Hi -

I just found a stone I''m interested in that meets all my criteria - AGS 0 cut, good HCA score, size and color but I just got the AGS report and there is a "scratch" listed in the clarity plot...

I''m thinking the worst here - but figured I would get some more well informed opinions...

hmm. what is the clarity grade?

What is the clarity grade?

I wonder if it could be polished out?

I''m sorry, of course the clarity grade is super important! ugh been a long day...

It''s a G SI1

appreciate all the responses!

Ditto Elle. Is the diamond in house with a vendor? It might be eye noticable or not, hard to say.

thanks Dreamer and Elle!

It''s on it''s way back to the vendor :) It''s a Brian Gavin signature stone if that helps at all.

I''ve been expanding my searches to SI1 based on the research/input from PS but it''s certainly murky water for me

The plots all look so scary even though they are eye clean.

Meaning you are returning it? Or it is coming in from AGS?

Yes, the vendor makes a difference to me at least. Brian picks his diamonds so he would not pick a stinker. Still, if you are near sighted and an eagle eye you will want to ask pointed questions about eye cleanliness. Ignore the plots and don''t use a loupe or stick with VS2.

I know we shouldn''t rely on clarity plots, but based on that one, it looks like a very clean SI1. I rarely see those unless they''re clouds and this one doesn''t mention clouds.

Like Dreamer said, Brian''s not going to pick a stinker. Is this stone from his signature line?

I just looked at it again and noticed the scratch is on the pavilion. Who cares! You will never see it. Seems like a great SI1 to me.

thanks for all the comments Elle and Dreamer!

I guess this is the first scratch inclusion I''ve seen in a clarity plot so I thought the worst and flipped out a bit
8.gif
but now I''m feeling much better about the stone!

Elle - yes its from his signature line and no clouds or anything listed in the comments section

Dreamer - so the pavilion is a good place for this inclusion? Any ideas what it would look like? I''m wondering if I could see it through the table or not? I''m planning on a 6-prong setting so maybe it will be hidden from the sides a bit more with the additional metal of the prongs.

You''re most likely not going to see the scratch from the table, or any angle for that matter. It is interesting though, as I''ve never seen scratch noted on a clarity plot.

Your best bet is to ask Brian if it''s clean from ALL angles.

The green color means it''s external, which would personally be a dealbreaker to me (but I am picky about inclusions).

Hi onespeed, nice shiny shoes you have there...<-----

Also what size is this diamond please?

As this is a hand picked BG Signature stone, I personally don't think you have anything to worry about, he won't select a stone that has any type of durability issue to represent his brand.

thanks Lorelei :) my girlfriend likes shiny things and I like shoes :) so it somehow works out heh
Laila619 - dealbreaker because it would be more visable then other types of inclusions in a typical SI1 stone?

Here is all the info - basically i''m trying to decide between these two stones that fall into my budget. I''m really trying hard to not get into a "analysis paralysis" mode...and one of the major contrubiting factors of choosing a BGD signature stone is how high his standards are. I have given in to the fact that I am entirely *too* analytical to be buying precious stones hah

The G color one has a larger spread, but still within more then an acceptable range. The girdle is slight think...and it might face up a bit small....and then there is the large green scratch in the pavillion.

The H color one is larger and 1 step down in color and the plot is scary looking - but BG says the twinning wisps are good inclusions and its eye clean. There is also a smaller scratch right on the table. My girlfriend would probably have a "mind clean" issue with the H color one, but it is bigger...which does offset alot for most woman...

Glad it isn't just us women that like shoes!!!

Its a dilemma with the diamonds....But really I don't think you wouldn't notice much of a size difference between these two and especially when set. Maybe you could ask Lesley or Brian to compare the two for appearant size and how they compare, if it would be worth going for the larger one. I doubt the size difference would be much at this weight but I can't see the stones, I know L and B would be pleased to advise you there.

The feather is surely the grade setter, not the scratch. That’s a scratch on a single facet on the pavilion side of the stone tucked under the crown. I would be very surprised if it’s visible in the face up position, even with magnification. By all means ditch it if it’s a ‘mind clean’ issue for you but I would not expect it to affect the beauty, durability or value of the stone.

Yah, personally I''m less concerned about the overall size - as you said it''s such a small difference it wouldn''t be noticeable.

I''m leaning towards the whiter "G" since my girlfriend is also more color sensitive - although again I doubt there is much of a difference between G and H she can pick them out but said H is fine to get to this size range.

the only nagging thing is the green external scratch inclusion - there is very little info on PS about those types of inclusions and it doesn''t seem to be one that shows up much.

thanks so much for all the comments/advice so far - certainly is easing my stress a little by just posting about it

Inclusions are from nature, but a scratch is from man.
A scratch is damage from mishandling (most likely it was allowed to rub against another diamond) so it would bother me.

If this doesn't bother you, fine.
It is a mind-clean thing, and there are almost 7-billion minds now, all different.

Thanks Neil - your comments are greatly appreciated! It''s so very hard to find info on the scratches which was causing me to fixate on it. Ah good to know about the feather - I guess because it is close to the edge.

Hi OneSpeed,

An external inclusion is more of a 'mind clean' issue for me, not a matter of whether I can see it or not. If it's not a mind clean issue for you, then go for it!

Brian managed to get photos of the diamond before they left for the weekend!

Opinions/feedback?

I can see the grade setting feather, but not sure how much a crack in the diamond bothers me yet...I can see now that my concerns for the green plotted scratch where really unfounded and I probably should have been focusing on the large crack along the crown. After searching around on PS this feather seems to not extend all the way to the girdle as much as other examples but it is rather large and I can clearly see it in the magnification photos.

I''ll speak with Brian when he returns but hopeful it can be protected or even hidden a bit with prongs (going with a 6 prong head). Otherwise the table is very clean and I''m confident in the durability of the stone since it''s from his signature line.

I think it looks great and having poured over his inventory for the past several months this is one of the better examples in this size that still meets my budget requirements. Lesley and Brian have been amazing to work with and I couldn''t imagine a better company to make this large of a purchase from.

Looks good. Hearts image is just different viewer.

The diamond looks great, the orange is just a different technique BGD are now using.

I actually really dislike feathers as an inclusion - perhaps it goes back to a VS1 stone that I could clearly see the feather on the table and was so turned off when the vendor kept insisting it wasn''t visible. I personally would never buy a diamond with a feather but you will have to see it for yourself to decide. Any chance you get it in your hands before you set the stone?
