I thought I had this one done and dusted until pregcurious posted a couple of pics in her red spinel side stone thread, and made me re-think about how the stone should be set. :naughty:

Here is the stone itself, a concave faceted square with corners Amethyst by Richard Homer. Amethyst is my birthstone, and I used the money given to me by my friends and family for my 50th recently towards the purchase of this stone.

I would like a ring that I can wear as often as I can, and the main stone to be bezel-set as that is my preference.

Here are the ring settings I had in mind, something simple that I can wear to work:

These are the pics that pregcurious posted recently that got me thinking, and I particularly like the EC emerald 5-stone ring:

Your thoughts and ideas will be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Do want modern? Antique? Your original ideas were modern, and I think that is more appropriate with a concave cut stone.

The latter 2 rings from the red spinel thread are both Art Deco. Art Deco itself is very geometric, and I think that's what your designs all have in common. My guess is that you like the side stones that give a tapering effect in the multistone rings, and the smaller amount of metal that puts the stones center stage.

To marry the two ideas, you could do a modern bezel ring (like your first ring), but add bezeled tapered trapezoids that are also concave cut. You could do brilliant cut traps, but I am not sure that will look good with concave cut. I would also decrease the width of your shank so that the stones can shine.

That said, I actually like the first solitaire you posted. The only change I would make would be to have the shank come down faster, and level out.

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

Or this art deco ring, but with a bezel.

I also really like the first ring you posted!!

Just wanted to say that I love the stone you chose - the color and cut are gorgeous!

gorgeous amethyst which would absolutely rock the world in the setting Acinom posted

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

Thanks everyone for your input so far, keep them coming please!

I like antique style rings, however, I am not keen on millgrains.

I am concerned about step cut side stones may not go well with a concave cut CS centre, brilliant cut ones may work better.

I agree, brilliant would be better than step cut. Step cuts have their own obvious facet pattern.

I really like the ring that Acinom posted. You could do that with brilliant cuts.

The first one with 3 stones, or second one with 5 stones?

I like the look of the 5 stones with brilliant cuts, however, not with prongs, of course!

Sorry, this one.

Hmmm, not too keen on that one, probably because I cannot visualise it with the amethyst in it instead of the sugar loaf sapphire.

I can set this stone in a similar design as the one intended for the aquamarine (and find another setting for the aqua), this is the current winner as I really like this design for stones with straight sides:

Here is a less bling version without diamonds in the steps:

A less bling version of the bombe ring that I like, substituting the trillions with a couple of round diamonds or pink sapphires:

How exciting DK! Has your amethyst arrived yet? If so, please post more pics. I love the idea of a modern bezel ring with brilliant sides!

Because of my chunky fat fingers, delicate rings do not suit me, and this pic came with the Google search results for "Men's gemstone rings".

This would look great with your stone. It has a clean modern look with just the right dose of 'something going on' :appl:

Not yet, ricezo, it should be with me at the end of April, can't wait!

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

E-mail sent to obtain quotes for the two rings with steps on the side: one with diamonds with 3 steps each; and one without with 2 steps each, most likely to be in 14K WG afterall, this way I can have this and the Aquamarine set before the year is out, and more rings for me to interchange!

Thank you all for your ideas and inspirations!

DK

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

Update on ring setting.

I need to re-think about having parallel vertical steps on the sides, as it will look too similar to the Aquamarine ring that has already been made.

It's now down to one of these two: horizontal asymmetrical bars or two leaves and a berry (or 3 leaves, I do not know if there is a proper name for this design).

Horizontal bars (leaning towards 3 bars with the middle one sticking out to provide more finger coverage):

Decision, decision ...

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

As much as I love the leaf and berry motive, I think that geometrical shapes would work best given the modern cut of your amethyst. I can see it with a combination of traps, baguettes and/or bullets!

Have you seen in person the horizontal bar design before? The reason I ask is that the design is really cool and original, but I don't think it would be flattering on my hand (but it might look amazing on yours!).

Looking forward to seeing your project unfold!

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

ricezo,

I am leaning towards the asymmetrical bars too, as I believe the leaves and berry design looks better with an oval.

Here is another version with baguettes and a cushion cut centre stone:

__12__17_.jpg

I believe I should go for paved round diamonds instead of baguettes due to the concave faceting on the Amethyst.

DK :))

P.S. I have not seen the asymmetric bars design in real life, however, I believe it will suit my big fat middle finger.

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

I do not see the concave cut in combination with a flowery design. Somehow I envision it with either modern or an art deco inspired design with geometric lines.

Me too, and the asymmetrical bars design is winning.

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

I really like the asymmetrical bars and I think they will look fabulous with your stone. It will make a really unusual ring. I suspect it will be quite showstopping. All these middle finger rings lately are making me rethink my policy of only wearing stones on my ring fingers. I can't wait to see your ring completed!

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

I have always worn a ring on my left hand ring finger since I was given a sapphire and diamond half eternity ring by my mum when I was about 11yo, and have continued to wear one on that finger regardless of my marital status.

Some rings look better on that finger, whereas some would look better on the middle finger, depending on style, setting and size.

The newest ring that I shall receive later this month is the first ring I have made specifically for the left hand middle finger, an Aquamarine, and the stone and CAD for the ring can be seen in this thread: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-cs-year-2015.209825/

I have a Tahitian pearl ring that was re-sized at the time of purchase to fit the left middle finger. However, it no longer fits, and I have been wearing it occasionally with one of those temporary plastic ring guards on my ring finger.

The Amethyst will be the second ring made especially for the left middle finger, no doubt there will be more to come, like a 3-stone set vertically.

For my right hand, I had my EC made as a RHR for the middle finger, and another RHR ring made with a smaller EC that is more appropriate for work-wear, again for the middle finger. I only wore the larger EC on my RH ring finger when the original setting no longer fit the middle finger, and it did not feel right to me. The issue has now been resolved after I re-set the larger EC in its forever home so that it can be worn on the middle RH finger again, and it feels right and great whenever I wear it.

So give it a go and wear rings on your middle fingers. Perhaps start with trying on the costume jewellery first to see how they feel before spending the money on the real thing.

Another vote for this very geometric and contemporary design.

Re: Setting inspirations required (Square Amethyst with Corn

I like the look of the ring ricezo has posted, thank you!

For those who liked this ring, step cut sides, or keep the shape and use paved round diamonds instead with the concave faceted centre stone?

Thanks for your advice and opinion in advance.
