setting for fat-ish fingers?

Hi,

I posted a while back because my BF and I have been talking about engagement rings. We got delayed because we went to try on settings and I couldn't find any I really liked then-- more importantly-- a few life events happened and we just weren't thinking about the engagement as much. Not bad stuff, really, just stuff that bumped the engagement ring off the top of the priority list. :)

Anyway, we have been talking again, I realized that the reason why didn't like the rings I tried on it is because I don't really like my fingers. I'm not a terribly insecure person, but my hands definitely aren't my most prized feature! I actually have autoimmune issues that cause swelling and hypermobility of my finger joints.

So, I looking for a ring that flatters my fingers and is comfortable. I have attached a picture of my hand. My fingers are about a size 7.25, most of which is squishy (i.e., not bone) and my hands are, in general, pretty fleshy. Even when I lose weight, they dont... although they do swell up a bit from time to time. As you can see, my fingers taper. They also get a little bit skinnier right at the base.

I have noticed that too-thin bands cause a muffin-top effect in which the fat gets squeezed out above and below. I have found that too-wide bands and even some stackers tend to take up too much space on my relatively short first knuckle.

I would love any opinions! What general shape of engagement ring and eventual wedding band might look better on me? Three stone? What size stones might give the best porportions? Elongated shapes? Low profile?

Also, what might give me more comfort? Although I honestly am thinking more about looks right now! ;)

I would also really appreciate photos of rings on hands that are sort of like mine.

First of all, I do not think your fingers are fat-ish. But, I guess it's the same thing when you are buying clothes, you pick yourself apart more than any other person would. You might want to check out rings that have some sort of reverse taper thing going on. (Yeah, I know, real technical). I'm no expert, it just seems like it would really flatter your hand. I found two on Google images. I have no idea where they are from, maybe Etsy. (Sorry if you are looking, and they are your pics). These ones are vintage, but maybe they have modern ones as well.

Have you looked at this shape at all?

Your fingers are not fat! I have short fat fingers. I wear a bigger size than you. 9.5

I just took some quick pics. They are with the iPhone so not so great. Hope they help.

Aw thanks, guys! I should say that my fingers aren't fat, exactly, they are just slightly above average in size and very squishy/fleshy! Plus, I am a fairly petite person with porportionately larger and somewhat difficult fingers and feet, probably because of my autoimmune thing. Jewelers always assume I could fit into the 6.5ish samples (WHY ARE THEY ALWAYS SO SMALL???) and were shocked when I couldn't. Once, in high school, I jammed my grandmother's ring onto my finger and we had to get it cut off! Also, my BF has long, thin fingers and his rings are only slightly bigger than mine. Plus, I really just don't like the muffin top look and find that few rings are flattering on me.

@jess I have not tried on that style, but I am intrigued! I hadn't really thought of that.

@YayTacori - your ring is GORGEOUS! I love the Art Deco look. Is that a Tacori? If so, it's one of the most beautiful ones I have seen from that brand. It does have a less exagerrated but overall similar shape as the ones Jess picked out, so that is a good sign.

Yes, it is a Tacori. If you wanna see more pictures, I have a SMTB thread. I also think this kind of setting would be gorgeous on you. I am always self conscience of my hands because everyone in my family has BEAUTIFUL hands. My brother and SIL can be freaking hand models. This ring looked the best on my hand. Because you are right about the muffin top with the skinny bands because it happens with me.

:wavey: Eudora!
I'm a 7.75 on my LH and an 8 on my RH. If you click on my avatar and find my threads, you'll see a lot of me and my 'stuff'! ;)) I'd say go with what you love! If you love it, it will ALWAYS look perfect on your hand, to you, because you love it!! Don't try and conform with what society thinks you "SHOULD" have... what do you wish you could have? What is your ideal "in a perfect world" setting???

Here are a couple of shots of my hands... And there ain't NOTHING tiny about me!!!

Have you considered a colored center stone? then you can get more size for your budget.
http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/vintage-platinum-ring-pid-1055-44.html

also, a three stone or 5 stone would work to provide more coverage for a larger finger. I recently had a thread about this....
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/smaller-diamond-on-a-big-finger.178408/page-2

also, I think a thinker solitaire would look nice, similar to a tiffany Lucida

I agree with the 5-stone suggestion, that would probably look really nice on you.

I've also heard from multiple wearers of the Ritani Endless Love rings that the setting style helps control finger muffin top and lets the finger "breathe" a bit in warmer weather.

I'm in the same boat as you, I wouldn't exactly call my fingers "fat" but they're a little fleshier than I'd like and I wish I had the elegant, slender fingers that so many other women are lucky to have. I wear my rings just a tiny bit bigger than I need to so that they don't look too snug.

Mine is just a 2mm shank and I have pudgy fingers. I think it looks okay.

I think 3 stones provide great coverage on larger fingers! I have long size 6.5 fingers and thin, dainty settings look *awful* on me. I'd also recommend halos or solitaires with substantial bands.

I agree with Liala. I have an 8.5/8 (in the winter) finger and I have a 1ct stone with .34 sapphires, and I'm adding two 1/4 carat rounds on either side (blury picture but you get the idea)... I think unless you're getting an enormous center (like YayTacori's gorgeous ring) on a thick shank, a multi stone is better and provides better finger coverage for those with bigger fingers. Good luck with creating your ring!

If I had a different center, I would absolutely have a three stone, I should have said that earlier.

ENABLER!!!!!
Should I be worried that you all are going to try to convince me to reset my stone too after I've had it for a few years? ;))

My wife's hand is very much close to yours she wears 7

What?? Me?? I'm just a huge fan of diamonds! I happen to have a very supportive DH and I think if you can, you should! Plus, girls with bigger fingers *need* bigger diamonds. And as far as your setting, if you're looking for something bigger/better, start now! Figure out what you like and save for it or whatever needs to happen

Hahaha, I haven't even gotten my first yet! We're getting it set in January. I think he'd kill me if I were planning for an upgrade or reset at this point since he's trying so hard to give me the perfect ring that'll keep my interest forever. I'm hoping that the one we get ends up being my "forever" ring. I've got another hand I can cover in diamonds a few years down the road. :loopy:

Oh, and Eudora, I don't know if this is just my own personal taste speaking or not, but our fingers are the same size and anything bezel set looks fantastic on me. You could head down that route too, if that's your style. Plus, the bezel will add a bit of extra width to your stone, which means it's still simple and clean looking, but it'll give you some more finger coverage.

Your fingers look fine. I wear a 6 1/2 or 7 now but used to wear an 8. Funny thing is I liked smaller stones and thinner bands when my rings were a size 8. My sister wears size 10 rings and she likes thin bands and small stones.

I definitely have short fingers with very little room between my knuckles. My personal preference is to avoid knuckle to knuckle coverage because I think it looks bad on me. A pear or marquis stone may give the appearance of elongating your finger so you may find that appealing. If you get your ring 1/4 to 1/3 size larger than your ring size it will help eliminate the muffin top appearance you mention. What matters is what you like on your finger.

@enerchi - wow, what a gorgeous collection! I am blinded! I especially like your solitaire, which does have a similar look as @YayTacori's ring. Do either of you wear yours with wedding bands?

@bastetcat - I think the pears sides might be a good idea. Follows the general taper trend that I have to check out.

@nielseel - I have, actually, considered a colored stone and i will likely go with one, actually. i just like the look. But I'm not 100% sure yet.

@cygnet - Cute avatar! Is that a Shiba Inu? Interesting about the Endless Love. I'll have to check that out. I'm a little wary of the sizing up, though, because I've been told that that's how people lose rings! Eek! Also, I agree that a bezel might work. I think the sleek, lower profile (paradoxically?) looks better?

@Gypsy - Your ring DEFINITEY looks fine! Love that asscher! I love the match of your wring and your ering! Definitely on-board with the enabling, but love the look you have now, too!

@Laila619 - I love the ring in your post and your avatar. The slight taper of a three stone seems like great option.

@4diamond<3 - Gorgeous! I really like the contrast of the sapphires (?) and the center stone. I think that kind of porportion might look good on me

@Doc_1 - your wife's rings and fingers (and bracelet) are lovely!

@marcy - yeah, it's funny how that works, right? I feel like I thought a larger stone would look best, but I sort of think not? The key is to have a some contrast but also some coverage?

I don't care for three stones with all step cuts of the same cut. It's not a look I appreciate. Personal preferences. :wavey:

Yes, I do. I was gonna upload some pictures but thought it would be easier if I just linked my thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/pinch-me-1-93ct-oec-in-tacori-2531.178678/

My ring finger is 8.75, and both shorter and much more sausage-like than your finger. ;) I have the same dilemma: thin bands cause muffin-top, but I also have limited space for rings because the distance from palm to knuckle is so short. I've been agonizing over what to get, seriously considered a halo, and I finally decided a three-stone is the way to go. I'm going to have my family diamond (5.84mm round) in the center with 2 ~.30 ct. sides (round, but I agree with the above comment that pears would be pretty too). I also think a graduated 5-stone would be very flattering on a larger finger. Just thought I'd pass along what I decided to do! Good luck!

Oh you ARE considering colored stones? Thats great. I was for a long time buy felt to overwhelmed by the choices.

something similar with a more price appropriate sapphire?

so much finger coverage

This one i love because you get the great sparkle of a round but a of finger coverage and pop with the colored stone, and im sure they could do it in sapphires instead

I tried that 3 stone halo Ritani on when I was looking at rings and it is attractive on. Though my fingers aren't large, I do have a similar issue with puffiness. I ended up getting my ring about 1/8 larger than my actual finger size and my stackers (small starter collection :). ) I am getting at 1/4 larger. The 1/8th keeps the muffin look away without feeling dangerously loose when I wear my ering alone.

Rounded bands are going to fit larger at the same size than ones with an edge.

I can't comment on style (although I really like the 3-stone and 5-stone idea), but I will suggest trying on some comfort fit bands to address the "squishiness" factor.

Hi Eudora, I just asked my DH to snap a few pics of my chubby mitts in 2 combinations -- maybe this may help you.
The 3 stone is what I wear as my ering along with the IDJ 1/2 eternity band as a wb. The 1.68 OEC was set by IDJ in November and I wear it solo at present, but I have ordered a new 7 stone band to wear as my wb and the IDJ RB band will move over to snuggle up with my OEC on my RH.

LH (3 stone) is size 7.75 and the RH OEC is size 8.

Hope this is useful!

(YT, I'm also going to post this on your thread regarding combining an OEC w a MRB of smaller sizes....)

I'm a size 7.25 and have found that I really love three stones on my hand. A solitaire has to be so big to look proportionally right to me and by the time it does its almost cocktail ring looking to my eye.

I also love an east/west set oval (or marquise or emerald cut) for finger coverage that doesn't interfere with knuckle space.

I love this three stone from JBEG:
