Settings for Princess Cuts: V-Prongs or Standard?

My fiance and I have been looking at princess cut diamonds for the past few weekends, and we finally decided to upgrade to a beautiful GIA-graded 2.2 carat diamond. We decided on a classic platinum setting with a thin band (about 2 mm), but we have not decided for sure whether we want v-prongs or standard prongs.

Our current diamond (1.5 carat princess cut) was placed in a v-prong setting. I like the look, but I did not like that the prongs never seemed to be totally symmetrical. When I first got it, one of the prongs seemed to look a little bit "off", so we had it fixed. The prongs all looked basically the same after that, but one was still slightly "off" to me. I was told that princess cut diamonds aren't cut exactly the same on every corner, so it's expected that the prongs will never be exactly the same. I could live with that, and after I looked at friends' diamonds princess cut diamond settings closely, I often noticed the same thing with theirs. Mine still bothered me a bit sometimes, and I would usually only wear it turned one way on my hand, because it somehow looked more even to my eye that way. I posted it here on Pricescope, and everyone thought that it looked fine, but I guess my OCD was just getting the best of me.

We went to look at our new setting today, since we got a call telling us that it was ready. To our surprise, it was set with standard prongs. I'm not sure which look I prefer, but I do like that the prongs all look really even. We checked, and they seem to be set well, with the little ball securely over each corner. My fiance also really prefers this look. Someone else offered their opinion, and they thought that the v-prongs might look like too much metal on such a large diamond (since they would have to be larger to hold it properly), and that it might overwhelm my petite hand (size 4.5 ring finger).

We didn't take the ring home with us tonight, since we will not have the full payment available for a few days - so there is still time to change our minds. I have been looking online, and lots of designers seem to often use prongs other than the v-prongs (Tacori, Sylvie, Leon Mege, Vatche, etc.) quite often.

Does anyone have any thoughts? I have heard mixed opinions on this: some say that the v-prongs are better for princesses, and others say that the corners are protected with both types of prongs (like I said, when we looked, each corner seemed well-protected by the little balls on the end of each prong). Also, if it were bad, why would all of these designers offer princess settings without v-prongs?

Oh, and the girdle of our diamond is thin to thick, if that matters. It also has an extra facet (according to the GIA report), but I have no idea where it is.

Thanks in advance!

My 3ct princess center stone is set with "ball" prongs and it appears perfectly secure. I think it's all a matter of preference. I think some prefer the V tips if the diamond as an ultra thin girdle or somerhing.
