I have a garmet steamer that I use to steam wrinkles out of clothes. It works very well and quite a bit if steam comes out at a high velocity. Would using this steamer on a diamond ring work just as well as the jewelry steamers out there, such as the JewelJet?

Also, I have read many posts on the subject, but I am having a hard time figuring out what the steam does that a good ultrasonic cannot do. If I get a high-end ultrasonic to use for cleaning (such as a Crest model with heat), then what would be the advantage of steaming afterwards anyway? The ring I am cleaning will not have pave (thus no safety of stones concerns.)

Basically a steamer helps blast away built up dirt/grime. But if you keep the ring clean (which the average person usually doesn''t, not like PS''rs), especially using the US cleaner, I don''t think it''s necessary. I clean my ring every day, and use the Crest US once or twice a week. I don''t have a steamer, and don''t think I need one. I take my rings in every 6 months to be checked and cleaned, and there''s no difference after they steam it, because it was so clean to begin with. I think you''re fine with just the US.

I think you might burn yourself, but I am sure it would get the gunk off. But I agree with Ellen...if you keep it relatively clean all the time there should be no need for a steamer in addition to your US. Also, most nice jewelry stores will be happy to clean it for you if you ask.

I agree with Ellen and Neatfreak on the US

Thank you for the replies.

Thanks to all of the posts on here, I figured I might as well bite the bullet and get a quality US that will last a long time and can be used for other applications as well.

Ellen: Did you have a different ultrasonic before the Crest? I would ask you for before and after pictures from using it, but I bet your ring never gets too dirty with your cleaning regime.

I tried looking up a Garmet Steamer to see how strong the steam comes out, but couldn''t find one. Is it Garmet of Garment?

I use a heated Crest US and Jewel Jet steamer. I have tried using only on or the other, and although both do a great job by themselves, my ring seems just a little more sparkly when I use both. I also dry the top of my diamond with a coffee filter (for no lint drying). I always thought using steam at the end got rid of any possible water spotting. The blast of steam from my Jewel Jet is very streamlined, thus making the burst of steam even stronger and to the point, so it really does get out any left over dirt of grease.

I think he was just talking about a generic garment steamer.

Yea I was talking about a steamer used for clothes. By the way, I have this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Jiffy-Steamer-J-2000-Residential-Garment/dp/B0000665TD/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1227559247&sr=8-1

And it works amazing. You never have to iron!
OK, now I see. Those don''t work anything like my Jewel Jet as far as gusts of steam go. It seems to me that the power behind the concentrated- funneled gust of steam is what removes the grime. If I had to pick only one method of cleaning, I would pick my heated Crest Ultasonic Cleaner. I just threw in the Steamer because I am slightly OCD when it comes to making my ring sparkly and love having that little extra boost that the steam brings.

(Ya know, I think I may need one of those garment steamers for getting out the wrinkles in my clothes! I don''t iron!)
