My birthstone is amethyst: according to these newfangled rules, my son's is citrine. I'd like to make a piece of mother's jewelry that takes advantage of the coincidence. I know a lot of amethyst on the market is synthetic, and I'd like to avoid that: is there anybody you guys would recommend for this material? I'm hoping to find a piece that's more integrated than the discrete purple/yellow split emerald-cut that's typical (and now, by dint of its easily replicated appearance, kinda fake-looking). Thanks in advance!

WOW, that's a beauty. It's a leetle bigger than I was hoping - that would make for an amazing statement piece, but I'm hoping for something I could wear every day. So ... maybe more like a modest 15 carats (or less)? And hoping to keep it around $500, if possible. I really appreciate the tip, though - I'm going to be scouring the site on a regular basis now!

Hi Circe :D

Jerry from gemartservices has a few listed (most in the GINORMOUS sizes) but I saw a few in the sub 20ct range (no prices though)

There's an "emerald" cut one (fourth stone down) on this page here http://www.gemartservices.com/newstuff.htm

He may have more that aren't listed on his website. Dana probably does too. It never hurts to ask these beloved lapidaries if they've got something squirreled away :D

I know this is highly unusual but it's going to be a one of a kind piece. See the ametrine at the very end of the page. I know it's pending sale but perhaps Andrew might have something similar if you are interested.

Davi, Tanzigrrl, Chrono, thank you! Those are all wonderful examples. I've never seen anything like the intrusion cut! I'll definitely be contacting the cutters - if I could find a pear with the transition of that gorgeous princess Tanzigrrl posted, I'd be over the moon. Now I know whom to ask - thank you!

****If your price range is $500 for a 15ct stone, or less than 15ct, then you should by all means be able to get a nice Ametrine for that price. You should be able to find a fantastic example of a 10-15ct Ametrine for $500(or less).

***I wouldnt settle for anything less than a beautiful, well cut, finely colored Ametrine at that price point, so if a dealer tries to sell you one that doesnt fit that criteria for that price, move on to another stone or another dealer.

**Another important aspect to this, is that the line of demarcation where the color changes from amethyst to citrine should be well centered and even, or evenly distributed in the stone in that price range as well, as a stone with the color demarcation thats way off to one side, or uneven, or unbalanced in some way is worth much less than a nice "balanced" stone.
