rutilated, tourmalinated & strawberry quartz

Yay or Nay?

Anyone have any? I love inclusions so these kinda of work for me. I don't have any (yet) though.

There are lots on e-bay. Are these types prone to being fake/synthetic?

I believe rutile has a high r.i. and is dispersive. Does it do anything fun/dispersive when it is in quartz, though?

I am a little biased because I collect quartz inclusions, and I think they are fascinating. But I have not used them in jewelry.

There is an etsy artist (that I have not dealt with), who puts rutilated quartz over a brightly colored stone (like lapiz or lab opal) and bezels it in silver, it looks very interesting. http://www.etsy.com/shop/stonefeverjewelry

Another inclusion lover here. My favourite quartz inclusion is covallite, aka, pink fire quartz. The covallite platelets sparkle bright pink in the sunlight, just like glitter. Brad at The Gem Trader is the guy for this material (all of mine came from him). I also have a soft spot for fluorite crystals. And hematoid quartz.

I don't think there is a lot of synthetic around but there is plenty of low quality material. Most of it, in fact. I always look for crystal clear quartz with inclusions (except the darn pink fire stuff, which is prone to getting veils and internal fractures).

It depends on the overall look. I dislike it when it looks splotchy or just miss mashed, preferring something that makes it stand out artistically. For example, I've seen rutilated quartz where the quartz has a single rutile needle but is faceted to make it reflect upon itself multiple times, giving the illusion of many needles shooting outwards.

I would love to see an example if you have one to point to.

Yep, awesome stuff. I keep trying to find rough, with VERY little success. I do have an awesome crystal tip of "strawberry quartz" that someday soon might see the cutting machine. I like that stuff too.

Rough or mineral in-situ is artistry created by nature.
Faceted gemstones is artistry created by man / woman.
Faceted rutilated quartz is a beautiful combination of artistry created both by nature and humans.

But I know what you mean....basically something as untouched by our hands as much as possible. ;))

Chrono:

Thanks - those are great examples of both types of artistry ;))

Kind of neat how one needle is responsible for the look of the stones in Chrono's link. I like some of the things in stonefeverjewelry link, also. Oh no, Lady Disdain, you just added another stone to my list of stones to acquire list with the pink fire quartz (very cool).

Sonoma, I got my pink fire quartz from ebay vendor crystalliser. He recently posted a bunch of them, different sizes, and very reasonably priced.

Hey, should we have a thread with cool quartz inclusions or is it too dorky for PS?

Thanks, 1001. That vendor has some neat inclusion stones for sure.

I'd love a thread of inclusions. I have to run right now but either you can start one, or I will later. Thanks !

Are you serious? Nothing is too dorky for PS/CS! I wish I had something with cool inclusions to add to the the thread.

I saw his as well. He has some nice pieces but he doesn't ship to Brazil. Otherwise, he wouldn't have them anymore.

Beautiful - like golden straw strewn around in an upside down glass jar.

There is something both beautiful and calming about that piece, Flygirl. Great find and excellent example.

Oooo! I want one!

I agree, I have never seen such a nice piece, with well defined "medusas" nicely grouped.
