Hi All,

A friend of the family is now starting to look for an e-ring & he is interested in a shared prong style. What he isnt sure of is if he should buy a flat shank or a scalloped shank.

Will one be better than the other in terms of rubbing girdles against the band?
Will the scalloped edge wear faster & flatten out in time?

What so people on the site generally like more, flat or scalloped?

1st pic is of WhiteFlash Aramis...flat sides

If there''s a link I missed regarding this, can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Judy

I'm not sure that the Aramis setting is actually considered "shared prong"? Perhaps someone else can chime in on that.

Has your friend ever seen the "air eternity" style of shared prong style? I will attach a photo of one. I think this ring was a custom job, but it's not my ring, so I don't really have any more specifics. But probably anyone could make one similar. I think it's a lovely style, and just a "little bit different" than the usual shared prong style we always think of. Which, BTW, is a style I used to have... and honestly, the one thing I did get kinda tired of was the somewhat "orthodontic braces" look of the side view; but I had the "standard" style, like in the second photo you posted, not the "air" eternity look of this photo.

ETA: Also, with the "scalloped" sides, you do have to be careful that the girdles of the diamonds of the two rings don't rub against/abrade one another. It can be common with that shared prong style... although not inevitable. That style of rings CAN be made to NOT do that, and my WF shared-prong set was a good example of that.

The Aramis sure does look to be shared prong from the picture.

I don''t think one would have a greater susceptibility to wear over time than the other; I think this is really just a matter of aesthetic preference. Which look does your eye prefer?

Thanks Lynn for that pic. I do like it, but my friend has no room for custom at all. If one of the mass production companies make it, there might be a chance. I laughed when you said "dental brace" look. Sure looks like it doesn it, but nicer to say "scalloped". LOL

Never knew the Aramis had a spicific style name. I''m curious to find out if anyone knows. :-)

generally, I''m not a fan of the scalloped side, I''d prefer a flat or basket setting like lynn posted.

Thanks for weighing in on this guys. I myself prefer flat sides. I remember when I was looking for my ring, & my husband just kept calling these kind of rings "dental rings". LOL I kept telling him thats not the proper description. He said it was cause they look like braces. LOL NO OFFENSE to those that have one please. I still think they are lovely rings, although not my preference. I was just worried that the scalloped one would wear down faster but if you all think not, then are pretty equal.

The 3/4 from WF is an amazing value for the look & all you get. There is an Adwar ring that has flat sides, but for sure not as good a quality. So...flat Adwar or scalloped WF. LOL Tracy from WF is going to check on a Unique Settings of NY #ENSN 357A (wont let me save a pic) but it looks to be the same one Dimend Scassi has on their site. Tracy said the tips will be finer than on the pics. In my next post I''ll put a side shot. Plus the one from Unique Settings of New York has a 4 prong on it.

3/4 WF ring will probably be the same $$ for basically min. .65 pts versus .30 points with the Dimend Scassi looking one.

Any thoughts? Probably just get the one you like & not worry about cost too much if both within budget. ;-)
