Hello all..... I'm looking for opinions and/or pictures please. Can a round center stone be mounted with two oval side stones? I've been trying to find examples and am having no luck. Ovals can be set in any direction. Please let me know if you think its possible and even better to post some example pics if you know of any. Thanks!!

Here's a pic of the ovals I'm considering....

I've never seen that exact combo, but you might be able to picture how it would look if the center of this was a round diamond. For some reason I can only picture setting them east-west, like this.

Why do you want to set the ovals with a round center? Do you have an idea of the size of the round you want, or do you already have a stone in mind? Why not three ovals?

Welllllllll..... I already have a round. Its the stone from my original ering. It was a 1.5 carat CZ solitaire in gold. Now I'm allergic to gold and VERY enamored colored stones. But of course the stone is VERY sentimental to me and I would like to remount it so I can wear it again. Then I came across this pair of spinels and started wondering if I could set the three together - and here we are:)

The only possibility I can see is if the ovals are long and skinny, and sized quite a bit smaller than the round. The odds of a successful combo is very slim.

Personally I wouldn't hv a round/oval combo. Visually, the symmetry would seem off and looks weird. What about getting ur centre stone set in a pendant?

I'm thinking your 1.5ct stone is probably 7.5mm round - if you chose small ovals (5x3mm or smaller?) and set them east-to-west with prongs at N/S/E/W so they face up more like marquis-shape stones, you might be able to pull off the Round w/ Ovals - this also depends on your finger size and ultimate ring design.

How big are your spinels?

7 X 5. Oh well, I guess I'll just HAVE to keep looking for different stones to use :wink2:

i think that is a good decision. oval/round combo does not do justice to any of the stones.

I was trying to imagine a north-south alignment with a round center stone, and this image popped into my head:

I think you are wise to wait until you find the perfect sidestones, jbkhere. I can't imagine ovals as sidestones, and the pic derbygal posted did not win me over.

I think it could be done. Sure its untraditional, but who cares!

I was thinking ovals e/w, but this is interesting...

WOW Freke! Where did you find that? Who did it?

Due to the odd shaping combination, the ovals have to be set practically under the round center stone, if you look at it closely. If not, there will be an odd gap between the center and sidestones. Therefore, the entire ring is actually very, very high. Note how the depth of the oval baskets.

Thanks Chrono! I did notice that too when I looked more closely at the pics. I'm going to pass on these spinels for now and search for something else. Thanks all!
