I have had this ring for a long time, its hefty 15 grams . i took it to my appraiser but she could not do one until the air was cleared
about what type of treatments it may or may not have undergone.

She told me about a place 4 hours away that could indeed tell me more about the treatments my ruby has undergone.

Its 14k yellow gold gypsy setting nice ring, at first i hated the stone, but the longer i have had it the more i enjoy its presence

Let me know what you think =)

You do know that the only way to be 100% certain (and then get a reliable valuation/appraisal) is to get a lab report don't you? I'm just mentioning that because if you want a true indication of (a) what has been done to it (b) the value, you need reliable information - not just somebody who is good with coloured gemstones.

It looks a hefty size so if it's treatment free (or even just heated), it may be quite a valuable ring. Definitely getting a concrete "this is ...." is worth it. Have you considered sending it to AGL?

Where are you sending it off to be checked for treatment? I would be wary if it is a gemmologist as he or she may not have the necessary tools nor skill to check for the multitude of possible treatment, which is a challenge for rubies as they continue to evolve and improve. As far as I know, AGL is the only US lab that will do their testing on a set stone although I imagine a gypsy set stone will not be easy.

I live in canada, not sure where to send it out , like you said its gypsy set harder to examine

Does it have inclusions? Something to indicate it is not a lab created ruby?

yes it does, a gemologist was able to determine it was a natural ruby, but was unable to determine the level of treatment if any.

AGL will do a Gembrief on a set stone, but it would be worth your time to call them and see exactly what it would cost (based on the size and the fact that it was set) and what they can and cannot tell you without having to have the stone removed. I sent them two set sapphire rings and they were able to tell me that the blue sapphire was heat only with just the brief and I didn't have to have the stone removed, but the yellow sapphire came back heated, so I had to have the stone removed and shipped back to them to verify further treatment. They are very helpful when you call them.

so your basically saying if its no heat they can grade in mounting, but if the stone is heated, it needs to be loose
to find out what other treatments it may have example beryllium ?

If unheated, then there is no concern for diffusion. With rubies, there is also how much flux residue during heating, plus other clarity enhancement like lead glass filling, resin or oiling.

do you think it is possible to determine flux and other "bad" treatments with the stone still in the mounting??

I have never sent a set ruby to AGL (or any ruby for that matter) which is why I suggested that you call them. They will be able to answer that question for you.

Have you contacted AGL with your questions?

looking at like 138 +15% surcharge for mounted stone plus shipping both ways , i cant afford it currently i will get it done eventually
