oh WOW! for the amount of crazy things he did.... and lived. i never expected to see something like this. sad..

Oh my goodness! This is very sad. And to be taken away from his wife and small children! oh no.

I just found out about this. How horrible! I feel for his family. In his line of work, he was exposed to so much danger so in some sort of twisted way I guess it should not be a total surprise, but I feel just so bad for his family. I pray he did not suffer much...so sad.

I heard about it on the radio just after it happened, how tragic, and somewhat ironic that after all of the dangerous things he''s done, he is killed in a freak accident! The worst part about it is that Terri doesn''t know yet, she''s on Cradle Mountain and can''t be contacted yet. And his poor little tackers, too... Bindi was already following in daddy''s footsteps, she even had her own show for a while! So sad, he was an Aussie icon.

You will be missed Steve

Steve will really be missed. He was such a fun character on television and he seemed to be a good ambassador for Australia. It is so sad for his wife and children.

This is just so sad.

OMG.. that is just terrible.. I feel very sad. I used to watch him when he came on late late at night before the Animal Planet stuff. I thought he was just crazy and amazing all at the same time. wow.....

this is too sad. to die in a feak way when he defied death all the time...who found him? how tragic for his family...

It is really ironic that with all the dangerous creatures he handled, the one that killed him was a stingray... one of the most docile creatures. Freak accident, yes, but really bizarre. Most everyone that goes swimming in the ocean has swum with rays. I wonder how many people will be scared of them now? True, you always have to be careful, but I''m really shocked that he died this way. All the snakes, all the crocodiles, and it was a stingray... amazingly ironic. I hope his family is doing ok.

We got a text message from a friend in Oz last night sending us this news. I don''t often really feel a loss when a celebrity dies, but I really felt this one.

We saw him just this past December here in L.A. for Australia week...that guy is just so amazingly passionate. You know when you look into someone''s eyes, and it''s just dead like glass? Not him....his eyes sparkled like the best cut diamond...and I really think it''s a reflection into his soul. They say he died because of the one in a million chance that the sting ray hit his heart, but I think that would have been rather a big target on Steve Irwin.

Australia lost a great ambassador today.

This is personal for me. I worked with Terri at Willamette Wildlife Rehabilitation center in Eugene, Oregon in the late 1980s. I still remember the emotion on her face and in her eyes when she returned from vacation in Australia to tell us that she was leaving to embark on a new life jumping on the backs of crocs. My heart hurts for her and her children.

I can''t believe it.

My son came running in and told me in the kitchen. I thought he was joking in some sadistic way ... I told him that wasn''t funny to be joking that way! He said "The Crockodile Hunter" is dead! I told him ... stop it! That''s not funny!

Teri is from my area, and we were all so happy for her! They seemed so happy as a family!!

I never knew him personally, however, I loved his enthusiasim and jest for life, and how he educated the world thru his special venue on TV.

My prayers go out to all of his family, and close friends and collegues. The world has definately lost someone very dear and special ... and Teri, Bindi and lil'' bob ... a wonderful husband and daddy.

God bless.

If it really was such a freak accident, it just must have been his time to go. I have seen families whose fathers have been taken away pre-maturely, when the children were still all so young. It must be a very difficult process to go through, but it made them very strong individuals. I hope that the mother and children can bond together even stronger and get through it together. So sad.

very sad indeed. I wonder if his little children will remember him.

This is heartbreaking.

By all reports, Bindi is extremely close to her father. She idolised him. Bob is about two years old and very sadly probably won''t have any memories of his father.

This is the most hearbreakingly terrible news. He was the most passionate man about his wife and children his country and the in protecting and conserving our enviroment. Yes he was over the top and we often would cringe here in Australia at his antics but at the end of the day I would defy anyone to say that he was''nt a good bloke.
He is to be given a state funneral here in my state Queensland and I do believe he deserves it.
This article about his daughter really encapsualtes that he was a wonderful father.

Vale Steve Irwin

This is really sad news. I told my husband about an hour ago and he couldn''t believe it, either.

Steve Irwin will be missed, and my heart goes out to his family.

I read that he died instantly, did not have a chance. they were filming a show when it happened. it is so sad, and shows us that we should not take anything for granted. sure, most of us are not swimming with stingrays or playing with gators, but still, we can not count on time. each day is a gift. 44 is too young to die, but at least he died doing something he loved and believed in.

I heard of his passing while watching CNN news yesterday night.

My condolence to terri and and kids.

I couldn''t believe it myself either when I read it this morning. With all the things that man has done...I was starting to think he was invincible. So sad.

that is sad.. prayers outgoing for his friends and family.
He provided many hours of entertainment and I learned a lot of things about some very kewl animals from him.
R.I.P. Steve

so sad

This has been such a sad and tragic event, and it has really touched everyone on the Sunshine Coast as well as around the world. The Irwin''s live in a house just up the road from where I live (not his zoo property, they have a second home on the water - for his Croc one boat of course! My parents live near the zoo). It was common to see him around the place and a few of my friends would see him out surfing every now and then, he would always have a chat with them - very friendly and down-to-earth. So the past few days have been hearing or seeing something about Steve everywhere you turn, either people calling into the radio or his Croc Express bus taking tourists to and from the zoo.

Apparently someone has hacked into the "Wildlife Warriors" donation website and stolen money donated by people rather than buying flowers, which is just a disgusting act. There is always someone out there screwing people over.

Anyway, my thoughts are with Terri, Bindi and Bob and I hope the zoo continues to be just as popular as ever.

Crikey Steve, we''ll miss ya!

I am afraid I never watched him, but it is very sad.

But perhaps even sadder is that Germaine Greer has used his death as a cheap attempt to gain publicity to promote her sad self.

In a funny irony I read about her poor form yesterday morning - and last night I went to a live play that was based on GG. It mocked her and the final scenen - she throws her book - the Virtual Vagina (or similar silly topic) - hits the gun - which kills her. It was super relevant for me and I thought - Steve gets his woman

Germaine Greer complains about everything and everyone. The only way she can make headlines is through controversy.

As Jessica Rowe said on Today yesterday people like Greer need to be starved of oxygen in other words the media should have ignored her pathetic posturing
