After a long trip from USA --> Paris --> La reunion island
finally it's here !

More blue in the day light and more purple, with kind of red flashes under artificial light.
It looks nice so i want to share it with you.

Sorry for the pics, i'm not a good photographer, if interested i can made handshot under daylight tomorrow !

Gorgeous!

How are you going to set this beautiful stone? I visited Reunion Island on my honeymoonin 1988. What a beautiful place.

Oh really ? you came in la Réunion ! yes it's a beautiful place ;-)

i think i'll set it like the diamond of my wife, something simple as i dont have really good jeweller here...
i saw two of them today and they told me that white gold is too "hard" for this setting for Tanzanite. They prefer to do it with Yellow gold but "Rhodié" as they called it. yellow gold which looks like white gold...if someone could tell me if it seems to be a good thing please let me know !

Uh, if they aren't comfortable setting a tanz in white gold I wouldn't let them set it at all! Yes, white can be more brittle than yellow due to the nickle content, but I'd want a jeweler who was a little more comfortable with the stone in general. And sounds like they want to set it in yellow and then rhodium plate it white; I wouldn't do this because rhodium plating isn't permanent and the yellow will show up big time as it wears. I would think you'd have to get it re-plated more often because the wear will be so much more noticeable with a yellow band.

And I ADORE the cut on your stone- it's gorgeous!

Thanx for the advice, it's hard to find good jeweller where i live...i'll see other one and i'll see if they tell me same thing about the "hardness" of white gold...

No problem! Of course for strong malleable white metal there is always platinum :naughty: , but unless there is a feather or something that would make it an especially hard stone to set, a good benchman should be able to set a tanzanite in white gold.

I've seen plenty of tanzanite set in both white and yellow gold so it should be fine. As mentioned earlier, if the jeweller doesn't feel confident, I'd look for someone else. Rhodium plating is usually done on white gold to make it whiter. To do so on yellow good will not last long and it will be hassle to continually re-dip it.

Ok thanx chrono, i was surprise becquée i've seen a lot of tanzanite with White gold too.

Other thing, i realise How it is difficult to take good pic of stones...the tanz look very dark, don't look the same in real !

The easiest is to use natural lighting. Make sure it is a bright day, if not you might need additional lighting. In your hand shot, the colouration is off because your skin should not look jaundiced. Be careful if doing this outside (stone might drop or get blown away). With winter here, standing by the window or glass doors while inside works well enough.

Beauty! The cut is terrific. I would hate to see that stone damaged if set by a jeweler without experience with colored stones other than corundum. If you can't find one there in whom you have confidence, you might consider some of the jewelers on the sticky at the top of this forum -- have one of them make the setting & send the stone to be set by him or her.

You have a lucky wife!! Will you marry me too?

lol jewelfreak, i don't think that my wife will be agree...:-)

here is a pic taken this morning in daylight, looks much more like in real.
Yes the cut is very great thanx to gene ;-)

Wow, that stone is REALLY beautiful. The cut is superb. I have a tanzi but it is more of a bronze color (unheated). I am not typically attracted to blue/purple tanzi (odd I know), but yours is stunning!

Beautiful stone!!! It's like staring into the time warp of space. I hope you are able to find a decent jeweler to set it...

@vickygigi: in fact it's an unheated Tanzanite, natural blue (well as gene said, but i think he's highly reliable)
thanx again to this forum, it helps me a lot !

Very beautiful. I really hope you can find someone capable of setting it without damage.

What a beautiful tanzanite! I would find a different jeweler to do the setting however. I would not feel comfortable with anyone that couldn't set it in white gold. My one and only tanzanite is in a pendant setting and it is white gold and there were no issues when I had it set.

Wow, I love the last pic of your stone! Really beautiful if that is representative! Is that a Richard Horner stone?

Minou,
It's by Gene of Precision Gems.

I guess I should've remembered that, huh?!

My short term memory isn't as good as it used to be either but the OP mentioned Gene by name in this thread earlier so I had help.

yes minous the last pic is the most representative !
And yes it's cut by gene of precisiongem

It's stunning and of course Gene's cutting is remarkable. It really does look like a sky from Star Wars doesn't it?

In terms of white/yellow gold? Any good jeweller would be comfortable working with both and I've never heard anybody being swayed off white gold before! On that basis, please don't let him/her anywhere near your lovely new stone.

The main risk with Tanzanite (and any stone really) if you're going for a standard prong set is when the jeweller bends the prongs over the stone to hold it in, a certain amount of pressure and heat has to be applied and if there are corners to a gem (pointy bits) they are most vulnerable. Tanzanite doesn't like having pressure/heat put on it BUT in the hands of a skilled jeweller it shouldn't present too much of a problem.

Is there somewhere else you can go to discuss your stone and how to set it? If not, do you go on vacation anywhere that maybe forum members may know and be able to recommend a good bench, Europe the US etc?

thanks LD for your answer.
in fact, if i was careful i'd wait until i go to Paris for holidays but it's in october !
can't wait to have my stone set...i'll try to find other jewellers i know that There is one who used to set tanzanite i'll see him on friday.

Finally, the setting is done and i want to share it with you

Something simple and btw it looks great even on me (a man) so i'm happy :-)
