Searching for a sapphire-opinions please

As a novice you might have a better overall experience buying from a US vendor who will source you a stone. It will cost more up front but the process will be smoother and you likely won’t need to return it because if you choose a good vendor they will use their experience to choose something g beautiful.

Agreed. And under 3k/carat really isn't a bargain IMHO. Especially when you're talking about such dark dark stones

The above is over 3ct, a nice deep blue (but not dark/black), and from a US vendor.

I appreciate your suggestions-but one challenge is that I'm looking at unheated stones, which tend to have slightly less perfect color distributions. I've seen many heated stones that fit the bill, but have been trying to find the elusive unheated one of that just-right color.

I have received some options from one US-based vendor, but haven't yet been the exact size/cost/appearance combinations I was hoping to find.

Well you get what you pay for to a large extent so consider that you may need to adapt a parameter to get the kind of stone you want. 5ct for the same price as the fine 3ct examples @lovedogs posted raises some concerns for me about the quality of the crystal and color, even accounting for the overseas price savings.

Agreed

the fine 3ct examples

But the thing is… they don’t want that. She’s seen sapphires in person. She’s set on what she likes. And what she likes isn’t a fine bright open blue. She wants a dark blue, and we all know the dark tone is gonna knock a good chunk of the price off.

That wasn't my impression from what he wrote at all. He said they are newbies who have never owned sapphires before. Seeing a few dark sapphires in local stores with super bright lighting is one thing. Walking around into different lighting with a stone in another. But he can sift as he likes through the feedback I suppose.

They are, but how many times can we say the same thing before we start to become overbearing? I personally showed him with my own photos how the different shades of blue change depending on the light. We've explained the clear benefits of a brighter blue several times so far. If they were gonna change their mind, they would've done so already. If we keep nagging, best we'll accomplish is to ensure they never come back to show the final ring, and that would be such a shame.

Besides, a dark blue sapphire isn't the abomination it is sometimes made out to be. I have one and I wouldn't part with it for anything in the world. Yes, I've acquired other blues, lighter and brighter, all of which I also love, and that hasn't diminished the enjoyment I feel wearing my dark one in the slightest. In the end, it's a matter of taste. Yes, there's the possibility that everyone here ends up right and she eventually comes to regret how dark her stone is. But there's also the possibility that she's thrilled with it and couldn't imagine anything better.

As I mentioned, a big factor is that I'm focusing on unheated stones. The examples posted by @lovedogs were all heated. As you know, heating can make a stone really pop in color and distribution while simultaneously slashing the price a bit.

before we start to become overbearing?

LOL-I appreciate the concern since the vast majority of communication is not written. I have a thick hide and am fairly even keeled, so I try to read things in a neutral tone as well as take things in perspective. (and yes, whenever this saga finally ends, rest-assured I'll be back to post a photo :)

I appreciate the suggestions. Lang is one of many, many sites examined (literally all of the sites on the PriceScope list of sellers, in addition to searching the entire sites of Ebay/Etsy/1stDibs/RealReal/RubyLane/Poshmark and probably 1 or 2 others, countless instagram sellers, and various other random people that appear legit that I come across). I currently have a short list of about 12 rings/loose stones from 10 sellers.

I came across a few other other potential pieces that might make the cut. Some are probably wish-list in terms of how low I can get it and if the opportunity pans out or not. I put a few pictures and some videos they sent here:
(the pendant stone would be repurposed to the ring, reusing some of the diamonds for the halo. R-8 has a little bit of a window, trying to see how cheap it might be had for)

Are you looking at this tone perhaps

Yes, that would be pretty damn close, and would never be kicking that out of bed (if it were unheated)

Omg I love love love love love 19 (the three stone ring).

It is gorgeous!!!!!!!

Pendant is beautiful too! You can’t go wrong with either of those!

Haha clearly I’m enjoying this waaay too much!

I feel like “overbearing” is kind of a PS feature, not a bug lol
