Hi all,

I am getting close to pulling the trigger on a Princess of Hearts cut diamond from GoodOldGold.com. There are 4 that I am interested based on my budget with basic specs (in increasing order of price):

0.92ct F VS2 - http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9991/
1.00ct H SI1 - http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9982/
1.11ct H SI1 - http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9980/
1.07ct H VS2 - http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9994/

I am having trouble deciding between these based on price, size, and quality. The 1.07 H VS2 is at the absolute top of my budget, whereas the 0.92 F VS2 is low enough that I would be able to save some money to use on coming up with a more epic proposal weekend. I am a little worried that the 0.92 F VS2 will be small enough that I'll be disappointed with it, and a little worried that the 1.00ct and 1.11ct diamonds won't perform as well based on their clarity ratings. I was really hoping for something like a 1.00ct F-G VS1-VS2, but alas, no luck. So I guess I am asking:

Will the SI1 1.00ct and 1.11ct diamonds perform noticeably worse than the other two?
Will the 0.92ct diamond be too small? (I realize this is purely an opinion question, and I am not sure what answer I am looking for, I guess just any thoughts relative to the other diamonds would be nice)
Is the H color of the three larger stones going to be noticeably worse than the 0.92ct F one?

Any thoughts on all of this would be greatly appreciated!

All of those should perform beautifully. As long as they are eye clean they really all should be fine. I would however try and reach a 1ct, being that squares face up a tiny bit smaller. Maybe go for the 1 ct h si1?

Actually I take it back, I don't like the inclusion on that h 1ct si1 The color dofference will not effect the light performance. Both will appear white

Personally the 1.11 because it's the biggest and cheaper than the 1.07.

Yeah the inclusion on both the 1ct and 1.11ct are worrying me. What do you think of the 1.11ct inclusion?

I was worried about the square shape affecting the size. How does the fact that it is a cut corner square play into that? Intuitively I feel like the fact that the corners are cut would reflect well on the size, since the corners wouldn't be adding to the total weight? Correct me if I am wrong. If they weigh the diamond in including the corners then that would kill my hopes for that helping me any.

a cut corner that is 5 mm is smaller than a square that is 5 mm.

If a PoH is what you want then get it, don't worry about the size compared to other shapes.

I am definitely getting a PoH, but when looking at carat weights, wouldn't a 1ct PoH be larger than a 1ct regular Princess? I guess in the end it won't matter if other PS people confirm my fears that the SI1 stones have more inclusion that I would like. I am probably just going to have to decide if the extra 0.15ct in the 1.07 H VS2 is worth the extra money over the 0.92 F VS2.

It depends more on the individual stone, it is quite pointless to say generally which breed looks larger for its weight.

What is the price difference?

Just over $1,600.

Make a poll. Epic proposal and smaller diamond, or larger diamond and less epic proposal.

I wouldn't worry about the inclusions on the 1.11. It's hardly noticeable in the pictures (the magnified ones). I'd call Jonathan and see if he can tell you if it's eye clean (which I'm sure it is).

Go for the bigger stone! The proposal is over in a few minutes and the ring lasts a lifetime, hopefully! You definitely need the most size possible with many fancy cut stones, so I'd go with the 1.07 H VS2 since I wouldn't like the inclusions in the 1.11 SI1.

I would at least get to a carat. All the girls will ask her and its much more fun to say it is a carat than almost a carat. Proposals don't need to be dramatic and expensive to be memorable and sweet.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Only problem is the two stone that are more reasonably priced and equal to or over 1ct are more included than the 0.92ct and the maxing-my-budget-1.07ct. I am worried that the inclusion might bother me more than the stone being just under 1ct. Is asking if they are eye-clean enough?

I really think you're over thinking this!!! The 1.11 is the BIGGEST! There's a big difference between your FI staying "I have a 1ct" vs "it's over a 1ct"! And about the inclusion, it's graded AGS! The picture shows a very tiny inclusion and that's a 40x magnification! You'll never see it at that! I would honestly pick that after calling GOG and just to ease your worries confirm that it's 100% completely eye clean.

You are probably right about me over thinking it. I guess the perfectionist part of me is bothered by spending so much on something "flawed." I'll ask if all three are completely eye clean and then go for the 1ct or the 1.11ct. I think they are about $800 apart in price. Is that worth the extra .11ct?

Why not ask Jon at GOG yourself? He's very honest and will give you his opinion on what stone out of the bunch gets his top pick.
