Hello new here - recently bought a 1.22 CT EC Tiffany ring, used. Now I have it and I love the stone but am unsure about the setting. Am I wrong to have it altered, or to order a different semi mount for this stone? Do people have recommendations about where to shop for semi mounts? I'm not nuts about the cathedral style setting, and I sometimes wish for a warmer gold color instead of platinum... Thoughts?? Thanks

Personally I wouldn't take the diamond out of a Tiffany. They are worth more purely because of the brand, so best to keep diamond & setting together as their serial numbers are recorded.

I would be tempted to sell it complete & start the hunt for a lose stone. You'll get more diamond for your money.

It's beautiful by the way!

Thank you!! I understand... is it also true that Tiffany won't service it now that I have had it sized at another jeweler? TIA :)

Agree with Alex T that the premium for Tiffany is for the ring as a complete package and that separating the diamond from the ring will probably affect the insurance/resale value.

I have heard my friends that it is YMMV with Tiffany servicing now if there has been outside work done. If you are lucky and the customer service representative is feeling nice ...

I think the ring is beautiful but agree that you'll likely be losing a lot of value if you separate it from the setting. I have heard that Tiffany will change the setting for you to another of theirs but I don't know if that's true or if you not being the original buyer or the ring having been sized elsewhere could affect that. But if there is another Tiffany setting you like, it could be worth a shot to inquire.

I'll play devil's advocate here, and say that, you now own this ring. It doesn't own you. Depending what you paid for it, you perhaps could never recoup that selling the ring, as a complete ring. It may or may not have added value as a complete Tiffany ring. You don't like the original setting, and the original setting has been resized by a jeweler other than Tiffany. So, my advice is look at all the angles on this. If the diamond is great enough on its own, you could always remove the diamond, have a custom mounting made or mount it in a readymade ring, and store the original Tiffany mounting someplace in case you ever want it back again. Or, you could sell it. People buy Tiffany mountings and put other diamonds or diamond simulants in it. You own the ring. It doesn't own you. Some people believe in keeping everything intact, original, and preserved. Some others part things out. Such is the world of secondhand goods, lol. Run the numbers and decide what works out best for you.

Thanks! Agreed, I'm not planning on selling. I would like a lower, less delicate setting : I'm concerned I'm going to knock the stone loose from one of the teeny little prongs. I want a basket, not cathedral, that has double prongs at the corners to protect it from my clumsiness! I could see maybe putting another (cheaper) stone in this setting and giving it to my mom, or wearing as a cocktail ring ... Still hoping for advice on good semi-mount vendors. I have a jeweler that can set and customize

Yeah, to be honest my first thought was "no don't do it!" lol, and I guess I still sort of feel that way, but it's your ring, you own it and you can do whatever you want with it. There's really no right or wrong, and it sounds like you'd genuinely be happier with a different setting. I can't help too much with vendors but David Klass and CVB designs have made some beautiful pieces.

Thanks :)
