pull a few things over my head. I did read that there is a chance of the invisible set diamonds chipping upon removal bc they cut a grove near the bottom of the diamond when making an invisible set ring, but not "all the diamonds" as she claimed. Also lowers the value (if resold as loose stones).

Fate has now taken over. It will be the most expensive band EVER if you add up all the bills ($3,700 original, $500 custom prongs, $400 repairs loose diamonds, $1,000 rebuild in a band)---wow!!!!! I know I cant look at it that way .....I need to look at it as $1,000 for a new ring and forget the past. That adds up to be more than my husband paid for my center diamond 1.1ct!!!! OUCH.

It is what it is.

I am looking at this point to build a triple row channel set band (diamonds only on top half)--wide. May need to buy a few more stones to complete the look. Not sure how much that will add to the cost (small 3mm x 3mm princess diamonds). Was told maybe $1,000 reusing my diamonds and gold (not sure he will reuse the gold or give me credit for it). Total ct weight may be 2.5 cts. Same as what I needed to pay IN for the pave ring at the original store. Principal.

GOOD LUCK with your rebuild!

Re: QUICK HELP!!! UPDATED new ring made from INVISIBLE setti

Hello, I just wanted to update this thread since many of you were so helpful to me. Still LOVEING my new setting....but what I am loving more is my new ring made from my old princess invisible set diamonds!!! Pics attached. The local guy use my diamonds that were in the invisible setting that was causing me such a headache..... and created a new band from a pic I showed him. It is slightly different from the pic but nicer!!! Per my request, he added two rows of round diamonds on each end. 14K white, 2 ct total weight, 30 diamonds. Handcrafted (I am spoiled now). This band will be worn on my right hand.

I wanted to share this for anyone who is searching invisible settings because they are having the same issues with losing diamonds/loose diamonds. Problem solved :) Take with my cell--so forgive me.

If anybody lives in the Germantown-ish MD area and looking for a great jeweler I can recommend one......he made this beauty....
