Royal Jewels

With it being the Daily Mail, I didn't give much credence to their words, but I was interested to see the pictures. I don't think anyone in the UK really objects if the Royals are given jewels, unless they are given by someone in an attempt to buy favour.

I was at university with Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg and I'm always interested when pictures or details about him come up in this thread or elsewhere. I'll be particularly excited if I ever hear of his engagement.

Thank you Diamond Diadem for the photos of a young Alexandrine and Queen Margrthe wearing the sapphire brooch.
I had not seen the photo of Queen Mrgrethe wearing it before, which made me think it may have been a ruby.
Thanks for your time and efforts, Appreciate the pics. cheers

Hi,

I just joined this board to answer the question you had about the brooch that Queen Alexandrine wore. Its a sapphire brooch which Queen Margrethe II has been seen wearing quite often. She received it when she was a teenager and have been wearing it since. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum, Diamond Diadem! And thank you for the nice pictures of Queen Margrethe (young and old).

I'm sorry to say this, but I have to disagree that the brooches are the same... Look at this photo of The Queen (from the wedding of Prince Christian zu Schaumburg-Lippe and Lena Giese in 2009) where she's wearing it as a pendant on a fine chain:
PPE09072529.jpg
http://www.ppe-agency.com/500px/Jul2009/PPE09072529.jpg

In the above photo it's clearly visible that the 2 upper sapphires are facing downwards, as oposed to the way in which the stones in Duchess Alexandrine's brooch are set. We can also see that there is no diamond 'frame' around the stones.

PS: What is known about Princess Margrethe's earrings? I don't think I've seen her wearing them in recent years and they remind me a lot of the earrings that Mary wore at the third of the New Year galas (no pix posted here).
The earrings in the other photo remind me of Fabergé's work.

I know Q Bea's prints are her fashion "thing," but I have so much trouble really appreciating the brooches she wears. They just get lost!

Yes, indeed! This is a problem which often occurs when Beatrix wears one of those elaborately printed fabrics. One could hardly see the ruby brooch HM wore at the private party for Margrethe II's birthday in 2010 and the same happened a couple of nights ago at the State Banquet in Oman.

Since I already mentioned it, here are two photos from the State Banquet which was held in Queen Beatrix, The Prince of Orange and Princess Maxima's honour at Al Alam Palace, Muscat.
HM The Queen of the Netherlands wore the tiara from the ruby parure by Mellerio dits Meller, the ruby earrings and the brooch from the Peacock parure. Though not visible here, HM also wore the bracelet from the ruby parure (MdM) on her right hand and the large floral ruby and diamond bracelet of her left hand.

HRH The Princess of Orange (may I use this title for her at least once?) wore the Peacock tiara, a diamond riviere and earrings. These are, in fact, the same necklace and earrings (in a shorter version) that Maxima used with the first outing of this dress. I don't know if HRH wore any bracelets.

Yesterday (11.01.2012) some members of the Danish royal familty attended the opening of an exhibition named Regent for 40 years - QUEEN MARGRETHE II 1972-2012. The exhibition is of official portraits of Margrethe II and her family made in the last 40 years. At the opening this lovely portrairt of The Queen, The Crown Prince & Prince Christian was unveiled by The Queen & Peince Christian:

Which ones, Bobby??

I like green/violet silk taffeta and the blue with black lace.

The above posted video of the Russian Imperial jewels makes me wonder what other original Romanov jewels survived the auctions in the 1920s? Besides the Nuptal tiara there is another pearl and diamond tiara that is part of the Diamond Fund, but being a copy it doesn't count. I also think that Maria Alexandrovna's large sapphire brooch is still part of the treasury, as are some aigrettes and other brooches. But are there more tiaras, even parures from the Imperial family's collection?

Glad you liked the video Bobby, just very thankful that they weren't all destroyed after the Revolution. It was said that the girls and Empress Alexandra had sewn many jewels in their corsets, after they were exiled. Not sure if that's true, but I wonder what became of those jewels. Very sad what became of the family.

I know when Cromwell took over Britain during the Commonwealth, many of the British Crown jewels were destroyed. I especially loved the ones that Elizabeth I wore in her Coronation portrait. It's a pity very few of those jewels, if any, survive to this day because of war and trifles. ;(

I think I remember that a single piece of regalia still exists from before Cromwell - an anointing cup/ or spoon?

Bobby, do you have any full length pictures? I'm curious to see the rest of HRH dress. To me, it looks far to casual to be wearing with a tiara. I'm wondering if the bottom is a bit more grand?

It's a lovely dress:

Thank you BubblyBear! The bottom is very grand and looks great! The Prince of Orange could not have picked a woman with better coloring to wear orange.

You're right, Maria! Princess Maxima does look very good in orange jewels and clothes. This dress, however, is not in that colour. As can be seen from these pix from Prinsjesdag in 2009, it is pink:

Then I guess we have sismilar testes, BubblyBear!

Here you can see HM with the bluetaffeta dress: https://www.pricescope.com/files/images/margrethesapphires.jpg
And here with the silk taffeta: http://www.president.bg/photo_files/526.jpg

ETA - Here one can see some more photos from the exhibition, including a collage of HM wearing the dresses. I must say that I'm really in love with the blue gown's train. So regal! http://www.b.dk/billedeserier/se-margrethes-gallarober

Forty years ago on this very day the much loved and respected King Fredrik IX of Denmark passed away. Today Fredrik IX and Queen Ingrid's three daughters (and their families) visited their parents' grave and layed wreaths. May they rest in peace!

Naturally (and by vertue of the ammendants in the Act of Succession in 1953), the late King was succeeded by his eldest child, Princess Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur Ingrid, who celebrates her Ruby Jubilee on the Danish throne today. And dare I say that these 40 years have been glorious for both Margrethe II and for Denmark. May Her Majesty reign for many more years and enjoy the love and support of her family and her people! Nine times Hurrah for Her Majesty The Queen of Denmark!

As you may have guessed, there were (and are going to be) some other royal events in Copenhagen today. Among them was a reception at the City Hall. Among the guests were members of HM The Queen & HRH The Prince Consort's family, The King & Queen of Sweden and The King & Queen of Norway.

Margrethe II was all in white and wore some of her ruby jewels - namely the horseshoe brooch that Fredrik IX gave her in 1953 and Queen Alexandrine's ruby and diamond cluster earrings. Beneath the coat HM wore a diamond and spinel brooch from Queen Lovisa:

Queen Silvia wore her necklace of twisted pearls, the smaller of the pear-shaped pearl earrings and the pearl bracelet with her monogram, also the Cartier Love bracelet:

PS: Later tonight we shall see some glitter as HM's guests are going to attend a special (black tie) concert where tiaras will be worn (or at least I'm told so). So stay turned for some updates!

Bobby

Having seen some pix from the concert I can say that is glittering!!! The Crown Princess is wearing her wedding tiara (possibly with the pearls), The Criown Princess of Greece is with her fringe, Catina with the diamond spike tiara, etc. The biggest supriise is Countess Alexanrda with the diamond drop tiara.

You can see some photos here; http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Temaer/2012/Dronning/2012/01/12/112007.htm

Having in mind that this was only the smaller of the two galas, I can only imagine what we'll see tomorrow.

Here are some pics:

As I said, this was only the first of two tiara events in a row for the Danish royal family, their relations and guests. Having seen the choice of tiaras and other jewels for this eveneing, we can now make our predictions for tomorrow's white tie gala more easily. So, here I start:

The (extended) Danish royal family
The Queen - the pearl tiara, pearl and ruby set from the Crown Jewels (or the rest of the pearl parure)
The Crown Princess - (parts of) the ruby parure
Princess Marie - will not be present
Princess Benedikte - the fringe tiara
The Queen of Greece - the ruby parure
Princess Elisabeth - her sapphire tiara
The Countess of Frederiksborg - Queen Alexandrine's diamond drop tiara
Countess Sussie - the fringe
Contess Anne Dorthe - the sapphire tiara
Ctss Camilla & Ctss Josephine - small diamond spike tiara and Queen Alexandrine's diamond bandeau/the small ruby tiara

The foreign royal ladies
The Crown Princess of Greece - the fringe tiara
Princess Theodora - the antique pearl and diamond tiara, possibly with the matching earrings and brooch
The Queen of Sweden - the Nine prong tiara
The Queen of Norway - the large diamond tiara, long chandelier earrings and diamond rivieres
The Crown Princess of Norway - the amethyst parure
Princess Alexandra zu SWB - Princess Benedikte's floral tiara
Princess Nathalie zu SWB - Queen Sofia's pearl spike and diamond star tiara
Miss Carina Axelson - the large diamond spike tiara

On princess sophie of England; anyone happen to note, in her earlier pictures, how much she resembled Diana?

win

Sophie, Countess of Wessex actually commented on the resemblence to the late Princess of Wales. She hoped that she would not be compaired to her and could find her own path within the family, but had gotten used to it since she had heard this her entire life. On a side note with the celebrations surrounding Queen Margarethe, was anyone from the UK sent to represent the royal family?

In looking at CP Mary's wedding tiara again, it looks dare I say it, weak. Was it cobbled together like Sophie, CofW's tiara, or is it a family piece? Pretty I suppose but not crown princess like (yes I know Mary has the ruby parure which is very impressive). Wonder if it will every be "revised" or "updated" or if Mary is too sentimentally attached to it to modify it.

It has been reported numerous times that the Duke of Edinburgh's mother gave him a tiara so that he could remove the diamonds/some diamonds and make an engagement ring for the Queen (would love to know what else his mother had in the vault). Does anyone know which tiara was dismantled and does anyone have photos of some of the tiaras possibly owned by the Duke's mother (which may now belong to the Duke, his sisters or his sisters' children)? I have seen one photo of his mother wearing jewelry. All of the other photos I have seen show her in a habit. Thanks.
