Reality checking JA setting: Should I ask for this to be changed?

I am just curious to know if the girdle size has anything to do with why a diamond would be set higher. I have recently purchased a diamond from James Allen with a halo setting and requested the diamond be set low in the halo setting with no gaps (looking for a “seamless” halo). I am afraid it may come out like yours.

My girdle size is thick-very thick and I have been contemplating cancelling my order. I guess if it does turn out like yours with the diamond protruding out, I will have to give them a call.

@evergreen please keep us updated on how your ring diamonds comes out after it’s been redone!

Which halo setting did you pick? In general, no, the thickness of the girdle would not dictate whether the stone was set high or low.

That is good to know. My BF purchased my ring before I found this site and read all the JA reviews and issues people have been having with their engagement rings (setting issues, prong issues, diamond not fitting the actual halo, etc). I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we don’t have any of those issues. Their 30 day return policy is very reassuring though.

This is the setting my BF picked out and the diamond.

We'll keep our fingers crossed! Post pictures when you get it. They did a non-halo setting for me a few years ago and
it is perfection in my eyes!

Sorry for the threadjack @evergreen

@HaloJane2021 luckily, you chose a setting with lots of examples of actual already-set customer rings -- the examples are well customized to the diamond itself, and it's good you were able to indicate your preference to have it set low because it sounds like there may be some latitude in the way the CAD is designed for the individual diamond. I think I will plan, in the future, to mention requests like that to the sales associate when I order, just in case the setting has some flexibility or is being custom-created to the diamond. But particularly because your diamond is being prong-set, perhaps your note will encourage them to use a halo size that will allow the diamond to be sunk relatively deep in the halo (though, of course, the girdle will necessarily protrude above it, and maybe a little more than a diamond with a thin girdle -- we are talking way sub-mm differences, and it will be invisible to a casual observer for sure!). Fingers crossed! I have used JA's return process for a set ring before, too, so it is nice to know that exists as a backup option - but hopefully you're over-the-moon happy with your ring when it arrives. :)

To close the loop on this, I got phone call and a return label in quick succession from JA, and dropped that pretty ring off at FedEx today! And it *is* a pretty ring. This setting checks all my boxes, and I am psyched for when it comes back with, hopefully, a mm or so knocked off the height. ;)

I can’t wait to see it!!! I must mention that most of the reviews with issues were resolved and ended up looking gorgeous (but it did require a bit of persistence w/ JA associates). The ones that weren’t resolved was because (similar to your experience) the attitude of the JA associates were so appalling that the consumer no longer wanted to give them a second chance or do business with them.

Please keep us updated!

Ok, I have one more update -- entirely unexpectedly, the original sales associate called me to apologize, and he did so quite nicely -- he read my post, had the opportunity to reconsider his tone, and expressed regret for it. And I apologized, too, because I did say some not-very-classy things above, haha. He didn't realize I'd already sent back the ring and gotten things cleared up from that end. So -- all in all, I think this has been quite thoroughly handled from a customer service perspective. I think and hope that, absent the involvement of this board, I would have had the same outcome just by following the instructions of the phone sales associate, but I bet it wouldn't have happened as easily or quickly, and I'm happy to have had the air around the first SA interaction cleared.

The remade ring arrived today, and they were taking NO chances with this one being "set too high". That'll do!
:D

(And an obligatory hand shot, although it's almost exactly the same as before!)
