I thought I'd share some before & after pics of a recutting project that Jerry Newman recently did for me. Here's the back story: a few years ago I bought a large trillion cut morganite from an eBay vendor (can't recall which one). I had intended to make it into a pendant, but when I received it I was disappointed with the native cut, window, and general lack of brilliance. A "learning stone" if you like. It wasn't expensive enough to go through the cost/hassle of returning it, so it has been sitting in my gem box ever since. Now that I'm older and slightly wiser (thanks to PS), I decided to basically treat the stone as a piece of rough and send it to Jerry for an overhaul. Since it was a trillion, I knew in advance that there would be a good bit of weight loss to cut it in to a different shape with optimal optics. So, we agreed on the "harlequin hexagon" pattern, in an effort to maximize recovery and create something unique & interesting. Suffice it to say that I am thrilled with the results! His fees are very reasonable (I think), and he was great to work with too. Check out the before & after pics:

Love the recut - enormous improvement in the stone's performance - and really love the hexagon shape! For sure Jerry is an artist. It would be interesting to know the carat weight and dimensions of the original and recut versions if you happen to know them.

Sorry - forgot to mention the specs... The trillion was 13.8mm x 13.8mm (7.5 carats) and the hexagon is now 9.6mm across (4.1 carats). No plans yet on how to set it -- maybe a halo in RG?

Lovely! It went from plain to gorgeous and unique!

Hi,

Nice difference. I have used Jerry for a few recuts. He does a lovely job and gives it his best.
good decision

Congratulations and well done! That is a great advertisement for Jerry Newman. Beautiful cutting.

I've been trying to reply to this for 45 minutes and finally realized that this site must not like the Chrome browser, it just wouldn't let me login. ANYWAYYYYYYY.... it's worth figuring out to comment on how gorgeous this stone turned out!! beautiful. Just beautiful. (and I'm not partial to Jerry at all) ;)

Congrats!

That recut really brings out the colour in the stone - very nice stone in the new cut. I love the idea of the RG halo!
Not a bad loss, overall, to end up with that dramatic result.

Thanks everyone for the kind words! :D Jerry knocked it out of the park for sure. In fact, I've already sent him another stone to recut. More on that later...

The recut is lovely. It must be nice to have gone that route and achieve such a beautiful result.

What was the original colour? It looks mostly some other hue with some pink undertones (unless the lighting is affecting the photo) but a delicate pink after the recut. It is still quite a good sized stone and a halo in rose gold will help deepen the colour.

The color is the same as it was before the recut (original photo is not very good - makes it seem like the stone had some orangey tones, which it didn't), however, to me it looks a bit more vivid now. I'm sure that the lack of a window now has something to do with how the color shows.
