Those of us who grew up in Pittsburgh in the 70s understood that football was not a sport... It was an INSTITUTION. A *religion*.

I remember going with my dad and waiting in the line at the steel mill where he worked to pick up his paycheck. THE topic of conversation was always -- ALWAYS -- football. Last week's game.... Everything they did wrong, and everything they did right. Next week's game and how that should be played...

So very sad to hear about this passing.

He was a living legend to all of us from the 'Burgh.
I always loved his statue in the airport, where they are probably laying wreaths and lighting candles as we speak.
I saw him get inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, 1990. (Along with Jack Lambert)

Apparently they were planning on retiring his number at halftime during Saturday's game. ;(

Noooooooooooooooooooo. Damn. I ate lunch with him a couple times when I was a teen. Both times it was just coincidence that I and a few friends were in the same burger joint as he and we waived at him and he'd call us over to join him. He was a very nice person.
