setting not symmetrical, one prong off

Hi, everyone, I have just received my e-ring from James Allen and the diamond looks beautiful, thanks to this forum from which I learned a lot over the past few monthes.

However, I noticed one of the prongs is off the center. It is not super obvious, but it's a little hard for me to ignore once I noticed it. The setting is platinum 6 prong knife edge (hand made). I contacted the customer service and they were very responsive and said it would be fixed no problem. I don't know if this level of asymmetry is normal for handmade settings? I looked at the gallery of this setting on the website and it seems some them are not symmetrical too. So I don't know if it would be any better if they change to another head or fix it.

I took the pictures from both front and back. You can see that prong number 4 is not in the middle of 3 and 5. Can some of the experts here take a look and see if it is normal for handmade pieces? Am I being too picky? front1.pngback1.png

There is only two explanations for that. #1 the casting of the ring originally was offset or #2 the Jeweler did a sloppy job setting the diamond. This should be an easy fix as long as the head is sothered on properly. Best of luck.

Yeah, that's off and would bug me. I'd send it back and ask them to fix it. I'd also send these pictures.

To me it looks like the spacing between prongs 1/6 is significantly larger than the spacing between 1/2, and spacing btwn 3/4 > 4/5. In the pic from the underside it's clear the top and bottom prongs are leaning asymmetrically - I couldn't say if it's a manufacturing issue or whether the prongs were bent like that during setting somehow, but I can say that I'd want it fixed.

Ditto 04 - you've taken good pics of the issue, I'd send these to your rep.

Thank you all. I sent the pictures to James Allen customer service. Hopefully it will come back perfect.
It's interesting that we look at diamonds with such precision using magnifiers, and yet there is no standard for settings and we
just look at it with our naked eyes, while setting is such a big part of a piece of jewelry.

That's a bit harsh. It's your ring, and if you want it to look "perfect" which it is YOURS so it should be up to your standards it may require extra work. While I agree it should be perfect, JA and all our other vendors strive to keep their customers happy and will do whatever it takes to make your order perfect. I would imagine it's a bit harder with jewelry because customers are a bit harder to please (due to everyone's pickyness). That's not to say that you shouldn't get perfection, but it's no reason to say that there's no standard.

I'm sorry if my words came across wrong. I did not mean the vendors do not have standards and i did not mean the vendor disappointed me because i would be perfectly happy as long as its fixed. The experience that i have had with james allen is exceptional.
What I mean is its generally hard to determine if its symmetrical or not. We customers just have to see it with our naked eyes. Not like diamonds there are so many tools and grading systems easy for everyone to see and compare.

At the risk of offending you once again 04diamond<3, I have to agree with the OP. I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect that something as simple as the prongs being straight and evenly spaced isn't a lot to expect from any vendor. I would certainly complain to Chevy if my tires weren't aligned properly. Does that mean that I'm attacking their standards or being harsh? While I agree with you that often times a poster can become obsessive about tiny nuances of their stone or setting, I don't agree that this is the case here. I've purchased two diamonds from JA and they are my preferred vendor, so I agree that they have wonderful customer service and strive to make us happy, but in this case their quality control dropped the ball. It has happened to every PS vendor at one time or another and saying so isn't an attack on any of them.

Thank you Christina! :) Just a misunderstanding.
