Hey everyone,

So I ended up purchasing the following diamond:

Round Brilliant
8.16x8.20x5.03mm
AGS Triple Ideal
I Color (AGS 2.5)
SI1 (AGS 5)
2.057 cts
34.5 degree crown angle
40.9 degree pavillion angle
56.3% table
61.5% table
Negligible fluoresence

I also got a GIA cert and the one difference was color (GIA gave it a J, rather than an I). The appraiser and jewler who have seen the stone say it looks like an I, not a J.

I will be mounting the stone in the Crown Lace Petite setting by Michael B http://www.michaelcfina.com/engagem...inum-petite-crown-setting-MB1-40-160-00.html?

The basket on the setting is different than the one pictured at the above link, however, and is much more similar to the basket of the ring shown at this link http://www.tricejewelers.com/products/Touch-of-Lace.html and this link http://www.michaelcfina.com/engagem...te-gold-lace-pave-setting-MB4-45-998-00.html? (notice the oval/heart-like elements between the prongs)

The shank will definitely be done in rose gold, but I am having trouble deciding whether to do the basket in platinum or RG. All other things being equal, I think my preference would be to do the entire ring in RG. The reasons why I am concerned to do the basket in RG are 1) concern that RG will make the diamond look more yellow and 2) concern that the RG may not be strong enough to hold the diamond securely. Despite these concerns, I am also worried that 3) the ring will look strange if I do the shank in RG and the basket in platinum (not sure how it would look in two-tone) and 4) that although the platinum basket may make the stone itself look whiter, that the lack of contrast between the somewhat yellow stone and the white platinum will, in context, make the stone appear more yellow.

I always thought that yellow or RG would make a stone look whiter (in terms of overall impression) just by virtue of the sheer contrast between the color of the stone and the color of the metal. Based on what I've read on PS, however, that does not seem to be accurate. I definitely want the stone to look as white as possible in the context of the mounting (ie, even if the stone itself looks more yellow in an RG basket than in a platinum basket (not taking into account the contrast between the stone and the metal), if the stone actually appears whiter in an RG setting than in a platinum setting becasue of the contrast (or, in the case of platinum, lack of contrast), than an RG basket would be my preference).

If anyone could weigh in on the concerns I've expressed above, it would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if that was confusing/long-winded.

Thanks!

4) the contrast is not an issue. Between an I/J and rose gold prongs, there is a high level of contrast.

Between gold prongs and an I/J dimond, relative to each other, the diamond will look very, very white.

But people are worried about gold prongs making the diamond look absolutely more colored via reflections.

3) It really comes down to preference... the standard is colored gold band, white metal for the head.

I prefer the standard colored metal for the band and platinum for the head. I want no color reflected in the diamond.

I totally agree w/ DS. I've found that anything other than a white metal results in the color being reflected in the diamond.

I would worry about rose gold prings making your diamond look smaller by not blending in.

Your diamond will still look nice and white compared to the rose gold of the band. I'd opt for a platinum basket - Platinum prongs are more secure: gold will snap whereas platinum will bend which could save your diamond (especially with only 4 prongs to begin with) .

I'll be the odd one out and vote for rose gold basket and prongs. I just love the look of rose gold right up next to a diamond. For my eyes I think it makes the diamond look extra white by comparison. Also for those who have fair complexions it seems to make the stone look like it has a glow since the rose gold helps blur the line between skin and diamond.

My vote would be platinum basket and prongs. I just like that combination!
