Searching for Sapphires in Hong Kong

Hi All,

I'm beginning my hunt for my girlfriend's sapphire engagement ring! While exciting it is also a bit terrifying - I don't know a ton about gems.

I found these forums a couple weeks back and am already in a much better place than I was - so thanks already! That said, I was wondering if anyone has a jeweler in Hong Kong that they would recommend. I'll be there in a few weeks without my better half and wanted to take advantage of the time apart.

Just to provide some additional context: I'm looking (thanks to these forums!) for an untreated, medium-dark, brilliant-cut, 2.5-3 carat sapphire - hopefully in the $5-10K range!

Are you looking to buy a sapphire in HK? Everything there is marked up greatly as to be very expensive. To get a high quality sapphire is going to take more than a few days. Be prepared to search anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

Hi! Yes - I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity in HK, but you're right - not likely I'd be able to find something in a week. Hoping I might get lucky, since I'll be there anyways. Hadn't heard that it was really expensive - moreso than New York, do you think?

Slksapphire is in the HK area and complained that it seems more expensive there than in the US.
