Registering at less *scary* places

So, what do you think? Do we need a less ''scary'' registry?

  • Yeah, those places are uber-intimidating.

I''d say choose a more vanilla store in addition, not because those are necessarily intimidating, but because I would also like to give my guests an option for a ubiquitous store like Sears or Macy''s. That way they won''t have to drive to a neighborhood they would never otherwise shop in.

Wow, I''m quite surprised anyone would find Crate & Barrel intimidating.

FI and I went to look round when we were in the US (I went to ALL the stores you guys talk about - just so I have an idea what they sell!).

I thought C&B was great - and very reasonable. Maybe that''s because I''m used to UK mega-prices? It was way nicer than Habitat which is probably the nearest that we have.

I agree that people can definitely go off registry, and I certainly agree that they should try to buy you something that isn't a version of what you already have. I mean to register for 2 nice sheet sets about 140 each set. I clearly HAVE sheets, but I obviously want those for a reason. Please don't buy me cheap sheets. I'm perfectly capable of doing that for myself. But antique silver candlesticks? I'm there man.

For couples close to me I usually purchase engagement gifts. NORMALLY the couples aren't going to have a big engagement party (although there are exceptions) so they haven't registered. So I buy them the nicest toasting flutes, in the style that I think would suit them, that I can afford. Most couples want toasting flutes for their wedding anyway... so here's a jump start on that. AND I include a gift receipt. Don't like them? Return them!

At every wedding I've attended that I've gifted the couple toasting flutes... they've used them, and thanked me for the thoughtful gift on their wedding day, and told me how much they appreciated having a special set from a good friend (or family member). It gives me warm fuzzies.

I, naturally, have my OWN toasting flutes already so they aren't on my registry. But if someone bought me a pair of special ones, I'd love it. I love pairs of champagne flutes, even if they don't match my other stemware.

The only limitation I would put on the registry is making sure that the stores you select are convenient for your guests to get to. I was originally registered at Macys and BBandB, but I added Belk and put all the Macy''s stuff on my Belk registry also just because Belk was located in my husbands hometown, but the closest Macys and BBB are 1 hour from there, and many of his family members do not do online shopping.

It worked out, I just had to be sure to keep the quantities of things we still needed updated.

is there anywhere left that doesn''t have a macys??? i think they bought out everything except boscovs.

I just wonder what on earth some people are thinking these days! I had the same response about BB&B as you, Gypsy, and I about fell outta my chair.

I seriously wanted to ask if I should start mailing out my 20% off coupons I get every other week and provide them for everyone as our items range from all of $3.00-$199 for an outdoor rolling cart ice chest. I am really considering letting Rusty pick whatever he wants from Home Depot and call it a day at the rate we''re going with this whole registry thing. Problem is, we really don''t *need* anything between the two of us!!

Sorry if I''m threadjacking, musey, but I have a question about a less scary registry I thought about doing for the same reason your friend mentioned...

I also considered registering at Target and then was planning to return whatever we don''t use, get doubles of, etc... and putting the money towards household consumnables like TP, paper towels or toothpaste, for goodness sakes, but I have just recently heard from a gal at work that they have completely changed their return policies to accept no returns from registries, with or without a gift receipt, even if you received double due to their systems not updating purchases very quickly.

Anyone know anything about this?

WHAATTTTTTT!!!! ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!!!!
yeah, i''ve heard a lot of nightmare recently about target''s registry policies. No receipt, no credit! that is just madness. Are you supposed to tell all your guests to include a receipt w/ the gift?? That is the ONE thing I DON''T LOVE about Target.

Musey,

i don''t think those places are scary at all! It''s not like you are registering at Gearys or Neimans or Tiffany. I mean, there are glasses that cost 2.95 at C&B - it doesn''t get any more un-intimidating than that!

I am registering at Macy''s and Crate and Barrel so far. I was eyeing some stuff at Williams-Sonoma but I am not sure it is enough stuff to justify adding another registry. Then again, I am thinking of adding Restoration Hardware just for some nice bedding. :)

I wouldn''t change a thing if I were you! In fact, I am going to go check out W-S now....
