Ring shopping experiences

shopping for an e-ring was like a roller coaster for BF and I. It was such a compromise between having a great sales assistant..but no ring/diamond that we fancied, to having a sales assistant with such poor customer service that you'd probably vow never to go back...except...they're holding on to the ring that you really want to try on..
well, we didn't end up going with either, since the first didn't have a diamond of our specifications, and the second provided such a hit-and-miss service.
We ended up buying our ring while we were on a holiday/conference overseas since the australian dollar was doing really well at the time, and managed to save 15ks (they like to mark the prices up heaps and tax us heaps over here). And because we were tourists, everyone seemed extra nice (probably because they'd never see us again). We had the ring selection taken up to our hotel room, and I was able to try them on, in natural light, along with some champagne and biscuits.
That sounds wonderful! :)

He is done after about 40 mins in one place, he says I spend too much time studying everything and asking questions. We went to one place and the sales guy really insulted my intelligence. He tried to tell me no one wears a 6 prong solitaire, really, hello Tiffany? a classic?! Then he tried to tell me a halo with a few small stacking bands would be hello early 2008 and a rehash of the 90s. I asked about the certifications and he said, what matters is what you like. Well, what I would like is to see the certificated and the dimensions and specs of these stones.....
So I have done a lot of online shopping as well as revisiting some places for in-depth looking on my own. I bring my iPad and every place has been great about taking as many pics as I want as well as taking the stones outside. That has been a huge help and I definitely recommend asking to take a lot of pics. Then you can stare, drool, analyze later in private!

Thanks for the abbreviation links aud!

13ct ring  I would LOVE to try that sucker on!!

And then we leave and SO tells me, you were rude to that guy, he was trying to be nice and funny. No, he was either completely clueless, thought I was completely clueless or convinced he could sell us anything. Any or all of the three totally unacceptable!

Definitely. Wow, that is definitely one of the worst I've heard.

No kidding! I had a saleslady tell me once that asschers don't face up smaller than rounds of the same carat weight. I must have gotten a confused "you must be joking" look on my face because she tried to "clarify" by saying something like "yeah, a one carat asscher will look the same size as an ideal one carat round." Umm, ok...bye.

Could be worse! Most have never heard of asschers and try to convince you that if you mean square that I'm definitely talking about a princess cut. Um....no.

Haha, true!

The funniest was when I was trying to explain to a salesperson what an OEC is, and talked about an open culet and chunkier faceting. It looked like a lightbulb in her head turned on and she said "OH! So it's a round brilliant with the end point cut off?"

Face. palm.
