Setting Advice for an Emerald

I purchased this emerald from a very nice PS'er a few months ago, and I am looking for setting suggestions. Because it has a larger window, I was advised a basket would help close it, and also help to darken it. Any other suggestions? Halo? Color of gold? And, is this something that could be made to work in an existing setting, or would it have to be a custom piece for it to look right?

Approx dimensions are: 12mm x 11.5mm x 8.8mm

Thank you for any advice you can give me! =)

You might be able to use a square 12mm setting to fit it? Not sure if anyone carries any stock settings that size...

I'd probably go white metal. Gorgeous Emerald!

I would use an 11 x 11 mm square cushion setting if I'm guessing this correctly. Are you going corner to corner in a straight line or corner to corner diagonally?

To help make the window less obvious, I'd set it in a halo that has a more enclosed basket or undergallery. Most emeralds seem to do very well in yellow gold as it brings out the hint of blue.

Thanks so much! I appreciate your input. :wavey:

I really love it too, and was leaning toward white metal, but wanted to get some ideas from the knowledgeable group here. It would be nice to get a stock setting for sure.

eta: Just read your post Chrono, and thanks, I am not 100% sure of the exact dimensions, as I haven't measured it properly, but the previous owner had. Interesting about the yellow gold bringing out the blue.....I didn't think of that.

I have a 9.5 mm square cushion with very rounded corners that did not fit into a 10 mm stock setting but did fit into a 9 mm square stock setting so please have it measured correctly because of the clipped corners.

Thank you, I definitely will. Would you suggest yellow gold throughout? (basket/prongs, shank)

I don't think this is the type of advice you had in mind, but I'll offer it anyway.

Set it into a pendant. Emeralds are SO soft, and it would be super-hard to adequately protect a stone that big in a ring setting.

this is a bit much with all of the random emerald cut diamonds, but i like the yellow gold claws/basket with white diamonds surrounding and a platinum band ...

Thanks for that link, Chrono, kismet's ring turned out great!

I know you're right, Alj, but I would be so gentle with it...lol. I really want to be enjoy it on my finger, if possible.

Thanks for the pic, Slksapphire....I like the yellow gold mixed with the diamonds too.
