I lost a ring, with a very special 6 carat green untreated sapphire. I have looked at many different stones but haven't found anything close yet. The prices vary drastically. I am trying to get the color as close as possible. Should I have it recut if I find the right color? does anyone know what a good cutter would charge. This was my first precious stone and I would appreciate any help in how to find something as close as possible. Thanks.

Hi, I'm sorry that you lost what must have been a stunning sapphire. I'm new to colored stones myself, so I'm not sure how much help I can be, but I do know that if you have some photos of the ring and can post them, that will give us a place to start in helping you find a replacement. Some other questions for you:

1. What shape do you prefer?
2. Does the replacement need to be untreated, or is heat treatment, or other treatment okay?
3. Budget?

Green sapphires are easier to find if you are ok with treatments but natural unheated/untreated in the size you're looking for are very limited. Also you have to factor in that green comes in many shades and the one for you is very personal. Do you have photos of your sapphire that you want to replicate - that might be a good starting point.

I know this may be a long shot but I guess you could enquire about this sapphire. It is unheated/untreated. The only thing, it may be long gone due to the date of the post. But hey maybe they have more rough. http://www.gemartservices.com/newstuff.htm

Thank you all for your replies. The link looks nice, but I'm looking for a darker color. I think what made it so unusual is that it was untreated yet was not greyish. I've attached the cert. on it to post more info on what I'm looking for. Any leads are much appreciated.

That is an unusual green sapphire from what I see in the AGTA cert. If anything, there's hardly any blue, and perhaps a touch of yellow at most. The fact that you are looking for such an unusual colour, the large size and untreated isn't going to be an easy task. I am sorry for the loss of the ring. :(sad

I would suggest that you contact the Gemhunters in Australia. They have a sapphire mine and I see a lot of natural green sapphires on their web site. Their prices seem reasonable as well. You never know what they might have that would work for you.

Here is a pretty green sapphire from their web site. http://www.gemhunters.com.au/picture.php?show=1&cat=19&pict=1713&pagenum=2
