anyone been? recommendations? what to see, where to stay?

let me back up. our 2 year anniversary (eeks! already?!) is coming up in a few months. it''s the "cotton" anniversary. i was thinking of going somewhere cotton related as a surprise to hubby.
this led me to the cotton exchange restaurant and tavern in savannah georgia. the 11-12 hour drive is totally do-able for us. plus i''ve always wanted to go to savannah. so it would be a 3 night stay there. i''m doing some research and found the pirate restaurant and of course lady and sons. plus tybee island isn''t too far away, although not sure it''s a place to go to in the fall.

anything else that''s a must see? dine or stay?

Lady and Son''s is awesome!! Just make sure you get in line early in the day - between 8:00 and 8:30. The only way to get reservations is to stand in line that morning. I liked it a lot better than Uncle Bubba''s (her brother''s restaurant).

Have you read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil? If not, I highly recommend it - MUCH better than the movie! I think it gives you a good feel for the city, and then it''s really fun to see all the places from the book while you''re there. Mercer House was really cool, and so was Bonaventure Cemetary

If you can stay somewhere in the vicinity of Bay Street, that''s pretty convenient. Alhthough the historical district can get expensive.

We also did one of the ghost tours at night. Totally cheesy, but still a lot of fun!

ooooh! thanks for the feedback. i'm definitely taking notes

we're thinking of staying in the historic district. is bay street in that area?

I have always wanted to go (and it''s only 4 hours from us) so I have no suggestions. But please post after you have gone so I''ll know where to go when we ever do

that''d be faaaaaaaaaar. 15 hrs of driving. one way.
but fun. hehe

I love Savannah.... it''s 3 hrs. away from me. If you get a chance, go to Tybee Island. If you love seafood, go to The Crab Shack. I love the atmosphere. Then hit River Street Sweets for some fresh prailines that are TO DIE FOR!

Yes, Bay Street is in the historic district. From what I remember, it''s only one street up from River Street. There are some really nice hotels along Bay Street (although I''ve never been fortunate enough to stay in one). My BFF went to college not too far from Savannah, and it''s where she recommends people stay if they can.

Ride a bike tour around the historic parts of the city, if it is not too hot. It''s the greatest way to get around. And ditto the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - the book. http://www.savcvb.com/ is the visitor''s center information..

Here''s a few pictures from my trip last year. BF and I were there the Friday before Memorial Day.

Yes...too far! 8 is pretty much my limit though we do 10 to get to ILs beach house. It is BRUTAL!

Jcrown, I love Savannah, it is so beautiful and charming; I second the Lady and Sons

You can do a river cruise, take a trolley tour, walk river street like Krispi suggests. I love all the trees covered in Spanish Moss. Tybee is a fun short visit; I would not stay there since the drive is sort of long. When are you going? I have been 3 times and love it every time I have seen it; it is so charming!!
