Repurpose ideas?

I have this ring on consignment and it's not found a new home. I was thinking of repurposing. However, my first thought of a ruby band won't work because the stones aren't straight.

I thought maybe I could do the rubies in a half crescent moon thing in an earring someday.

Other thoughts that don't involve just scrap value?

It’s beautiful! Maybe the price is the obstacle? You will end up spending quite a bit to repurpose it. Have you considered lowering the price by that amount?

What a gorgeous ring! I am curious, why didn't it get much wear? (too delicate, to intricate, too large, etc.) Also, what type of pieces do you tend to wear most- earrings, pendants, rings, etc. (or all of the above, ha)? I'm sure the wonderful people hear can offer lots of suggestions on this beauty.

The problem is the money I have in the ring. I have some wiggle room, but not a lot and it's hard to find omcs of this size. At the price I think it would fly, I would really take a bath (guessing 5k and under it would go in a day or less).

It's too big. It's too much ring for me. I tend to wear earrings, bands and I have stopped wearing halos and larger settings. I have been leaning into much more streamlined. I have a whole box of rings that sit because I don't want a bigger look anymore. I work from home probably 3-4 days a week and honestly, rarely wear anything anymore. The center is beautiful and I think I would at least put it in rotation if it was a much simpler setting.

I would have a coloured gem, maybe even lab grown, custom cut for the setting then replace and sell the diamond. Then I would just keep the ring as a beloved treasure and trust that some day I my style might change and I would be happy I kept this work of art mounting.

Yes, I wonder if you could have the center stone removed and re-set it in a simple solitaire and wear it or else sell it (loose or in the solitaire).

For the ruby halo setting, I would see if Sako could have his dad custom-cut a cabochon to be mounted as center stone -- moonstone? onyx or black jade? turquoise? iridescent labradorite? Then, keep it or sell it.

[I am with you on the big rings -- I do love them but I don't wear them -- they're hard to part with though!]

I was thinking something similar to this; keep the stone and sell just the setting? Or could the rubies be sold loose?

I love this ring so much. Like seriously love it. For me I know if I bought this ring I would not wear my other diamond rings. They just can't compete.

Did you mean 15k? Because 5K - no way could you price it that low! That would be insanity!

Looks like you have an interested party!

im not into red but that is gorgouse
can you at least wear it while you deside what to do ?

i know your ring is worth a gizillion times more than my Whitby jet necklace but its taken me more than 6 years to get it finally repurposed and im so happy with it
you cant rush these things ;)2

As a fellow-consignor who sent pieces off in March, not one of which has sold, I feel your angst! I hope you can take a deep breath and give the process time. Your ring is beautiful and someone will love it, but the market is really slow right now. Prime time for jewelry sales is Christmas through Mother’s Day. And the lab diamond surge is making people hesitate on buying any diamond right now, imho. And the treat yo self buyers buy when they get their tax return check. You’ve consigned it, so you have chosen to try for more money than a quick sale. Your vendor is very good. You are not going to clear more money by breaking up the ring.

On the other hand, if you just miss it, and want to wear the stone, go for it!

This summer, I sold 2
rings on ebay that had been listed for over 3 years!! No kidding!!! If you are not in need of cash, just sit on it. The right buyer will come along. Maybe try a different consignment service after this contract expires?
I did see the price tho and it seems pretty steep for such a niche market. It seems like a rhr, and the natural stones are pushing up the price. If the only advertising that the ring is getting is on IG and PS, you need to cast a wider net. Most PSer’s and IG folks are all about lab grown bc duh, less expensive. But also, the color of the stone might be putting off the buyer who is willing to pay the amount that you are asking.

You should get that back from consignment and sell it yourself.

@elizat
Make another for a pair of earrings. :evil2:

If that or a pendant isn’t a possibility -
And you want to keep the diamond fir other uses
I really like the idea suggested of having a center cab done, or let someone else go thru that process so they can choose. Or keep it yourself for a set aside treasure to pull out and admire when the fancy strikes.

I do agree on waiting out longer for consignment for the right buyer for this piece if you don’t want to keep the stone. We all know it’s about timing. Not all can be fire sales to fulfill someone else’s bargain steal dopamine rush. Not your job.

Fwiw- absolutely understand the streamlining and not wearing the larger pieces.
The struggle to embrace the hoarding vs not is real. Lol.

I actually love the idea of moonstone! I might do that as a right hand ring. I do love the center. I have been really liking simple fishtail prong settings that are late deco, early retro in the 2.5 to 3 carat range, which is where this stone falls. I think I may ask him about the idea of that. I do agree it's a shame to dismantle the mount, but I have found I wear my simple pieces and the larger ones languish! That may solve this.

Here are some examples of what I'd probably do with the center. It's very, very different than the current and is in line with much more streamlined.

Jocelyn is a good vendor, I agree. I think it's a very specific piece and it's at a price that's something most people have to think about. It's not an impulse. We are in the process of getting ready to move and I think if it doesn't sell by the new year, I may pull it. It will have been 9 months then and we should be settled by then hopefully. I do like that stone a lot. That's good input - I appreciate it.

It's a lot of ring and it is beautiful, but it's so extra for me in that I basically am at home most of the time! The mounting is special but it just sits. I don't think I wore it for almost 1.5 years before I sent it to Jocelyn.

It's better for you to have a ring you enjoy wearing and I love your inspiration pics. When you feel extra you can pair it with bands. :)

I totally get this. I've collected a little bit (and I keep adding more ) but most of my pieces barely get worn- partly because I also WFH now and also because I have littles so 'm just too active with them to feel comfortable wearing these pieces. I keep thinking I should sell some things to clear funds but love each piece so much, it hard to let it go, especially for really big losses. Previous posters have shared great suggestions and it think resetting the center into one you adore so it gets worn and loved often is a great idea. Also custom cutting another stone for the setting is a a really good idea- or perhaps you can just try selling the mount so the buyer can custom cut a gem of their choice- with the rise in LGD this is such a feasible option for many. It is absolutely stunning and I'm sure someone would love to snap it up. In the meantime, I'll look out for other ideas for repurposing and share as I come across. Looking forward to seeing how this beautiful ring continues its life (either via a repurpose or rehome)!

Resetting the center will not make the ring smaller so you will likely not wear the ruby setting again. Have you tried pricing the setting separately?
I see a gorgeous pendant!!!!

Really?! Those look like the "before" picture and your ring is the glorious "after."

Gotta ask -- did someone say something about your beautiful ruby-halo ring? Inlaw? Co-worker? I don't get the rationale. And to take such a financial hit in the process. is it so it's a better fit with your wedding band? As long as there is a ring on the correct finger, that's all the symbolism society needs! Spouse has cycled various rings and combinations off and on that finger for decades.

If there were not so much value tied up in the center stone -- which is not the main draw for me (i.e., we have no big diamond rings) -- I'd buy it in a minute

Not being mean (I hope) -- just want to know. Maybe you have outlined this on another thread. And, as always, it's none of my actual business so feel free to ignore.

Moonstone in this setting would be amazing.

I personally adore the ruby setting, it’s incredibly unique and special.

If you want the center stone, spring it free, re-set it, and sell the setting?

I don’t think the current price is unreasonable (Large rare OMC, heirloom setting with stunning natural hand cut rubies) I think the high end jewelry market is very slow right now, yet prices for major/special pieces seem to keep rising. One thing I’ve noticed is the exchange rate with UK and China etc. has tanked for US buyers. But that might mean someone in UK or Asia might consider this purchase. Maybe target other markets outside of USA? Good luck.

I was thinking on this and if I absolutely had to repurpose this ring I would turn it into the following (keeping the components as close to the original as possible so I could always remember this beautiful ring):

1. Bezel set two tone solitaire
2. Ruby curved band to wear with the solitare
3. Ruby/Diamond cluster component earrings

Here's a horrible attempt at a mock up but it I think the picture better conveys what I'm talking about:

Still would be such a loss to see this beautiful piece go so really hope it sells but I totally get wanting your jewelry to be more usable/enjoyed.

@elizat im with @LilAlex
did someone in your life say to you it was too big or something equally bi*chy ?

Just because youre at home doesnt mean you cant take the bug guns out for a play

i rearly go anywhere except work and i would damage my rings if i wore them to work
but at night watching telly i often sit here with some random bling on just for myself to enjoy

Its a beautiful ring, i think you should give it another chance and wear her to see if you can get used to the size
