Setting question: 1.5, 1.8, or 2.0mm platinum shank?

I am wondering what is the best shank size. The shank will have a single row of pave and will be hand forged platinum. The size of the center stone is a 3.02ct oval sapphire and will have a halo around it. I was talking to Leon and he was going to do a 1.5mm shank, but I think this might be too thin and cause problems later on.

Is 1.8mm a good thickness in that it will be durable enough and still look delicate and proportionate to the size of the center stone? Or should I go with 2mm?

Someone also mentioned that too thin of a shank may cause the center stone to look crooked because it doesn't hold straight up.

Thoughts? Experiences with 1.8mm vs. 2mm?

By the way, I'm guessing we are referring to width, but now I'm not sure if this is referring to thickness.

Thanks!

I'd go with 2mm probably since that is still really thin and hardly any wider than 1.8. Leon has had some durability issues with ultra thin rings, so I think it is best to be safe.

if its going to have diamonds in the band I wouldnt want it thinner than 2.0 mm. And I dont think that would look to wide especially considering the ct size of your stone. Particularly when you consider the length an oval gives you.

Hi Sebas! Can't wait to see your ring and your sapphire!

I agree with everyone else that 2.0mm is probably your best bet. My ring's band is going to be plain and I still kept it at 1.8mm, to be safe. With diamonds, I would definitely go a touch thicker to be on the safe side and 2.0 is really still very thin. I was worried before too, but when I looked on a ruler, it helped me envision how thin it actually was.

Thanks for the feedback! :-)

Just out of curiosity, have the durability issues seen in some of Leon's rings been with 1.8mm shank size or just the ultra thin 1.5mm? I get the impression that the 2mm may be more applicable for cast setting, but that the advantage of hand forged platinum is that you can go slightly thinner and not compromise durability. I'm not sure though.

at least 2 mm

I do not know anything about LM's durability, but from what I've read on PS, if you are planning on diamond melee in the shank, then I'd stay with 2mm for the diameter. It will be well balanced with the size of the centre diamond - which sounds AWESOME, btw!

My Leon is 1.8mm with three-sided pave and I've had no durability issues whatsoever. But my center stone is 1.73ct though, so the proportion would be totally different to your ring. My larger stone (4.65ct cushion) is on a 2.4ish mm band. I prefer the larger band, and feel more secure wearing it. With those two points of comparison, I'd have to recommend the 2mm band for your ring. The extra durability and heft of platinum are just what you need. :))

Justginger> that's I very useful info. Good to think at the proportions!

justginger > thanks! it will end up being 1.9mm single pave. I hope the proportions end up ok. I couldn't change it once I asked, but I trust Leon. Did you get your ring insured? Do you recommend anyone?

1.8mm if it's a plain shank, 2mm if it's a pave shank. 1.5mm is too thin.

For a stone of that size probably 2mm maybe even 2.2

Thanks everyone. The final shank width was 1.9mm, platinum, hand forged, with single row of pave. See video taken with iPhone camera: http://youtu.be/hoqvHTJZeQ4
