DANNY -- in the audio blurb on this collection, the head of Christies Jewelry used "parure," "set" & "suite" interchangeably. He did note the difference between a demi-parure & a full parure; also that initially a parure consisted of 3 matching items or more but in Victorian times was expanded to mean a bigger amount of stuff.

Laurie, interesting. Thanks.

These are magnificent pieces you've posted, especially the bracelet.

What tiara did Princess Anne get for naming a new ship? Did she ever wear it? Does anyone have a picture?

Hi MJ!

I'm sure you know the tiara in question - it's The Princess Royal's festoon tiara. Since it was presented, it's became HRH's most often worn tiara and even daughter-in-law Autumn chose it for her wedding in 2008.

I forgot to say, the top 3 pieces are untreated sapphires. The last 2 they didn't apparently test.

Yes, Danny, it looks like there's no formal definition for all of those terms. Except "parure," I guess, that's pretty clear.

Laurie, thank you for the photos and the reliable information. These sapphires (the bracelet and pendant/brooch) are very beautiful indeed.

It was naming the Word Unicorn in 1973

Well, whaddya know?!?! I never thought about where the festoon came from. Now I know.

Do you really think it's her most often worn tiara? I think she wears her paternal grandmother's Greek key tiara more than the festoon.

Do you think Zara will also choose the festoon when she marries some day?

Yesterday HE the President of the Swiss Confederation, Mrs. Doris Leuthard, arrived for a State Visit to Norway. In the evening a state banquet was held. It was attende by The King & The Queen, The CP couple and Princess Astrid.

Queen Sonja wore the large diamond tiara, diamond rivieres and one of the diamond cross brooches pinned over the red sash of St. Olav (kind of like the Swiss flag). The Crown Princess wore her amethyst tiara, earrings and bracelet and Princess Astrid wore her golden bandeau with other mathing jewels:

I'm glad I helped, MJ.
Yes, I think the festoon is the tiara The Princess Royal mostly wears these days. We actually only 1-2 times a year with a tiara and last time she wore a simple bandeau. Anyway, last time I saw the Princess Anne with the Greek Key tiara was in 2007 in Oslo. But then again pics of HRH during state banquets aren't that common. BTW, I'd like to see her with the aquamarines later this month in Windsor.

Regarding Zara's wedding tiara (I hope we'll not have to wait a lot), I hope she wears the Greek Key tiara of her great-grandmother Astrid as a form of respect to her ancestry. Though IMO it would also be nice if The Queen (shall HM be alive then) lends her the fringe.

Bobby

Was it not Princess Alice of Battenberg?

Of course I meant HRH Princess Alice of of Greece & Denmark, born Prinzessin von Battenberg! And actually Zara doesn't have a great-grandmother named Astrd. I guess I was still thinking about Princess Astrid of Norway and her golden beandeau and thus confused the two names.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake, Alexander.

Warm regards,
Bobby

Does any one know anything about this tiara posted by josefine (Astrid of Norway). I have never seen it before, not sure if I like it, but am curious about it. Does it still exist or has it been broken up?

Sorry for my long absence, but I was unable to log in properly. So I just gave up for a little while. Now I hope that it works again for me.

Laurensmama, the golden bandeau of Princess Astrid is said to have once belonged to Princess Ingeborg of Sweden. And since Princess Astrid wore it only days ago at the state visit from Switzerland to Norway, we can be quite sure that it is not broken up. More photos of the bandeau can be seen here http://www.angelfire.com/la3/lone_mor/kongelige_a_bandeau.html . But the picture Josephine posted is the best I have ever seen of this tiara.

For everyone that is awaiting the list of tiaras owned and worn by the Queen Mother:

The tiaras she's worn in public:
1. Boucheron Honeycomb tiata
2. the Orintal Circlet
3. the Papyrus tiara - later worn by Princess Margaret
4. the Teck Circle tiara/necklace
5. Turquoise tiara (part of a parure)
6. the Strathmore Rose tiara
7. Queen Mary's fringe tiara
8. Princess Victoria (aunt of GVI)'s fringe tiara
9. the Scroll tiara
10. Delhi Durbar dideme
11. Aquamarine tiara (now with Princess Anne)
12. the Teck Crescnt tiara
13. the bracelets bandeau*
14. the Regal Circlet/Crown

Tiaras she's suposingly owned:
15. a double meander tiara, probably worn by Princess Anne
16. the sold amethyst tiara (part of a parure)

If some tiaras are unknow to you, please let me know so that I can post photos.

*this is a photo Queen Elizabeth's quintet of bracelets by Cartier - an emerald, a ruby, a sapphire and two diamond ones. In her early years as Duchess of York and later as Queen she wore them a lot and at least once as bandeau. In rescnet years, Elizabeth II has worn at least three of these bracelets.
Dear Bobby,
I wasn't able to thank you for your list earlier, because I couldn't log in properly after the up-grade of the forum was installed. But it seems work again for me.
Your list inspired me to make this overview of the tiaras which QEQM has worn. Although I still don't really understand how we know that the two fringe tiaras are different pieces. It's sooo difficult to tell fringe tiaras apart!

Thanks for posting the photo here, Josefine. It's an interesting piece. Rather different/unusual than ugly, IMO.The larger stones look like they can be opals and the coloured ones peridots and garnets. Any one agrees? HRH's other jewels are also interesting - the corsage and the earrings may be a part of the set and thys make a small perure... and possibly the pendant is a real ruby...

Enough speculation! I wish there was a photo of Princess Ingeborg with the bandeau.

By the way, Laurensmama, a photo (and link) of Princess Alice wearing the bandeau and walking hand-in-hand with her nephew to the State Banquet can be seen in the very last post on the previous page where I mentioned the State Visit ;)

Dear Bobby,

Welcome back, Cordata! No need to appologise because as it seems many people (myself included) had problems with either logging in and/or posting photos. It's very nice to see you here again and to see the panel you've created. I must admit that this idea (creating a panel) of Queen Elizabeth's tiaras never crossed my mind.
As for the fringes, well it is indeed hard to tell them apart, especially when the photo isn't with the best quality! But
as we can see from the (not so good) photo, Her Majesty is wearring and a fringe tiara and a fringe necklace. Given that we know Queen Mary gave her her own fringe tiara in 1936 and that Princess Victoria left her a fringe tiara/necklace we can be sure that The Queen Mother had two fringe tiaras in her disposal.

Bobby

Great pictures Cordata. thank you for that. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see some of the older lesser seen tiaras make a comeback with the younger royals? I would love to see the Strathmore Rose or the Bandeaus as a tiara again.

Yes, HM is wearing two fringes. But afaik both can be worn as necklaces. So she might be wearing Queen Mary's as tiara after all? (Sorry for being obnoxious!)

I thought of creating another panel of Queen Alexandra. But I would need everyone's help for collecting pictures and making a list of the tiaras she has worn.
I know about the following:
1. the circlet of her crown worn together with Queen Victoria's small crown
2. the state diadem
3. the Rundell tiara (big and smaller version)
4. the kokoshnik tiara
5. the amethyst tiara
What did I miss?

I completely agree! The Strathmore Rose is beautiful. I heard that it is not longer worn because it has become fragile. But a good jeweller should be able to preserve the piece, shouldn't he? It would be perfect for the future Princess William.

Does anyone know what the large pendant on Queen Alexandrine of Denmark is? I know she had some sapphires, but this doesn't look like any of them.

Thanks,
Bobby

It is a emerald.
this cames mayby from queen Alexandrine (russian family).

the necklace was later broken into a choker and bracelet worn by princess Benedikte.

...

Actually, I don't know how to answer you...The photo is a bit too blurry and fringes in general are almost identicl. So yes, I might aslo be Queen Mary's fringe. But! If you look at the rays of the tiara and compare them with the rays from QM's, you can see that they are slimmer and somehow lesser graduated. Another think that makes me belive it's Princess Victoria's tiara is that the Queen Mother used Queen Mary's as fringe as a necklaceb for other occasions and suddenly she probably decided to wear her aunt-in-low's tiara (on her head) for a mirrored effect, respect or what ever other reason there might have been.

Anyway, even if the tiara is Queen Mary's and the necklace aunt Toria's, the photo has it's place in the panel as it shows the second tiara :cheeky:

Thank you, Alexander. If it really is from the Queen's russian family, it must\ve been part of her mother's dowery/wedding presents or a present to Alexandrine herself. Do you know where the emerald is now? I don't remeber having seen any of her grandchildren wearing it.

The necklace was actually devided in two - one for Benedikte and one for Ana-Maria. Princess Benedikte has worn hers as bracelets.

That's wonderful news, Cordata! Here's what I have to say - Queen Alexandra didn't wear the circlet of her own crown with the small crown - it's the Regal Circlet of Queen Victoria (far more delicate that Alexandra's); There's another amethyst and diamond tiara HM owned, though saddly there aren't photos of her wearing it - http://www.royal-magazin.de/england/queen-alexandra/q-alexandra-amethysts.htm and I'd there's also this crown - http://www.royal-magazin.de/england/queen-alexandra/india-necklace-alexandra.htm and this gold kokoshnik - http://www.royal-magazin.de/england/queen-alexandra/queen-gold-ornaments.htm.

Googd luck with the panel!

Cordata, here are some photos and link for your panel.

Here you can see Queen Alexandra wearing the Rundell tiara with diamond stars in between the diamond scrolls - http://www.royal-magazin.de/england/queen-alexandra/alexandra-rundell-tiara.htm

Also, if you google queen alexandra source:life, you'll get some quite nice and high rez photos of HM.

The book said (as I remember) nothing who the emerald got.

Here a better few of this one. and it said "mystery" tiara. as I remember it was never seen again. (I also know only this sitting for the foto).
I didn't found any source except this website.

And yes, Anne-Marie got also one of the parts - she used it most with her (greek) emerald drops.

back to Alexandra, she also wore the King George Diadem with great impression.
