Selling my ring... TONIGHT

So I have a buyer interested in my ring, and will be meeting him tonight.

He is preparing a bank draft.

What else should I ask for? A copy of his driver's license?

He told me which bank will be issuing the bank draft, but how will I know it's legit?

Any other tips?

We will be meeting at my husband's work - so very public (he's in retail), security camera's, etc.

I would ONLY accept a bank draft if you are meeting him at the bank that the draft is drawn from. No way otherwise (unless he pays in cash)!

Hmmm, I could ask for cash then?

I agree with diamondseeker. A while back there was a scam with fake postal money orders. With today's technology, almost any thing can be faked. Even cash. If you accept that much cash from him, take a long one of those pens that commercial locations use to make sure the money is legit. There are fake bills out there. I know because I got two of them at the bank.

Meet at the bank, during banking hours or do it in cash only. (actually, the deal at the bank should be in cash too, just have him cash his own check. This protects both of you). A specific comment about banks. Make sure the bank staff knows what you're doing and has given permission. Most are cooperative with their clients as long as everyone minds their manners and doesn't interfere with bank business but you don't want to make it look like you're doing a drug deal in the lobby. Ask for permission first. The same holds for your husband's employer as well. If he's not management, make sure whoever is is aware of what's going on.

I've always wondered about this. I was under the impression that if you receive counterfeit money from a bank then the bank is responsible for the error, but if the counterfeit bill is received from an individual or business then it's your loss. How did the bank handle it for you? I would be very very upset if a bank issued me counterfeit monies and only later found out when I tried to use those same monies at a store!! :angryfire:

I second this! Also, if you go this route, make sure to mark the front AND back of the notes...I do accounting for a retail business and we've had some counterfeit issues lately. The bills passed the pen test and then when we got to the bank for our daily deposit they turned out to be fake! The bank showed us how the bills FAILED the pen test on the back, even though they passed on the front. I was amazed, I had never seen/heard of this before. It just goes to show how technology allows these scams to change and evolve!

My husband's work has a professional "light" to check for counterfeit money.

Thanks denverappriaser, my husband is the manager. I have given the buyer this suggestion as well.

About a month ago, I cashed my paycheck at the bank. Then went about my errands. Stopped at the pizza place to buy pizza strips and gave her a twenty dollar bill. Clerk had one of those pens where you put a line through it and it should then disappear. Well mine did not. Thankfully, I shopped there for years, so I took that bill back and gave her money from what I had before I cashed the check.

I called the police, and they confiscated all the money from that bank transaction.. It was checked and determined two bills were faked. Got the rest back and an investigation is being done. So far, the bank has not repaid me for the two fake $20 bills.

I now have one of those pens and check all money I receive in transactions. Losing money is bad enough, but I would be afraid of getting arrested for unknowingly passing bad money. And it actually happened in my state. A guy had an old bill from before those magnetic strips were placed there. Tried to pay a toll and was arrested at gun point until it could be sorted out.

We bought a car for one of our kids in the last year and we met the seller at our bank and he was present as we asked for the money to be withdrawn and put into their check for him (as he wanted the check to take to his bank to deposit over cash). While we were there, they also notarized the change in owners on the title.

them pens aren't 100% accurate. i tested one of those pen on a chinese newspaper and it passed as real money...

Well I decided to pass on the offer... after lots of back and forth he said he couldn't get cash and would only offer a certified cheque. Um, no thanks!

I'm going to try one more week to see if we get any takers, otherwise I will consign it. I did get a couple of offers from people in the trade, but it was lower than we were willing to accept.

Like everything else in life, if something feels "off", don't do it :twirl:

Oh gosh, good thing you changed the payment options!!! Good lesson for everyone who considers selling second hand! There are good and safe ways to do it and ways that could turn out as a disaster!!!

I think the scariness goes both ways. I am meeting someone tomorrow for a cash transaction at a bank. I wanted to do a certified check and he said cash only. I am scared but can understand why cash is better. A certified check or money order is like cash and if you do the transaction at a bank ... can't they verify it?

I guess all this depends on how bad you want to sell it now and for the price.

Yeah. A) ONLY meet in a bank. They have security guards should anything go wrong. and B) ONLY accept a draft if you can cash it RIGHT THERE in front of the guy real time.

Frankly I'm "meet at my bank" with a cash kinda gal and you don't get the jewelry until the teller has confirmed all the money is legit and it is in my account.

They can only verify it if they are the bank that issued the check. If you are the buyer, I'd want to meet at your bank so you won't be carrying a large amount of cash around. (Charmy, there is a thread asking for your help.)

I think I missed the ring that you are selling - do you have a picture or a link to the listing, two_little_birds? I would love to see it! (but again - I apologize if I missed your original listing...)

For my deal, not local and my bank isn't in this city. Seller suggested I open an account there but too much trouble for me. But I am nervous! If you don't hear from me tomorrow, let's hope I am not dead on a ditch.

Will look for thread.

Enerchi I am selling my ER, the one in my avatar. I had a change of heart and will be going for an antique stone, but with a slightly modern setting (the stone and setting will be from JBEG) ;))

Yeah I understand how it could be scary from the buyers perspective too! But there were too many other things not adding up with this buyer - i.e. too many red flags.

Good luck tomorrow with your purchase!

Well, Charmy, I understand why you are nervous. I am sure everything will be fine, but I am going to say a prayer for your safety, if you don't mind!

beautiful ring two_little_birds! Are you selling online as well? I have a friend that's been looking for a beautiful princess, do you mind if I ask the price?

Remember, even if they give you a bank draft, they can still put a stop payment on it. So meet at the bank and get cash is your best bet
