I have recently purchased but haven't yet received a pentagon and an octagon shaped stone. I have no idea how I'm going to set them, but that doesn't matter because they're so pretty. But I wondered, has anyone else bought unusally shaped stones and if so how have you had them set? For example Uli's stones. Photos please!

I think a pentagon will require a custom setting but you should be able to find standard settings for an octagon shaped stone. Look for settings meant for square cut cornered stones, meaning asscher or square emerald cut.

This is a good question & I'd love to see pics too of unusual cuts & how they were set. Ulli, yes, and Jeff Hunt -- he does some of the most fascinating cuts; I could stare at his stones forever & not be bored. In various places I've been so tempted by gorgeous stones but didn't buy them because I couldn't think how I'd set them. I mean design -- obviously you can have a mounting made to hold anything, but the bigger point is how you design it -- side stones, whatever. Anybody want to show examples?

Nice -- but still symmetrical (I love Kismet's pendant, smashing!). Pentagons aren't easy -- and I'd like to see how people have set more irregular shapes, such as:

Beautiful cuts, all. I LOVE the zircons. Coming up with anything but a single stone setting isn't easy. Need better design heads than I have!

P.S. None of these are mine.

For me, the trick is to replicate the shape of the gem. Here's a few of mine.

This one is unsuccessful because of the side baguettes. I like the head and the way it holds the stone but NOT the sides. I will re-set this at some point. (It's a colour change sapphire btw)!

Those are VERY nice, LD. You just about answered what I wanted to see all at once! You give me more courage to pull the trigger on something unusual. I absolutely adore the tanz pendant -- perfect way to set off the stone & its great cut. What do you want to do differently with the sapphire?

I've been thinking about this a lot, because my new benitoite is a funky shape, sort of an isosceles trillion. Almost like a squat little pear of cleftless heart, and I have no clue how to set it!

It's this little guy:
