Scratched my new ruby ring :(

I accidently scratched my new ruby ring.

It's a 1 carat heated ruby (Burma) from Gemfix. Had it put in a beautiful fishtail setting from Brian Gavin.

Hit the side of the sink today. Has a very small scratch on the side. Can't really see it unless you know it's there and if you look very closely.

So bummed out.

After dinner, I will try to post a glamour shot from BG. It's a beautiful ring.

tx, I am so sorry to hear this. Have to ask though, is it the stone that was scratched or the setting? If it is the setting it is possible that most of the scratch can be burnished out. If it is one the stone, take the ring off, turn it around and put it back on with the scratch facing away from you. This way you wont be staring at it all the time.

It's the stone itself that is scratched on the side. It's a very small scratch, but I know it's there.

Here is a glamour shot from Brian Gavin. I bought the stone separately, and they set it for me. The setting is white gold. The diamonds do not go all the way around so I can get it resized anytime I like. Mr. Brian Gavin was a gem to work with!

When I wear it, I place it on my ring finger as an engagement ring with my diamond eternity (10th anniversary) band. I'm actually wearing it "wrong" -- the "engagement" ring is closer to my hand and the band is closer to my fingers.

I'm sorry about the scratch...of course it will bother you but hopefully all you'll see when you look at it is the gorgeous color in that sparkly setting. (maybe as time goes on).

Oh, bummer! It's a really beautiful ring, stone is gorgeous too. VL's advice is excellent -- you can turn that design around so you don't see the scratch. I know you know it's there, but if it's not in your face it won't be quite so bad. I've done stuff like that & after the initial disappointment wears off, practically forgotten about it. I'll bet you will too since it's such a small scratch. The whole ring is far prettier than any tiny defect.

I am sorry about the damage to the ruby. :blackeye: As hard as we try to be careful, unfortunately, there will be wear and tear on our jewellery no matter how hard we may try to deny it. It is still a lovely ring and I like VL's idea of turning it around so that it is more difficult for you to spot it.

That is a bummer, but I echo the thoughts of the others. It is a beautiful ring, and hopefully you'll eventually forget about damage.

You mention an anniversary ring beside it - I don't know what kind it is, but make sure the diamonds aren't close enough to scratch the ruby. A fellow PSer I know with a beautiful spinel ring had some little marks on her spinel, that she hadn't noticed before - on both sides - she finally figured out it was her anniversary band rubbing against that ring (she didn't always wear it the same way, which is why there were scratches on both sides of the spinel).

Oh I'm SOOOO sorry I remember you were so excitied when you first started posting about a ruby. That is such a bummer. However, look on the bright side. Some people have taken gemstones out of the package- they fall and either crack or lose them completely (yup this girl right here!!!) and then you have nothing to show for it. So at least you only have a tiny scratch, but still have a STUNNING ring!

What is your sink made out of that it could scratch a ruby? Is it a diamond sink? A scratch or a chip? I can't picture your sink scratching the stone.

Most likely a small chip and not a scratch. Not all consumers know the right terminology to use.

You are probably right in that it's more of a chip than a scratch.

I had two custom rings designed by Brian Gavin. The ruby ring was one ring. The other was a topaz ring. The topaz stone came from Gene's store. It's a beautiful 2 carat light peach/pink topaz with a premium cut. It's absolutely gorgeous. Had it sent in a rose gold setting. My friends think it's a diamond.

Will try to post more pictures of both rings to the "show me the bling" thread.

Can't wait to show Gene how that topaz stone looks in a rose gold setting. It's beautiful!

Yea, most likely a chip. Maybe it is not too deep and the stone can be removed and re-polished. Best regards, Lee

This is a good reason to be sure you have valuable pieces covered on your insurance. That chip could have been a crack, and it might have resulted in needing to replace the stone.

It is a beautiful ring so I hope you do post both new rings on the Show Me the Bling forum!
