I have been looking on James Allen for an engagement ring. today i got a strong hint that we should look at some rings locally. I live in Seattle, and I wonder if there are any places which would be comparable in quality and price? my budget is around 5000.

Here are a few independent ones:

Alana Jewelry (in Northgate mall): they specialize I'm vintage and antique jewelry. They also have a lot of engagement rings using old stones and new settings

Fox's Gem Shop: Have a lot of branded gems (like Hearts on Fire)

Turgeon-Raine: very pricy but their store is beautiful

I think the best deals are found online though. No brick and mortar overhead. You can also save on sales tax if you buy from places like James Allen and Brian Gavin. Blue Nile is in Seattle though, so you won't be able to save tax going that route. I've also known people who have bought diamonds in Oregon to save on sales tax. This is a good option if you're looking at something like Tiffany's.

Emma Parker Jewelry. Ask for Tim. great customer feedback. I've wored with him from Florida and been very pleased.

I've been to Fox's. I just stopped by to see some hearts on fire diamonds and the sales lady refused to show them to me. She kept pushing their diamonds on me. I told her I was just there to take a look specifically at the hearts on fire but for some odd reason, she refused to show me. I probably got an SA that wasn't entirely on her game (I usually have bad luck with SAs).

ETA: If you are also willing to drive a little bit to see some H&A diamonds, Wink is in Boise, ID. It's only a 4 hour drive for me but I believe its 6 or 7 for you...

Hi,
I bought my wedding band from Alana (at Northgate Mall) and it is a pretty 14K gold, Artcarved brand, and dh paid a good price. I've since been back there and would NEVER EVER buy a diamond from that store. Most are low clarity and very expensive! Since I found online, the best quality diamond for the best price from Whiteflash. Before my husband and I knew about online vendors, I found that for the dollar, IF you're going to pay retail and want a great diamond (and realizing you're paying b&M prices), that Ben Bridge is where to go in the Seattle area/Alderwood Mall. They are overpriced, but when I brought my ideal-cut diamonds from other vendors into their store, they never critisized them, but told me flat out that the diamonds I had were very impressive. That impressed me! They didn't ever once try to demean their competition.

Agreed with MC. I've bought jewelry from Alana's at Northgate. The pieces are gold jewelry or gold jewelry with gemstones, much of it occasional great deals out of their sale cases such as things with nice vintage jade or semi-precious gemstones --MC is right about their diamond engagement rings - stay away (high prices & I've seen things labeled SI which are clearly I1, etc.)

My experience with Ben Bridge has been great, friendly customer service, positive vibes if you show them something you bought elsewhere, they'll cheerfully offer to clean it with compliments on how nice the piece is. I've only bought a few things there because I prefer to buy pre-owned things at much lower prices.

I've also heard good things about West Coast Diamond & Gem: http://www.westcoastdiamondandgem.com/

Looks like they are appointment only. They have good reviews on Yelp too (but there are only 5 reviews).
