Jane! Your pics are INCREDIBLE. I love the Aurora btw. I especially like the bottom one from the first message! Do you remember where you found it? Sleek, and looks comfortable!

A charm enhancer necklace is brilliant, and an elegant solution, but chains rub in the wrong way when I play. OMG crazy right? So I've spent the night reading the 5 stone threads and believe I will be going to try some on this weekend. It won't be weird at all for me to take the violin into a jewelry store and try these things out while playing right?! :naughty: Maybe they'll turn out to feel too heavy and I'll be back in the other direction...

I will post a pic of that action if it goes down!

A Memoire 5 stone is actually an outstanding choice for you! You could do a 1.25 or 1.50 ctw band and it would be gorgeous!!!!

I am the incredibly lucky to be the current owner of the Aurora. I can't even describe how much I love this band. It's pretty hefty in platinum but in gold I think it would be a managable weight. BGD can scale it to rest comfortably on top of your finger (it goes from side to side but not between the fingers).

Clairitek you are a very lucky girl!!!! It is great to hear about the Aurora being loved at its new home :) your information about the weight is very helpful. I am wondering if I called BGD and just wanted to chat about the Aurora if they would know what I am talking about? Is the Aurora still one of a kind? Or have more been produced since it turned out sooooo gorgeous.

Does anyone have a Memoire 5 stone band that they have hand shots of?

I think there are a few more out there now but they will most definitely know what you're talking about. They're really nice and helpful people!

I really think from the sounds of it that you should not wear anything other than a simple, very very thin, platinum or gold band. Maybe 2mm only. Once you are married, I am betting that's all you will wear anyways!

So, for engagement, you can perhaps get something you will not wear to work at all! You can leave it at home in a safe. Wear it on weekends. Or just insure it and take it to work, sew a little pocket into your underpants for it when you play ::)

In general weight is also a factor, so I'm thinking gold (maybe uncoated white?) but don't know how that would impact the durability of the setting. I really really like the Schodt bezel settings, and was contemplating a bezel setting in a 5 stone ring? Anybody seen one of those?

In terms of good bezel rings, I found this the other day on Etsy and am IN LOVE. You could go with bigger stones if you wanted, or not. It's a 5 stone but has graduated stones.

Jereni-

I love the bezel set 5 stone! It would be very possible to stack that with other rings over time! Thanks for the info. Now I need to stalk Etsy...

Update: so I went into a local jeweler today and got to try on a lot of interesting things!! I fell for the Memoire Memory Fit Diamond Band http://memoire.com/catalog/collections.aspx?products=2234 and found it infinitely comfortable and wearable. Also, it is about a 1.5 tcw so I know what that weight now feels like. I also liked the Sholdt full bezel set solitaire http://www.sholdtdesign.com/Vashon/R523.htm and am now thinking I want them BOTH. They look great together. And the low profile band alone seems wearable when I play. :naughty:

I'm also pursuing a quote from BGD for an Aurora band **edited by moderator. please do not link to blogs per our policies**, but in a size 4.25 its going to have a smaller tcw. Alternately I'm thinking of having the band made leaving out the farthest 2 larger stones, so it would comfortably fit on the top of my smaller finger. Plus I want a lower profile and a slightly longer shank, so all that means there's even less room on top of my finger. I would get a plain band to wear alongside the Aurora which I could also wear on its own if I wanted to, given Dreamer_D's suggestion.

Ideas ladies? What do you think of shaving off two diamonds off the end of each end of the Aurora setting as pictured below (and making the remaining 3 a bit bigger) to make it fit my smaller finger, make it lower profile, and allow the shank of the ring come around slightly farther? Given what I saw today I love LOVE this ring.

I wouldn't alter the design of the Aurora very much at all, I think taking off the two larger end stones will completely change the look. I would ask BGD to 'scale' the size of the stones to your finger size. I got a quote on a modified Aurora about 6 mos. ago, with 20 pt. stones instead of the 30 pointers, and 5pt melee stones, and also a version with 25 pt stones and 7pt melee. I think either version would keep the scale/proportions the same but make it fit a smaller finger. Also, Gypsy posted in a thread a while ago about the changes she would make to the original design, and I believe she said a closed gallery would have been her preference after wearing the band for a while. Let me see if I can find the thread...

Rubybeth - thanks for your input. I have read the thread before and have included several of her suggestions as changes. What is your ring size? So with the scaling your ring would have been more like 1.5 tcw for the .20 version? I've tried that weight on and it seemed very manageable.

Finger it would have been for is 5.75--bug knuckles mainly--but I found an OEC/transitional 5 stone band and fell in love. Total carat weight for the smaller version would be 5x.20 + 8x.05 = 1.40. For the larger, 1.81 tcw. These were just proportions I came up with since .30 stones were out of my price range and I would not have needed an upgrade option.

Are you definitely gonna wear your ring on your left hand? I'm from a family of musicians, one of them a 1st violinist in the national orchestra, and most of the married/engaged people I've seen who play a stringed instrument wear their rings on their right hand. My sister (the violinist) got a white gold bezel set solitaire that was nice and light so she could play with it on her left hand. But when she added her wedding ring it got too much in terms of width along her finger so she and her husband (professional viola player) both wear their rings on their right hand. It's also more the norm in Europe I think, which is where they lived for many years.

Just a thought! Hope I haven't missed anything about this in the forum already

I have the Sholdt semi-bezel & wear it with a five stone wedding band. Mine are all emerald cuts & very comfortable. Not sure if this is the look you're after, but since you mentioned Sholdt I thought you might like to see a picture. I also love the aurora
Here's a picture :))

Sorry for the late reply. I did a quick google image search that day for 'five stone bezel ring' or something similar and I don't remember the website I got the picture from. But it sounds like you're loving the aurora anyway. It is a lovely ring. I'm not sure it would work as a three stone though.

The ring is definitely going to be worn on my right hand. I can always socially wear it on my left, but it's even smaller so the ring will move around.

So everyone can breathe a sigh of relief I've pulled the plug on the 3 stone configuration. We will just see if 5 sub .20s will fit on the band. Btw I love the emerald band Woodmama!! Sholdt power!

This is a great thread, and I love "meeting" so many other musicians on here (though I'm an organist by profession, I have played violin my whole life).
You are so wise to actually take the violin to the jewelry stores with you! People might be surprised, but it's truly the only way to know, and besides, you'll give the jewelers a fabulous story (and a free concert!) that they will probably tell forever. That's fabulous!
I did NOT go about this wisely, and for our 10th we just sold (through Pearlman's consignment, which I can't recommend enough) my original heavy Whitney Boin eternity ring, and replaced it with two precious, low-profile, safe and bezel-set little eternity rings from SingleStone. I'm actually hoping for a third stacking band one of these years. But as for the spinning of something with a center stone - that was a disaster for me, and has resulted in a fat, prong-set solitaire that I hate and can't wear. I'm hoping to sell that diamond, too, to get a low-profile, bezel-set antique style ring (again, SingleStone has my heart).
Have you looked at any of their rings, or you really don't want the diamonds all the way around? What about an engraved, metal-only band for your left hand?
I can't wait to see what you choose, keep posting pictures! Everyone here gives such great advice, this is a pleasure to read!

Lovely, I missed that - thank you!
