I was being ever so productive and found (thanks to budgetfashionista.com) that goodwill has set up an auction site where stores around the country post items, including jewelry, for bid. Some of the stores even have metal and gemstone testing equipment. Some of it is junk, but some of it looks like it might provide an interesting way to "salvage" stones for other projects while helping out a charity. (Also seems like there is less incentive to misrepresent than on e-bay...) I''m not sure I know enough to try this yet, but I wanted to share it with you all in case others would like to check it out.
Happy hunting!

Sounds like a good idea. A good way for starter projects.

As I grow older (and not necessarily wiser) over the years, my tastes for gemstones have changed. I used to buy small pieces of many types of gemstones. Now, I will only purchase top of the line or exceptional stones of at least 1 carats (2 ct preferable) and those that are uncommon but still sturdy enough for a ring setting. I am also much more selective about the cut and colour. I still have those smaller pieces and look back fondly at them remembering them as a learning experience. But man, all the $$$ I spent on them could be put towards 1 huge quality piece.
