Setting a Cushion in a round?

I've seen oodles of round stones put into cushion settings, so I was wondering about the reverse.

Is it not possible? Square peg round hole type of thing?
Does it work for some mount types and not others?
Or would you have to add a mm in the setting size? If you had a 6mm. Cushion you'd need a 7 mm round setting?

It would depend on the setting, and on the cushion.

The cushion would have to be square or very close to square.

If the setting was prong-style and without a basket, it would probably work if it was a bit bigger than your cushion (if your cushion is a 6mm square, then the head should fit a 6.5mm or 7mm round).

If it is a basket-style head, it would also have to be sized larger than your cushion, but due to the basket design some of the horizontal metal wire of the basket will likely extend further than the outline of your cushion and thus be visible... for some people this is a problem, for other people it might be acceptable.

I'm thinking it might be possible to do the reverse but the result will be less pleasing. In the case of round in a square setting, the prongs take up the air line so that it doesn't look odd to the eye. In the case of the square in a round setting, you either have to have 4 large gaps or the round has to overhang the setting and the prongs stick out.

Thanks so much Chrono and marymm!

The cushion is exact square. However I was looking at a vintage setting, I don't think the basket would have lined up correctly.

Than you so much for the illustrations chrono! So kind. I figured it would end up something like that but was delusionally hoping for a different result. The setting was nice and very affordable too, so was sad to let it go.

I'm actually not one for cushion cut stones, my fingers are rather short and I feel it makes them look stumpy. But the color was so nice I couldn't help myself. Now I must endeavor on setting a square stone to make it look more round haha.

Thanks again, much appreciated. :)
