Hello all, I've been looking online a lot for our upcoming engagement ring purchase.. and decided it's just too hard to decide what we really like without seeing in person. Originally we thought we'd want a plain band and a round solitaire! After going in to a Shane Co. to view diamonds and compare colors/clarities/sizes we discovered that we'd like a setting similar to below much better. It's priced at about $1275 if I remember correctly, .57 ct., 14k yg. They showed us a couple diamonds as well, and the "best" of the bunch that he was trying to sell to us was a GIA cert., .7 ct., round, H, SI2, "Shane Classic". It was pretty in person and we might have been sold on it, but I came home and checked the HCA calculator and it rated a 4.-something.

So my questions are 1. are the diamonds that I can find on the various places mentioned on PS that rate better on the HCA tool w/ similar or better specs REALLY better than the one I saw at Shane Co.? It's hard for me to tell by looking at pictures online!

2. If the answer to the question above is yes, should I order I diamond online and have Shane Co. set it for me in this setting? I have not been able to find a setting like this one for anything less than $1800 or so online...

hopefully people will chime in. You can definitely get a better diamond from a trusted pricescope vendor. Yes, what's your budget. Will Shane set your own stone? Or, buy it and have it set elsewhere. I actually think that's a pretty setting. Best of luck!

1. Likely yes, if you go with a reputable vendor and understand what you are getting.

2. The setting looks like one that many vendors offer. It's a 6-prong head with a pave shank. Can you find out what type of pave it is exactly? Here are a few options that are UNDER your $1,800 budget for the setting, and likely nicer (you could ask about a 6-prong head vs. a 4-prong head for some of these, it might not incur a 'custom' charge depending on the vendor):

No - maximize your budget by going with a great stone from a PS approved vendor that provides idealscopes. That setting is very easy to procure from any of the vendors! Both Gabriel & Co and Bev K have them, as RubyBeth posted.

Yes, you can get a higher quality diamond from one of the vendors known here. And I would think many would have a setting similar to that. But if not, I'd buy the setting from Shane and send it to the diamond vendor to set the stone. (And you need to buy the diamond first so the head on the setting will be the exact right size for your stone.)
 
Not saying to do this, just offering up the information, but Shane Co. also sells GIA certified diamonds. If you look on their website through their diamond inventory, you can look at the stones they have available with GIA certs. It's a bit of a pain since you have to click on the "certificate" link next to each diamond to find out if it is GIA or EGL, but there are many GIA. Also the "Shane Classics" or whatever they are called are mostly GIA's. I know this because I got my set from Shane Co. and so now that I'm somewhat looking at potential upgrades/trade-ins, I looked online b/c it's important to me to have a GIA cert. Shane Co. does have a good upgrade policy... full purchase price toward a new diamond, you just have to spend at least $1.00 more. Many places make you spend double the price you paid, so that's a nice perk.
 
Thank you all for the responses. My total budget is about $5000, so that particular Shane Co. setting will leave me with a budget of about $3200 for a diamond.

The setting at Shane Co. is actually two different pieces, the one that holds the center stone and then the band next to it as well. So I think it's a steal for that price, considering all the others I've seen online are about that price or more for just the one band for the center diamond. And Shane Co. guarantees the quality, so if one of the small diamonds falls out they'll replace it, as long as I bring the ring to them every 6 months for maintenance! I'm not sure if the guarantee would be altered

I have been talking to Yukatiel at ID Jewelry, he's been very nice and showed me a great diamond for the plain setting that I told him I was interested in before. After visiting Shane Co. I changed my mind about the plain band setting and decided I want this one instead, but he's a bit busy so we haven't talked about this setting yet. I have about a month before I buy so I hope he and I can get some things going soon.

I believe I will either 1. Order the diamond online myself and ask Shane Co. to set it (which I believe they do) or 2. Have Yukatiel or another reputable jeweler help me find a diamond and I'll find a way to get the Shane Co. setting to them and they can set it for me.

Thanks for the input! I'll probably post a request for opinions on certain diamonds in the near future- or if anyone would like to direct me to a diamond or two that you recognize as pretty spectacular I would appreciate that as well! Our wanted diamond specs are: GIA cert, Round Brilliant, G-I possibly J color, VS2+ clarity, excellent cut, .70-.90 carats. :)
