My sister is thinking about getting a rose gold engagement ring. I don't know anything about the upkeep of rose gold. Anyone have experience? How is it cleaned? What happens if the ring is mixed metal when she wanted to have it dipped?

I don't understand this question:"What happens if the ring is mixed metal when she wanted to have it dipped?"

DS- I'm assuming that since rose gold is a mix of gold and alloy/ copper she wants to know how to keep it clean and that color. Rose gold doesn't actually have to be re-dipped like WG (i know you know but just stating for anyone else reading), just cleaned with regular cleaner according to the link that I posted.

Thanks, Sarah! I felt she must have a misunderstanding about rose gold since wg is the only gold that is rhodium plated.

I just read the other thread and did not realize that rose gold actually tarnishes. That is a negative to me since polishing can removed gold.

Copper is a particularly tarnishy metal and RG has a lot of it!

"Mixed metal" I presume means white metal or white gold head with rose gold shank. The jeweler puts wax or some other coating on the non-white-metal parts of the ring when doing the rhodium plating on the white metal. Rose gold or yellow gold with a white gold head would be treated the same way.

I probably wouldn't worry too much about the tarnishing and polishing and gold loss. Unless the wearer has very acidic skin or something, the normal wearing of the ring and handwashing will prevent too much oxidation from building up on the ring. I have one 10k YG ring that I hadn't worn in at least 5 years, It had tarnished to a gorgeous dark amber like old 24k gold. But as soon as I started wearing it, that deep dark golden color was gone, haha.

I've hears/read that rose gold might be a little more difficult for jewelers to work with and to cast into intricate shapes, but they seem to have different alloy mixes now that that can be made into practically any style of ring. I think it's Ritani, maybe, that has rose gold pave' rings now?

Hi sorry for the confusion. I was asking what was done with a rose gold part of a white and rose gold ring, when the white gold is being rhodium plated.

Oh they can block any part of the ring that you don't want rhodium plated. I guess they put a coating on it or something that isn't affected by the plating.

It's funny that I like rose gold because it tarnishes. The tarnished rose gold gives antique-looking jewelry a more 3D or sculptural look. It helps "define" the shape/area, if you know what I mean.. For this same reason, I like tarnished silver jewelry too.

I feel like my rose gold band doesn't need much maintenance. I clean it once in a while, using soap and hot water, just so that the little diamonds can be sparkly again. There are some minor scratches at the bottom of the shank, but I haven't re-polished it so far, and don't plan to.

I heard that rose gold is brittle. It's not as mealleable as yellow gold, but is not any wose than white gold either. My impression is, not every jeweler who works on white/yellow gold can work on rose gold, but you really only need to find one good jeweler who can do it, if you need any work done on your rose gold jewelry. 8)

Cookie, I can see how rose gold would be gorgeous on an intricate ring like VanC which you wouldn't normally polish anyway!
