I have been on the grey spinel bandwagon for the last year and reached out to some of the vendors mentioned in the pear thread (thanks!). One option is this substantial square step cut that the vendor recommended be recut to the emerald shape I prefer. But I noticed a crack on the side, I tried to capture it in a screenshot but I only have videos right now. Vendor says it can be removed during recut, but now I am nervous this will negatively affect the recut.

Any advice for, against recut and who would you recommend?

Who will eat the cost if the crack grows during the recut process? I had that happen to me. Stone was selected by the lapidary so he ate the cost of the stone and all since the end result was a sub 1 ct stone instead of 2 ct stone.

Are you also stuck with it, if it ends up being much smaller than anticipated?
And is the vendor facilitating the recut?

The vendor seems pretty smart to suggest to you a flawed stone that they probably have a hard time selling as is because of the crack.

But for the right price, why not? I don’t know what that price might be but it has to be a bargain to take the risk...

Thanks for all the advice. Yeah, it is priced lower but still quite a bit as it is a 5ct stone.

I have no idea what a recut would take it down to. I am looking for a specific size as I have side stones I'd like to get out of my drawer. But despite liking the color I don't think I have the appetite to deal with this process. Thanks again

For me it would depend 100% on who the vendor is. If it's an internet rando, then no way. If it's a personal or forum favorite, then maybe...
