hello all!

a little back story: fiance and family are giving me money this christmas for wedding accessories (the wedding is in may). i have also saved a little bit for this purchase. however, i am more of a jeans and tshirt kind of girl. i never really wear much jewelry. however, since i got engaged, i have started obsessing over diamonds. i even dream about them sometimes! i suppose this is the start of a long love affair :) i would really like to invest in my first pair of diamond studs to wear at the wedding. this will only be my second piece of diamond jewelry (first is ER). i know that i can wear them at the wedding and they will last forever. i have lurked pricescope long enough to know the basics of diamond purchasing.

however, i do have a question...
i'm not sure whether i should try to go with screwback or pushback. i think i would prefer the pushback, but i also think that screwback seems more secure. i suppose my ideal set would be platinum or white gold martini setting with pushback, but i'd be afraid to buy pushback and then end up losing one of my precious studs. i'd be devastated. could someone please tell me the pros and cons of each. what do you prefer? do most companies use screwback?

thanks!

I can''t say much for screw backs because I haven''t ever bought them. I''ve tried them but didn''t ever buy them. I have a 6 diamond stud pairs that I never take out except to clean. All of them are push backs. Only once have I lost one and it was my fault for not getting them inspected for years. I did find the earring back but the backing had to be replaced. And that is a pair I have had well over a decade. Personally I find them to be very comfortable (I sleep in them) to wear and very secure.

Welcome to the Diamond Obsessed Club, my dear! We have VERY DELICIOUS Kool-Aid here... drink up, drink up!!!

OK, seriously, personally, I do not recommend screw ons. They TORE UP my ears. Hated them! Larger-sized friction back (push on) work MUCH better for me, and the studs stay VERY secure.

Also, if you could not easily afford to replace your studs, I would recommend that you insure them, just like your e-ring is no doubt insured. My first studs were smaller (about 1 ctw) and I didn''t insure them. But when I upgraded (to about 1.5 ctw) I DID start insuring them. That would be a big financial *OUCH!* to replace.

And oh, one more thing. I am a jeans, T-shirt and flip-flops girl, too, and I LOVE my studs!!!

Another vote for Team Pushback!

Personally I don''t like screwbacks because they are a hassle to put on and take off, and I don''t feel that they are any more secure than a good pair of pushbacks. IMO the reputation of pushbacks as being "less secure" comes from the super cheapie $1.99 ones you can get at Claire''s, which have very little friction on their backs and have indeed sometimes popped out while I was shaking out a ponytail or pulling a sweater over my head (not that I, uh, wear jewelry from Claire''s, or anything... hey! I was 15! what do you want from me?!). Good pushbacks don''t fall out.

I have both and I dont like the screw backs, they hurt my ears

I have screwbacks and I hate them. I only take them out to clean them because they are sooo much trouble. Then by the time I
get them screwed back on they are already dirty again from the holding with one hand and screwing with the other. I do feel like
the are secure though (but thats not enough to keep me from hating them!)

I have diamond studs set in platinum with heavy pushbacks. Love them. I had to work really hard to get the studs without the screwbacks. I ordered the stones from Blue Nile and had my local jeweler set them. I only had to try screwbacks on once at the jewelers to know immediately that they were not for me. Ouch!!!

I recommend you order the pushbacks, and enjoy your new studs.

I don''t like the threaded posts that are required with screwbacks. They fit fairly easy into one of my ear holes, but not the other one. They are too thick.

I prefer LaPousette backs. Although those little buggers can be tricky, you have two security grooves in the post for protection.

Another thumbs down for screwbacks. I am having mine replaced by my local jeweler b/c they are uncomfortable-the post is too big.

Oooops looks like I''m the lone voice for screwbacks then! I love them!

For years I struggled with pushbacks, losing butterflies, losing earrings, working themselves loose and then I discovered screwbacks! No longer do I lose earrings. Safe, snug, comfy and stay put!

My parents got me screwback diamond studs for graduation and I hated the screwbacks. One, it took SO long to get them on and off that I wouldn't even bother wearing them, and two, they killed my earring holes (seriously, lots of painful redness and inflammation) so I couldn't even wear them long.

I just had them reset from 4-prong screwbacks to 3-prong pushbacks and have worn them more in the last week than the last 2 years since I first got them!

ETA: my pushbacks are super secure - no way are they going to fall off!

Not a fan of screw backs, the threads wear over the years. My fave are monster push backs, they are over sized push backs, and do a great job of holding the diamond stud upright, not falling forward...

Screw backs, also to me take such an effort to put on and take off. I want something easy and the push backs really do that. There is another backing called La Pousette. It''s a disk, and s tension set, once you get the hang of them, they are great.

HTH...

IMO...those are the best.

I wanted screwbacks on my largers studs because they seemed more secure. That done, I hate taking the time to put them in and pull them out everyday (it takes forever!) so I only ever really wear my pushbacks. I''ve never lost a pushback earring (I''ve never lost an earring, though).

I really do think you have to take screwbacks out every day or so for a good scrubbing - imagine the amount of gunk that accumulates within all that threading!

I have both large friction backs and La Pousette backs. La Pousettes were awesome for their security. But since they operated with tiny springs, I felt like they'd slide back a little toward the end of the day. The jumbo friction backs hold on "tighter" and hold the stud nice and tight against my earlobe.

In the end, some days when I am going to be very very active (swimming, sports or going to the beach) I will wear large high grade polymer backs that *never* come off. You have to twist and twirl the posts out because they're so secure. They kind of "mold" to your earlobe and hold the stud nice and tight! They're the next to last ones.

SUPABacks

They're nice to have on vacation when you're boating or hiking - you will never lose a stud w/them! They are super comfy, too. I keep ordering them because I'm afraid to be without them!

ETA: Screwbacks killed my ears. And they also work their way out somehow on my ears - that or my long hair "unwinds" them.

I vote for friction backs. I hate screwbacks; in fact a pair of earrings I just bought are screw back and I am already thinking of having them change them out.

My current studs are pushbacks. I''m not sure if there is a better term for what I have but they do not come off. I''ve had them redone once. I typically leave mine in for weeks unless I''m wearing a pair of longer earings to go out.

I have studs in both screw back and push back and with the screw back set i have, the screws loosen up and become "unscrewed." My best view is to get push back and good insurance.

I''m a big fan of screwbacks. I find them very comfortable. A few years ago I had a pair of tsavorite studs w/ pushbacks. The pushbacks were very secure. But, one day while trying on sweaters one came out. I didn''t realize it at the time and it is gone forever. I was so upset as they were a gift. So, no more pushbacks for me. Good luck whatever you decide.

another vote for pushbacks. i had screwbacks which were fine but they would mess with my ears a little bit..my ears are sensitive. with my next set i got pushbacks and i was a little paranoid but i have had them for 3+ years now and no issues. i just make a habit of checking them once or twice in the day to ensure they are on tight. my pushbacks also have a little groove so hopefully that helps.

Big ditto...I''ve tried to pull the back off of mine just to test them, they will NOT come off unless you squeeze the release buttons together and pull. Extremely secure, and comfortable too.

Push backs. Screw backs hurt my ears. Ouch!

Screwbacks tear my ears up. I prefer pushbacks.

goodness! thanks so much for all the comments, guys. i am thinking that pushbacks or la pousette''s are probably the best way for me to go.

I swear by my la pousetts on my larger studs, and have pushbacks that work just fine on my smaller ones. I had screw backs at one point, and hated them. The la pousettes are something you have to get used to using. Smaller fingers probably have an easier time with them than larger ones.

Put me in the small minority that loves my screwbacks. I''ve had and worn them for...21 years. Yes, when I first got them, they were harder to get through my ears, but my piercings must have toughened up. It hasn''t bothered me to put on my earrings for probably 20+ years. It does take a few seconds to secure them on my ears, but I don''t mind, because I know my diamonds are safe. I wear them 5-6 times a week, but don''t sleep in them so they are on and off daily.

I would avoid screwbacks too. They tore up my ear and I ended up getting them repaired. Then re-pierced. (I process that took 6 months before I could wear normal earrings.) I have 2 ct studs and I''ve had the oversized backings and I''ve had no problems.

Good luck.
