Screw backs for diamond studs? Question...

Debating changing diamond stud screw backs to something else, like traditional push-on back.

If I screw the studs halfway instead of all the way (no time in morning each day), will they come off or slowly unscrew by themselves during the day, holding phone to ear, etc.?

Do they ever wear away and it will just fall off?

Any other options? Thx and Merry Christmas!

I had mine changed out and never regretted it. I like friction back so much better. I seem to be all thumbs with screwbacks and find them uncomfortable.

I also found screw backs to be a pain.

I really hate screw backs - they hurt my ears and I could never seem to get them tight enough and the earring would flop over- took forever to get them on and off - I had mine changed to regular posts and friction backs and they're much more comfortable and easier to handle.

Complete pain in the neck those screw back settings. I'd do the heavy friction push backs.

I've just gotten friction back studs and they stay on nice and tight. Just be careful when you pull them out so that you don't lose them!

I like the la pousette backs. They are fantastically comfortable and I've worn them for years without any problem (even to bed).

I have BGD friction push backs on my studs and I find they fit snuggly and haven't had any issues... mind you... they only come off to be cleaned!

Denise at BGD recommended that style of back because many complain of the discomfort of the screw type.

I just recently got a pair of diamond studs with the screw backs. I was worried about them because they definitely don't seem to be super popular. I figured that I could just change them out if needed. I've found that they don't bother me at all. I've had no problem with the comfort of them or putting them on. I do sleep in them and I check them throughout the day, just to make sure that they haven't moved.

However, I don't know if I would recommend them if you weren't going to screw the back all the way to the top. I'm not sure what would happen. I'm paranoid. :)

I have both. My top holes are screwback...they never come out except to be cleaned. My larger diamond studs are push back. I lost one at work pulling a scrub cap on and off, so to me, the screwbacks are more secure. However, when I replaced the stud, I had better screwbacks put on but I am still more paranoid with them and am constantly checking my ears when I have them in. My small screwbacks are very easy to wear and comfortable.

I had the same struggling a few months ago and finally chose screw back. I never have any problem with screw back. Only took them off once a week to clean up. But it does take some time to take the studs off or put them back on.

I've had both and the friction backs are by far more secure. The screw backs slowly un-screw throughout the day whereas the friction backs stay put.

I much prefer friction backs. The screw backs are a pain to get on and off and I couldn't get mine on without putting a little bit of vaseline on them before putting them in and they hurt to take off. I definitely don't recommend them.

I really hate screw backs - they hurt my ears

I love my screw backs and have worn them every day for 5 years and haven't ever lost an earring, I sleep in them too. It does take a little while getting used to because the screws will hurt a bit at first but after 2 days of wear I never noticed them. I do check the backs periodically throughout the day and rarely find them unscrewed to the point of danger, maybe 2-3 times in 5 years have I found the back falling off. I had a pair of la pousette backs and both backs disintegrated within 2 weeks of wearing them and I lost my sapphire studs. I have also lost countless tension back studs, the tension rapidly decreases with wear and taking them on and off.

My screw backs made my ears bleed. I switched them out to the lapousette (sp) backs.

I hated screwbacks - they hurt to take in and out, took *forever* to remove for cleaning, and got caught in my hair and unscrewed themselves... I tried la pousettes but the spring locking thing broke after just a few days, so now I'll pick plain ol' pushbacks every time..

i have the screw back ones for all my 'real' jewelry, even my tiny little 0.13 ct studs i wear on my second piercing. i never take them off, only loosen them and scrub them in the shower with a baby toothbrush, and the occasional soak-and-clean, so the safety feature trumped any annoyance they may have.

on an older pair of screw backs, my piercing would feel raw just from twisting the earring, and get irritated to the point of almost bleeding. however, the new ones i've had are much thinner in diameter, and i think that's really helped a lot. the la pousette backs are what i need to try next though!

This exactly!

Thanks! I havbeen wearing night time. One of my ears is a little irritated so I put alcohol and neosporin on it.

Maybe I should try sleeping in them? They are the thinner screw backs. Comfortable in and doesn't hurt taking on or off.
I just don't want them to come off/unscrew while I sleep or get dirty from shampoo/conditioner getting on it while in the shower..
what do u do with that??

I've never lost a screwback but I have lost friction style earrings. I love screwbacks as, for me, they're much more secure. How tight you screw them (ie halfway, all the way) is a personal preference and doesn't affect whether they unscrew off easier or not.

I've had my screw backs for...23 years? They were a college graduation gift. I remember them being a bit difficult to put in/take out at first, but that didn't last long. I never sleep in earrings and probably wear my studs five or six days a week.

I know my hair's oils and spray in conditioners a well as my finger prints and who knows what kind of dead skin cells build up on my earrings, so I loosen them just enough to clean around them, and use a baby toothbrush in the shower. I do this AFTER I've already rinsed out my conditioner. I push the earring forward from my lobe and clean under and around the earring, then push them back to clean behind my lobe and between the backing. This usually does the trick pretty well, but all piercings get funky dead skin cells and cruddy buildup, so I still take it off to do a thorough cleaning once every week or two. Sometimes, after styling my hair, I get some spray conditioner or hairsprays on it, so I do a quick wipe off the surface with isopropyl alcohol. But I do this with my ring, too, at the same time a quick shining. Ok, maybe I have a weird obsession! Lol! But I frequently get comments on how shiny my earrings/ring are by coworkers.. So I must be doing it right :).

And from loosening it for the daily cleaning, I always tighten them every morning, too, so I know I'm safe all day! :)

Heavy double notch posts and heavy tension backs. Those suckers aren't going to come off and you only need to tighten with needle nose pliers every so often, depending on how often you remove the studs.

I changed my screwback earrings to regular posts and backs. I take them out every night for cleaning and put them back in after I am all dressed and ready to go. They're insured so if the worst happens, they can be replaced. This was the best route for me because the screwbacks hurt my ears going in and out and there was no way I could sleep in them. My ears get very irritated if I try to sleep in earrings anyway.

Personally, I can't wear anything except screwbacks. I get paranoid about the idea of earrings just falling out. Lame, I know. But I can't bring myself to buy anything except screwbacks.
