Setting dimension question, please advise

I currently have a pear-shaped diamond in a standard (probably Stuller) 14kt white gold basket mount. I am re-tasking the diamond for a different project and I'd really like to put my pear-shaped sapphire in the old mount. My question is, do you think the pear sapphire will fit in the diamond's old mounting? Can you tell based on the dimensions, or is that something that has to be looked at by the setter?

Diamond dimensions (.68 ct) = 6.99 x 4.54 x 3.29

Sapphire (1.02 ct) = 7.00 x 5.20 x 3.70

Obviously, their lengths are almost exactly the same, but my sapphire has wider shoulders than my pear and it is also deeper. Could the prongs be extended or something or is this just a "no go?"

It would be so great if this could work out! I've never done a re-set with an existing mount. Any clues? Please weigh in.

Attached is a photo of the diamond in the setting so you can see the configuration of the prongs (maybe that helps?) It's a 4-prong setting with no V-tip at the top.

Thanks in advance, wise PSers.

It doesn't look like the photo posted, let me try that again:

ETA: yet another attempt to upload this photo!

Hi Tanzigrrl - The dimensions are really close, so it may work. If the sapphire has a 'belly' instead of a diamond cut, that would make a difference. And, your photo did not show up.

I think you are going to need a good setter to look at the prongs to determine how much wiggle room they have, shape wise. Also, I think they will need to see if your current setting is deep enough to accomodate the deeper sapphire- your sapphire is quite a bit deeper than your diamond and it might negate the setting. The dimensions are close enough it's worth asking someone for a professional opinion. I'd also ask about prong strength after removing a stone and then re-setting using the exsisting prongs- they might need to be rebuilt a little to be strong again after all that bending.

Good Luck!

I have no clue why these photos will not post. I've never had this issue before!

Try naming the picture a random string of characters. (sometimes they mess up when someone elses picture has the same name)

also: Instead of "attaching" the photo, try using the "Insert" function. When you are composing a reply, right under the subject line, there is "font size" "font style" "list" "insert" and "alignment"

under "Insert" click the first button, which is a diamond in a square with a small green arrow. You should be able to upload the photo there.

Hopefully I didn't go too detailed there!

Maebelle - followed your directions, I think it worked....

Would like to see both the stone and the setting (plus profile view and more).

Since the setting uses four prongs, it should be an easy job to set the sapphire into the setting. Any belly on the sapphire would just require that the prongs be cut out a bit more deeply around the seat. The greater width of the sapphire will also require that the prongs be bent outward a small amount. but not enough to cause concern. This is an easy and low cost project and has a low risk of damage to any of the stones involved.

Thank you, All, for your answers. I'll take the pieces to my jeweler and see. At worst, I won't be able to reuse my diamond's old setting and I'll have to choose something else. Oh, darn, right? :wink2: :naughty:
