Hi all,

So I've been looking for a square cushion sapphire for a while now with not much luck (see saga here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/looking-for-a-1-5-2-0ct-square-cushion-sapphire.178379/) and it made me think that maybe I should start considering round stones, since square cushions have proven to be immensely difficult to find. It got me thinking since many eons ago, my plan was to get a RB diamond set in a cushion shaped halo. Now I wonder how that would work with a round sapphire in a cushion shaped halo setting? I don't know if that's a bad idea since the shape of the center stone may be much harder to camouflage with a colored stone, since it doesn't blend into the metal and melee like a diamond center stone would. Thoughts??

Here's an example of a gorgeous RB diamond in a cushion shaped halo setting: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-dream-ring.158378/... To be honest, I didn't even realize the center stone was round until I read the comments! Do you think I could achieve a similar effect with a sapphire? Have you come across other sapphires or colored stones set in this way?

Finding a round sapphire will take even longer than your search for a square cushion. The natural shape of corundum rough is rarely suited for a round stone. Also, the example you linked to is an all diamond setting (all white), so the round blends in well with the square halo. A round blue will look more obviously out of place in such a setting unless you use fishtail prongs like those in antique settings. The downside of that will be that it's a lot of metal in a delicate halo look.

Chrono is correct, round Sapphires (other than small accent stones) are difficult to find. I am so bored with ovals and love the brilliance of a round that I still search for the rounds and they are out there. Same goes for Ruby at least the same or even more, very hard to find a round cut Ruby. Personally I think the search is worth it to get the added fire plus setting them is easier/a more versatile shape. Best regards, Lee

You're right. It blends so easily when it's a diamond and everything is white.

You could get an oval (ovals seem to be much easier to find) and do an elongated cushion halo. This one kinda works like diamonds though, everything is in the same colour tones.

Here's the only example I could find of a round sapphire in a cushion halo. It appears as though the roundness isn't really disguised at all...

Currently some of the stones that I am having faceted at the stone cutters shop are various ovals, they are already faceted but I want rounds even though I will obviously lose some material. Best regards, Lee

Hmmm thanks for confirming my suspicions. Yeah lin_ny, you're right, that round sapphire isn't camouflaged in the slightest. That rose gold halo setting is actually very similar to something that I saw at a local B&M store. But the one I saw was white gold with an oval shaped sapphire center stone. It's what made me fall in love with sapphire halos to start with!

I suppose my hopes for a round sapphire was just a case of wishful thinking and that the grass is greener on the other side. It's really too bad the vast majority of sapphires seem to be in the oval shape. It seems that rectangular cushions are also much more common than square cushions too, for the same reason. Perhaps I'll keep an eye out for either rounds or square cushions. If I did end up with a round, I think I would just go with a round halo around it, instead of trying to force it into a cushion shaped halo.

Thanks all!
