Ready to start my search again - with some guidance

As some of you remember, last week I returned tsavorites I had purchased. Since I am a complete newbie when it comes to colored stones, I was very grateful for the advice I received and know, with your help, that I made the right decision. I want a stone that I will be happy with down the line and not one I settled for because I didn't know any better.
Since I can only purchase a stone that is 7mm round or 6.5 cushion (emerald as well but emerald cuts are not my favorite cut) as the stone must fit into a pendant I already purchased, I am very limited and I don't want to restrict myself to one vendor (Vendor I purchased from said they would contact me when and if an appropriate stone comes in) and I think it best to start contacting other vendors. I originally wanted a stone for my pendant and two 5mm stones for my IDJ jackets, but I think it best to delay purchasing the 5mm stones and put the money set aside for those stones into the pendant stone.

I have seen that Swala and Barry Bridges have come up quite a bit in the forums when tsavorites are being purchased. I would appreciate any feedback on these vendors and any other vendors I might contact.

I am looking for a stone in between medium and medium-dark to medium dark. Truthfully, my newbie eyes can tell only whether a stone is light, medium or dark on their own without input of those familiar with color gemstones. Also, I learned a lot about windowing, extinction and a bit about saturation from my last "adventure" but not enough to, quite honestly, be able to critique a stone on my own. So...with some guidance (if you guys are up to it), I would like to continue the search.

Thanks!

I have not purchased from Bruce Bridges (not Barry) but have heard that he sells all quality of tsavorites. Expect his to be much more expensive than Prima though. I purchased mine from Swala but would caution you about two things - shipping is very expensive ($150 I think) and sometimes the stones look a bit over-tweaked.

Apart from the other suggestions, this is one that I would contact Gene for (he is included above and is Precisiongem). While it is escalating in price, rough is available for tsavorite and the nicest stones I've seen in a while have been coming from Gene. He is about to got to Tucson, so even if he does not have rough now, I would imagine he would be able to procure it there. I would hope, based on your guidelines, he could tell you whether he can help you, and if so, hopefully be able to give you a ballpark price so you know whether or not he should look for you.

Good luck.

Below is info I got from Swala's website concerning shipping costs.
• Returns
Returning gems to Tanzania is an issue. We’ve come to an agreement with a company in North America; they will receive the hypothetical returns.
Sending a UPS from Tanzania costs us $100. We usually charge $60 as we understand that $100 is a lot. We thus lose $40 for every UPS.
From now on, we’ll charge $60 for the UPS, as usual. However, if the client wants to return a gem, we will entirely refund the client but $100. We cannot afford to lose $40 each time someone wants to just view a gem. Thank you for your understanding.
If, for any reason, you wish to return your purchase, you have 7 days in which to notify us from the date you received your parcel. Please get in touch with us before shipping and we will let you know the best way for you to return your purchase.
We offer a full refund or exchange on goods returned in their initial state, less shipping, insurance, and other applicable charges.

If you receive goods in a damaged condition, please inform the carrier company immediately. Do not refuse the delivery, even if you have decided you no longer want the gem(s).

Returns are only applicable for internet sales.

I liked Prima but there is obviously no guarantee when they will have a stone of the size/quality that I am looking for.

Forget shipping and who to buy from for a minute - I want to ask you a question if you don't mind?

You're very precise about colour saturation and size so my question is, if you can't see the difference between medium, medium-dark and presumably dark, does it really matter that much? The whole point of buying a gemstone is to buy one that you see a photo of and go "OMG I have to have that". It shouldn't matter about level of saturation. For example, my preference may be completely different to yours - who's right? (Well me clearly - joke)! No, honestly, we're both right! You might be lucky and that your preference is for a saturation that means the price will be more favourable!

In terms of size, you're severely limiting your hunt being so precise in mm and also cut. Also, I don't understand how a pendant could take a round or a cushion or an emerald cut! Is there a reason for this?

I think the most important issue is to make sure you have a well cut gemstone ie one that reflects colour back to you so no window, little extinction, no wonkiness that'll drive you mad and no obvious inclusions! Couple that with a great price and whether it's the "best" or just "a very very very nice stone" I reckon you'd do better in your search.

Hi LD, let me clarify. I can tell the difference between light, medium, medium-dark and dark but I have difficulty differentiating on my own the subtle differences in color within those groups. I have seen some beautiful tsavorites owned by members of this board that I have loved and they are in the color range I want for the center stone of my pendant . Could I have chosen those tsavorites on my own without some assistance? Probably not. (Prima did have a 7mm round stone in a color that I would call mint but I knew that was not the color I prefer and was not interested in that stone) Hope this makes sense.
I can post a photo of the pendant. I'll do this on a separate post with my i-pad. The pendant was designed to hold a 6.5mm cushion or emerald cut but the original pricescoper who owned this piece, was able to place a 7mm round in the pendant. So, I don't have flexibility in the size and that is obviously a bit of a problem.
I know that I am not going to find "the" perfect stone and am not looking for one. A nice stone is fine with me. That would mean, as you wrote, a well cut stone (no windows!), eye clean, without too much extinction, medium to medium dark (my personal preference), with nothing weird going on.

Hope this clarifies why I need a certain size and shape stone. I did try a 7.1 round stone in the setting but it was too large.

Based on the setting shown, I think a square cushion will fit best. Take a look at all the recommended vendors and inquire. Although they may no specialize in tsavorites, they do get a few from time to time.

Cut and Paste from the abovementioned thread. You'll have to sort through the list a bit because some deal only with a specific gem type like sapphires.

Thanks. That is quite a list! Are there any vendors you would recommend I begin with based on experience or word of mouth???

The vendors who made this list are based on their honesty, good customer service and reasonable shop policies. All have been vetted by many Pricescopers because of their excellent experiences with them. I'll remove a few because they typically do not carry tsavorites.
