Seriously .. I see that ring and I think of Leon. He has made a few rings like that.

I would not use the blackened metal (however they do it) because it looks too gothy?

good point --i thought it made it less blingy but maybe using old stones (i.e OEC or single cut) would tone it down

I would use Victor or Steven for any ring that has pave.

Steven Kirsch. Personally I don't like the blackened look, but that's not to say it couldn't look good, and it may work with the look you're going for. I think it would look just stunning with plat and the heart diamond, ruby halo, then another diamond halo on the outside.

So sorry! Steven Kirsch who formerly worked with Leon and as I understand it, he does excellent work and is somewhat easier to work with. He actually is in the same building as Leon.

His new site isn't quite complete but you can get some ideas:

I have one piece with blackened gold and it is gorgeous. But it is all white with that little touch of black. I'll show you (sorry I do not have a decent picture, but it is beautiful in person!). But my tendency would be not to do it on the ring you are planning. I think it will be prettier without.

holy cow that necklace is AMAZING!

Thank you! I am just sorry I don't have a good picture! It was one of the best finds I have ever made! It has a rose cut diamond in the bezel. It is a high end piece and I happened upon it on ebay and later saw it retail at 4 times what I paid! I had been looking for a South Sea pendant for a long time, and just happened to be at the right place at the right time! Anyway, the blackened gold is complimentary to it. I just don't think I'd like black with the rubies. I'd want the rubies natural color to show!

diamondseeker - I love the necklace .. it is so pretty!! I can't tell the blackened gold but it is darn nice!

bgray - I also second Steven. He is really nice and easy to work with. I know he has been wanting to do a color stone and more creative project so this would be great. I have seen some pretty creative designs from him.

I looked at a few more blackened halos and I don't like it ... makes it look cheap versus just less formal. I am thinking that design might look great with Belgium pave on the outer halo so the edges are rounded.

There was one blackened metal ring I liked ... it was made by Mike Robinson.

I agree that it looks so much like a Leon Mege piece. LM, VC and SK all do beautiful work so check out their portfolios online and see what you think. Personally I think Leon's work all has a bit of an edge to it that would keep it from being too sweet. He sets his stones quite low so if you don't like that I'd make it clear from the start what you want. He has done some spectacular pieces with ruby melee.

I can't wait to see the finished product. I sure it will be a knockout!

thanks I will get in touch with him. its tough--i want it to look vintage but not too gaudy or prissy or sweet due to the heart.

P.S.: DS, that is one of my all time favorite pendants! It's perfection!

If I may offer a dissenting opinion - I think what makes that JAR ring is the juxtaposition between the sweet, romantic heart shaped diamond with the rich, red rubies and the unexpected, edgy element that the blackened metal provides. Without the blackened metal the ring wouldn't be nearly as interesting or eye catching - it would be sort of insipid and girly and not nearly as striking.

It is such a stunning ring, and isn't that old cut heart just to die for?

Have to agree with this, without the oxidization it would look like a very regular halo ring.
JAR uses this blackend silver to give his pieces a softer more romantic feel mimicking the dark colour and patina of true antique pieces, without it the design and feel would be more modern and blingy and not nearly as interesting in my opinion.

Keep in mind also the size of your heart will greatly alter the look of this piece, the JAR ring features a very large diamond that can stand it's ground agains the ornate setting, a smaller diamond would need a bit more thought to look it's best than a copy of this design.

I have to say I agree that the blackened metal pushes the ring over the edge from sweet to edgy. I love edgy, pieces with an unexpected element. I wouldn't remove it from the design. Overall, very cool ring!

Thank you for the insightful thoughts: I am using a heart shaped ruby instead of a diamond and going to do the reverse. I am also contemplating single cut diamonds???

anyone have any heart ring designs to share???
