Settings that don't spin...or spin less...???

I'm still strongly considering doing a reset on my 2.538 RB ACA and am looking for feedback on comfortable settings, specifically, ones that do less spinning on the finger.

I notice that the current fashion is very thin shanks, and while I think they are lovely and really make the stone pop, I think that the spinning issue is more likely in this type of setting, and it's driving me nutso!

Does a 3-stone setting spin less, because the sides hold more steady against the neighboring fingers? Does a cathedral type setting hold more steady up top of the finger? I know that my wider band ring (that was lost) did not spin, and while I could special order that from the maker, I am wanting to stay more contemporary than that.

Any suggestions? (FWIW, sizing beads and euro shank on this ring wouldn't work for me, I would never be able to get used to that!)

Thanks for any comments!

Spinning occurs when a ring is too top heavy for the setting. The best ways to prevent this are:
  • wider bands
ring sized snug on the finer
euro shank so the ring isn't perfectly round

It's just a matter of physics.

Sizing beads! Are you SURE you wouldn't be able to get used to them? You might be surprised. I thought I would hate them, but after a couple of days getting used to it, I can't feel mine at all, and they solved the spinning problem better than regular resizing for me (although my stone is much smaller than yours!). As a bonus, when my fingers swell a little, there's extra space for them to expand into without getting sausage finger.

You could look into a euro shank though I've found they don't always keep the ring from spinning on your finger.

Hi baroque,

Love your diamond ring!

Have you tried the little plastic $5 ring snuggies? Give them a try. No guarantees you will like them, but, I do.

David Atlas recommended something along those lines and it really works for me. My fingers change sizes throughout the day, and I despise the feeling of a tight ring, so really wanted to avoid sizing down. I have these snuggies in a couple of lengths, so can get 'just right' fitting at all times. I like that my ring feels comfortable and secure at all times, but it can be aggravating if I start playing with the pad underneath if I fidget or something. So I know these wouldn't work for everyone, but they are like $5 on amazon, so, why not. I actually 'make my own' out of some tubing I have.

Sorry if you have tried these already, just trying to be helpful :wavey:

I hate sizing beads personally - I find them uncomfortable because I have small fingers but big knuckles. I find lower settings and wider shanks are the only way for me. A three stone only wont spin for me if it is low enough, I have had two three stones, one totally spun bc it was too high and other one didn't. A euro shank is great idea too!

For me personally, wider bands prevent spinning. My setting is 3mm wide with 2.32ct solitaire and doesn't spin at all. I have tried on 3 setting styles and they do spin if the band is narrower than 3mm. As much as the very thin band styles are in fashion now, I wouldn't be able to deal with spinning.

My old ering was super thick and never spun. 3mm wide at least. It was a five stone. The side stones were 30 pointers so you can imagine how thick the shank was.

The ring style is not the main issue. It has to do if your knuckles are larger than the part of the finger that you wear your ring. If the ring has to be sized larger to fit over the knuckles and then is loose when on the finger, it may spin because it is too big. My knuckles are not larger, really, so my rings never spin. Good fit is what prevents it. If you don't like sizing beads, I'd use the snuggies. I would not choose an out-of-style wide setting just to keep it from spinning.

I agree that proper fit is the most important factor. I have a 2.54 carat diamond from Brian Gavin in a 2 mm solitaire setting and it does not spin. In the winter when my rings are loose I wear it with a plain 2 mm band and a 3 mm channel set band and in the summer when my rings feel tighter due to the heat I wear it with only one band. I would have a local jeweler make sure the size is correct and you might also try wearing it with a wider wedding band or stacking it with multiple bands to see if that helps.

Thank you all for the suggestions and feedback. I think I will start by having my ring sized down a bit. But...I do think a reset is in my future. I just wish I could go into a store and see the perfect setting staring up at me! Looking at all the options on PS make it tough to decide what one want, I know you understand that!

It's very annoying, isn't it? I fiddle with my ring constantly, I think sometimes it looks as though I'm trying to get others to notice it, when I am truly trying to just get it to stay upright.

I didn't have this issue with a wider band, however, my last diamond was 1.5 carats and this one is just over 2.5, so the weight is certainly part of it.

Your ring is gorgeous baby monster!

Thank you! This is a great suggestion! I am going to check those out. My hands are in front of people all day (I'm and escrow officer and the person you sign your documents with when you buy a house), and so I might not like it if they can be seen. It's certainly worth a try though!

I've had three different settings. A thin band with pave on the band, a halo with a thin band and a three stone with a thin band. Both the solitaire and halo spun.. a lot. The 3 stone doesn't spin at all. It might move a little from side to side but I have never had the stone be on the palm side of my finger..... didn't even realise it till I saw your post. So in my experience, the 3 stone works best for less spinning.

Size is for sure a factor.. But height of setting also plays a role. I had a halo that would spin all the time. I reset in the Victor Canera Evelyn with flush stems. It's sits lower than the halo. The exact same ring size. It never spins.

Thanks so much for your message! Might have helped me make a decision to go with a DK 3 stone! I had emailed him about a week ago and he responded this morning. Fate?

I'll be checking in to see this beauty. Keep us posted!

And for those that recommended the ring snuggies/huggies is there a particular brand/style you recommend??

Seriously. I do not feel them AT ALL.

I hate sizing beads because I feel them every time I use my hand.
