An update on Ms Lucky: She's doing good. Slipped another lb unfortunately, but still relatively healthy but being picky with food. So, I'm doing lots of home cooking which she likes more. Today will be turkey breast with mixed vegetables. Last night was salmon and oatmeal with cranberries and green beans (whatever works...lol) I still sprinkle on a few kibble bits because if I don't, number 2 will refuse to eat hers.

We just had a good checkup this week which on the surface is good. However, they couldn't get her calm enough because her sister was hyping up the room :twisted2: and being alpha she has to protect her little sister, all the while, they're hiding their heads under my arms...yeah...

So we'll shoot for x-rays next week when she's by herself because she's much calmer and will let them do whatever needs to be done then.

@Matata I love how Atticus just hates being at the vets office...lol

My sweet nieces with Oliver. Who had been under the weather but thank goodness his lab work came back and all looks fine. And he is eating again. I never thought I would be worried about Oliver and food LOL

How beautiful. My current fur baby is 19 and not doing so well. I have had her since I was a teenager. We have a vet appointment for this Wednesday and I'm terrified about what they will say.

Oh, it’s so hard having a senior pet. I’ll keep you in my thoughts for a good outcome for Wednesday.

Her kidneys are not filtering properly. Normal for her age and I guess common for cats. They are suggesting a special food for cats with kidney problems. I believe it’s prescription. My husband took her to the appointment because I had to work. They are also suggesting I give her IV fluids twice a week

. The last vet I brought her to sent me home with antibiotics for possible UTI and told me I probably had a couple more years with her. I wish THAT vet had made these suggestions 2 years ago.

Im going to have to call them and get pricing and figure out what Im going to do. She’s a very picky eater and I’ve been fighting hard to get her to gain the two pounds she has. Im afraid she wont like the other food. Im also worried about the IV thing. I do not even like using eye drops let alone using a needle.

I wonder if anyone else has gone through this.

@SandraLynn, I’ve had a lot of cats over the years but never had to give an IV so no help there unfortunately. Is the prescription food wet or dry? If it’s dry, maybe mixing in a tiny bit of wet food would be more appealing but obviously something to check with the vet on. Also she could take to it with no problem, you never know.

In any event, sending good wishes for your kitty.

My sweet Stuart (white/gray,) who we lost this week to intestinal lymphoma, with his shelter "brother" Sherman (lost 9 years ago to cancer as well) We adopted them months apart, but they absolutely bonded to each other.

I just called and spoke to them. As far as the food goes, they have wet and dry but my girl doesn’t eat much dry food. She picks at at it so I give her some. They said I can buy a few different cans first and see how she likes it. I’m thinking I might have to mix a little something in if she doesn’t like it. For the IV thing, it’s not regular iv fluids, I can’t remember what she called it but it helps keep toxins flushed out of her body because her kidneys aren’t going a good job on their own. The kit is $35 and I’d use the fluid bag until I needed another one which it sounds like one bag last a while. That it totally reasonable to help her live longer and feel better.

I know it hurts, sorry you’re going through such a recent loss. Hugs

Subcutaneous fluids. The vet should be able to teach you how to do that. Pretty routine for people to do for kitties with kidney issues. My guy HATED the special kidney food. Your best bet might be mixing just a bit with her current food and increase from there. Mine didn't eat that either because he liked his food to hold the shape of the container with just a little bit of smooshing apart but not too much.

Thanks for that!! They wouldn’t really tell me much about prognosis and how long they have after treatment. What was your experience?

We didn't get to the point where fluids were needed. My fluffy boy ended up with what was likely cancer in his liver and we lost him to that. He was terribly picky. I never did get him to eat the kidney food. Even with that, his kidney numbers had improved over the last year. (There was a conversation here on PS detailing kidney diets for cats and what it is that they minimize. There may be other nonprescription options that would work as well. Just mentioning so you can use the search for it if you want to read lots of details.)

Prognosis is hard to judge. It depends a lot on how severe it is and how quickly the situation deteriorates. I know many can live comfortably for some years. Others not as long. Those who do the fluids say there are tricks to make it more comfortable and easier on both people and cats. Some cats even sort of enjoy.

ETA: here is the link. (How did I forget that I was the one who posted!? :eek-2:)

At this point I’m going to play everything by ear because I’m learning with an elderly cat that things can change on a whim. Thank you for the link to your thread. It made me feel better about the fact that she might not eat the renal food.

On a cuteness note, she was in a playful mood this morning and I caught this picture. She loves my vanity chair.

They have the best personality!!

I've had dogs with kidney issues and have had to give subcutaneous fluids to both. It's actually not hard, but it is kind of weird because the fluids hang around under the skin (hence "subcutaneous") and look like extra boobs sometimes. The dogs didn't seem to care. As for special kidney food--one of my med school teachers made us eat a special renal diet for a day so we could understand what our patients go through and it tasted horrible. I can only imagine what it is like for our pets. So I agree that anything you can do to make things palatable should help.

Thank you for this bit of information. Im not happy about having to do this but my girl is worth it. It’s a struggle to get her to eat. Some days she eats all her food and other days she does not.

Moved our youngest back to college yesterday, so we took the whole family including Noah. He of course claimed the best room and bed in our Airbnb.

He SO adorable!
